ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. (WFOX/WJAX) – A Florida man is in jail and now charged with DUI after a golf cart crash on Sunday left his wife dead.

It’s a St. Johns County neighborhood where, at times, golf carts seem to outnumber cars.

Christopher Barnes is from the area and said he remembers seeing Christina and Angelo Theodosiou minutes after the fatal crash.

“We woke up to the lights out here, came outside,” Barnes remembered. “Matter of fact, she was already loaded into the ambulance. Her husband was out here and the police were talking to him. He was pacing around. The golf cart was already by the mailbox.”

Curry Pajcic is an attorney, but is not connected to the case. He said this kind of accident is more common than many people think.

“People need to know golf carts are not toys. They’re dangerous and they can kill people,” Pajcic said.

Residents in the neighborhood said teenagers and adult golf cart drivers regularly drive through the area with no speed bumps or stop signs to control traffic.

“These happen on a weekly, if not, a daily basis, so we’re talking hundreds a year across the state, and they’re increasing,” Pajcic added.

Neighbors said there have been close calls.

“We kind of imagine it was only a matter of time before someone was in an accident at this intersection,” Barnes said.

Angelo Theodosiou is now behind bars. He was charged with DUI, according to St. Johns County court records, and refused to take a breath test.

“You shouldn’t be drinking and driving. It’s still a vehicle and is still dangerous,” Yariela Farkas, who also lives in the neighborhood, said.

An incident report from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office states Christina Theodosiou hit her head on the ground when she fell out of the golf cart.

It’s a tragic reminder of the deadly dangers from open-air vehicles when mixed with risky behavior.

“Don’t drink and drive, wear a seatbelt, have your headlights on, use blinkers, stay in your lane,” Pajcic said.
