Robert Moran claimed the first win of his professional career with a one shot win on the Winter Tour Marbella in the second event of swing one at Mijas Golf.
Moran fired rounds of 71, 67 and 67 for a ten-under total which was enough to hold off the challenges of Sweden’s Fabian Wennerlof and Leon Fricker of England.
After an opening 71 at the Los Lagos course (par 72), the Dubliner put himself firmly in contention with a second round of 67 at Los Olivos Course (par 71) courtesy of three birdies in a row to finish.
Back at the Los Lagos Course for the final round, Moran made an electric start with two birdies in his first three holes before he eagled the par-5 5th.
Back to back bogeys followed but he steadied affairs with a run of pars before he went on another clubhouse charge. Moran birdied the 14th, 15th and 17th for another superb finish and it was enough for him to reach the top of the leaderboard and he wouldn’t be caught.
The Castle golfer finished 24th on the Alps Tour order of merit meaning he will bid for a third time lucky promotion to the HotelPlanner Tour next year.
In 14 events, the 26-year-old registered four top-10s. However, while this is his first victory he already clinched silverware earlier this year when he chipped in for birdie on the 18th at Killeen Castle’s Irish Challenge. It gave him a fourth place finish, the Christy O’Connor trophy and a place in the Amgen Irish Open as the leading Irish finisher that week.
He acquitted himself well at the K Club in September despite missing the cut.
John Murphy carded a final round of 73 to take seventh place on two-under-par and round off the Irish involvement.
