Returning two of his top four golfers from a year ago, Old Rochester coach Chris Cabe had modest expectations for the 2025 season.
“I knew we had some talent coming into the season,” he said, noting that the Bulldogs graduated 2024 Standard-Times Golfer of the Year Peter le Gassick. “I didn’t know how they were going to step up and answer the call.”
After going 15-0 during the regular season, the Bulldogs made a clean sweep of the big meets, winning the South Coast Conference, South Sectional and Div. 3 state championships.
ORR knocked off defending Div. 3 champion Ayer Shirley Regional by eight strokes on Oct. 27 at Blissful Meadows Golf Course in Uxbridge to capture its second state title in the past four years after winning the Div. 2 crown in 2022.
“They were ecstatic,” Cabe said. “We knew we had a good shot going in.
“We were able to pull it out on a tough day. It was 35 degrees at 10 a.m. and the greens were lightening fast, but our kids were able to keep their composure.”
Jack Czerkowicz and Luke Pierre both shot 77s to finish tied for third. Brady Mills carded an 83 while John Bongiorno shot an 86.
“We dropped from Div. 2 to Div. 3 so they were all brand new teams,” Cabe said of the competition. “Golf is golf. You have to play your ‘A’ game on that day.”
“Old Rochester Regional High School has a really incredible group of golfers this year,” said Old Rochester athletic director Chris Carrig. “The Bulldogs were unrelenting out there on the links. They worked hard, played hard and really made us all very proud.”
The Bulldogs also won the Div. 3 South Sectional championship earlier this month with 318 points, finishing in front of St. John Paul II (337) and Norwell (343).
Czerkowicz was the low medalist of the meet, shooting a 76. Pierre carded a 77. Mills (82) and August Hebert (83) also contributed to the victory.
“This is the first time we’ve won the sectionals and the state finals,” Cabe said.
