6:19 🔑 Key benefits: connection, lag, rhythm, and arm extension

This right arm golf drill teaches the same fundamentals Ben Hogan right arm advocates emphasized – elbow leading the downswing with stored power. The instructor demonstrates how placing your left hand on your upper right arm creates shoulder unity while allowing natural golf right arm mechanics. Learn the shortstop throwing motion (long, short, long) that builds lag, rhythm, and the crucial right arm extension that points directly at your target for pin-seeking accuracy.

What you’ll learn:
-How to set up the right arm only drill with proper hand placement
-The “long, short, long” right arm formula like a shortstop throw
-Why elbow-led downswing prevents over-the-top casting
-Ben Hogan’s “three right hands” power concept in action
-The mini bungee cord feeling for proper elbow connection
-45-degree incline plane for natural wrist and elbow mechanics
-Point and shoot arm extension technique for target accuracy
-How this drill builds rhythm, lag, balance, and connection simultaneously

When you get that nine iron from the middle of the fairway after you hit a big high nasty bomb, you’re not looking to hit it 25 or 30 feet, you’re looking to knock the paint off the flag, to stuff it, to absolutely knock the flag out of the hole. Well, today I’m going to show you a drill that’s going to give you pinpoint point andoot accuracy from the fairway so you can stuff it and make more birdies. Yes, we’re talking about the right arm only drill today. and I’m going to show you this drill that absolutely completely transformed my game as a college player and sent me to three consecutive US amateurs in eight college victories. Hi, my name is Greg Jones and welcome to the channel Finish First. Glad you’re here. I’m the director of instruction at Steelwood Country Club here in South Alabama. I’ve got 30 plus years of experience and I coach a lot of tournament players and these guys want to make birdies. So, I’m going to show you how to stuff it, pinpoint laser accuracy from the fairway with your irons today. Let’s get into right arm only. All right, here we go with a right arm only drill. I’m just going to set up just like normal. I’m going to get my right hand and right hand grip nice and neutral, my normal stance. I’ve got nine iron here, so I’m going to set up to it just like a nine iron. And I’m going to take my left hand and just place it right here on my upper right arm. Now, there’s not a whole lot of pressure here in this right hand. This is just tying my shoulders together so that they work in unison and not opposite of each other. And then just some nice medium swings. And this is what I love this finish right here in my natural right arm path. Not very hard. And to hit it solid, you’ve got to be in rhythm. If you get out of rhythm, you are not going to hit it solid. So, it’s going to take you a few right arm only. So, let’s talk about what’s happening as I do this. Right arm only. The formula for the right arm is long, short, long, long, short, long. Just like if a shorts stop is throwing a ball to first base. Long, short, long. And you notice when I do that, like Hogan said, the elbow is leading. Okay? And that puts this right hand and right arm right here in this slot where he said he wish he had three right hands to have triple power. That’s kind of a big deal that we want this elbow leading the down swing and not the shoulder. Because if the shoulder leads the down swing, you’re going to get over the top and the right elbow. All the great say they want it kind of tucked, right? We don’t want it We don’t want to get this right elbow behind us back here. That would be stuck. And Tiger used to do that a little bit early in his career. He would get a little bit stuck, get way out front with his body. So he and Butch had to work to get his arms down to get his elbow in front of him. But this right elbow is kind of like there’s a little mini bungee cord right off this right elbow that’s connected to your side and it’s going to expand a little bit, but it’s going to retract right back down in front of you. And this right arm only drill will teach it to you. A little out of sync there. I kind of rushed it. There we go. Beautiful right arm path. And you can see that this as I set it, having this having this hand on the upper arm right here is going to let the wrist set naturally and the elbow fold naturally on this beautiful incline 45°ree incline plane. It teaches you lag, rhythm, right arm extension. Beautiful right arm extension on that one. That was the best one. And so what this what this is building for me is this feeling that I can just reach out and point and touch my target. Point and shoot. Laser straight accuracy. There we go. building connection, rhythm, upper body, lower body, and arm synchronization. Now, if you get where you can hit it solid doing this, it’s going to take you a few. I don’t know how many I did there, maybe nine or 10. It might take you a few. But when you can hit it solid, just a nice smooth nine iron off a T, and you can hit it solid repeatedly, you’re going to have rhythm. You’re going to have lag. You’re going to have balance. You’re going to have the right elbow leading. You’re going to have this beautiful right arm extensor action. That right arm is going to extend beautifully right to your target. So, you can point and shoot at the flag and knock it out of the hole. stuff it and make more birdies. [Music] [Music] All right, there’s five good ones in a row for you. Put those on a loop or make a clip and watch those over and over. Pay attention to the rhythm that’s required to hit that shot. All the right timing, all the right sequencing. This right arm only drill. Huge difference in my game. It is my go-to drill. It might be yours, too. Watch it over and over. See if you don’t point and shoot and make a lot of birdies. So, the benefits are you’re connected to stay on a shallow plane. If that right arm and right elbow is connected, you’ll stay shallow. If that right elbow or right arm gets out, you’re going to get steep and over the top. Stored power and lag. We’re going to drive this right elbow in here. We’re going to let the elbow lead the down swing, not the right shoulder, and leave this right wrist extended, right hand extended, so that we can have stored power and hit it with three right hands, as Hogan said. And then you’re going to you’re going to feel that throwing motion kind of like a short stop throwing to first or skipping a stone as Ben Hogan said, that long short long long short long action of the right arm. And when you feel that, that again, that’s the elbow leading the shoulder. And then that beautiful right arm extensor action. This is probably my favorite part because this is the point andoot part of it. When that right arm extends out towards the target, you’re pointing and shooting right at the flag. And that is your natural arm path. And then of course the music of the swing, as I say, there’s the rhythm, the tempo, the timing, and the balance that comes along with it. And that’s invaluable as well. And as you get good at it, what you’re going to find is it’s going to really prevent casting over the top. So, look for these benefits and see how it’s going to help you. And maybe put those last few swings on a loop to see it over and over. Hey, thanks for watching right arm only. 1. You hit 10 balls. I also noticed you didn’t take a divot, just “bruising” the grass at best.

  2. Hmmm Question Coach Greg.??? I know someone that actually doesn't have a right arm…. does this drill work with a left arm? Can they be a left arm monster? 💪 If not, what do you recommend?

  3. Coach how do you fix toe shanks with woods and drivers… only half of the ball is on the toe upon impact.. cant figure it out.. appreciate it if you can make a video about this

  4. Greg, first, thank you so much for you generous nature is sharing what you know.

I'm a 66-year-old athletic duffer for 55 years, but have gotten better and better. I am an absolute range-rat. Your practice vid on how many out of 10 can you hit, was money.
I can hit beautiful drives and irons, 8 out of 10, but I KNOW I could be hittimg it a lot farther. My beautifully-hit forged-7 iron will go 145 and my older Ping Driver will go about 220. Unacceptable.

I have always heard that rotation should come from your feet up. It very much seems to be that when you are saying "rotation" that what you are saying and doing is concentrating on rotating your CHEST! Is this right? (and yes, I have watched ALL your videos mutiple times.)

    You are a GIFT!
