A perfect lie on a par 3 tee should be taken advantage of, so make sure you aren’t making striking tee shots with your irons more difficult than it needs to be.

Too high, and you can catch the ball high on the face, leading to weak flights and inconsistent distance.

Too low and you might even hit a dreaded thin bullet and go screaming over the back of the green.

We don’t want either of these.

Here’s a simple to use guide on how high to tee your irons so you have the best chance of solid strikes, consistent ball flights and more accurate golf shots…

Iron T height basics. Try and get the ball to line up somewhere with around the third groove. I see lots of amateurs placing their iron shots with the tea really high in the air, encouraging off the top weak hits. If you want to put it on the ground, go for it. Always easier to use a slight tea. You want it just off the ground. Get that ball somewhere lined up with around the third groove on your face for straighter, more consistent strikes. You are welcome.

  1. When I first started to play I hit of the turf on shortish par 3’s. It was suggested to me to do just as you demonstrated so as not to give up an advantage the game gives you.
