Want to make more short putts and build confidence on the greens? In this lesson, top-ranked golf coach Shawn Callahan (https://shawncallahangolf.com/) breaks down the Star Drill — which is one of the simplest and most effective putting drills in golf. 🏌️♂️
The Star Drill helps you improve distance control, consistency, and mental focus by practicing putts from multiple points around the hole. Set up 5–6 balls in a star pattern from different distances and angles, then work your way around the circle. With just a little practice, you’ll instantly develop a smoother stroke, better control, and the confidence to drain every 3–5 footer you face on the course.
Whether you’re a weekend golfer or chasing scratch, this pro-level putting drill will help you eliminate 3-putts, sharpen your short game, and start rolling the ball with purpose.
So try the Star Drill today and watch your putting stats improve in a hurry!👇

All right. So, we hit a bunch of chip shots. We put some balls close. Now, we have to obviously make the putt. So, you’ve got a couple balls set up here. Talk me through what what we got going on here. Well, this is just a simple star drill. So, I’ve got a hole here. It’s actually a little bit on a slope, too. These things are all like uh 3 to 5t away. Mhm. So, these are putts that you should make that you don’t necessarily make, but all you want to do is just sit here and try to knock these in. And I wouldn’t try to knock them in fast. Like you set up to each one, take your time and make sure you’re set. Pre-shot routine. Now, is there a way where it’s like you start here, if you make it, move to the next one? Yeah. And then if you miss a move left or right, or is it just This is a good drill. This is practicing golf here. So now, the thing with putting, you want to get your you want to get your putter pointed at your target. You want to have your a good ball position you can return the club face square to. So then would I start over? Is it just that’s feedback of Okay. Well, yeah. I mean, if you were doing this for a drill as practice, what I would say is like um do this with six balls like this and do it till you go around it twice without missing any. So twice. If you miss one, you start over. So that would be three. Yep. Right. That’s going to miss. Oh, he’s starting over. I hit that one too firm. It puts a little pressure on you, too, for these. So, it does. And it’s funny because you’re trying not to move through it fast to make sure you’re going through your routine. Yeah, but you don’t want to be out here till tomorrow. Exactly. So, I had to start over on that one, too. I believe I left it short. One. We’ll let you off the hook with once around. All right. Two. Good. Let’s see if I can make all all six. The big things about putting is, you know, getting the face lined up and getting the ball started on line with enough speed to go in. Those are the main things. Then there’s tempo. There’s setup. Yeah. I think having a good uh setup, knowing your exact ball position, your exact posture and stuff that’s just like aiming a rifle, you know, really. This is a fun drill to do. Yeah. It keeps uh things fresh and not so boring, too. Let’s see if I get it. Each one of these putts is different. Some break left, some break right, some are uphill, some are downhill. So So what makes what makes that like I just went through all six, didn’t think? Didn’t go through a lot of pressure. Yet when I’m on a course, if I know that I have this for par, I’m thinking about it. If I miss this, I’m going to have a bogey. Or if I have a birdie, don’t leave this short. And then I leave it short and it’s like, oh, damn it. Tap in par. which are fine, but when you have a three-footer like that, what’s the psychology around this where this I mean, I just went through all six without even thinking. Well, I think it builds confidence when you see the ball going in. Yeah. Often you start to feel confident. You can’t just, you know, tell yourself a thousand times, I’m a good putter and and it’ll happen. You need to see the ball going in. You have to feel like, you know, you you make all your five-footers. It’s like a basketball player who can’t make a shot, goes to the free throw line, sees it go through, and all of a sudden he just gets gets hot. Well, these are the putts you should make. They’re not they’re not I mean, I’m not saying that you will make all of them, but they are the ones you should make. So, I really don’t have anybody practice long long putts because your feel as soon as you We could sit here and practice back and forth across the green for an hour and go to the first te, get to the first hole, have a long putt. We forgot all about it. Exactly. Plus, it’s a different situation. Different slope, different speeds depending on, you know, how the sun’s hitting it. I think practice, you know, these Yeah. practice, you know, four or five footers, practice 10footers, practice 20 footers. This is great. You know, I don’t I think when you do I think that putt that’s over there 75t away is easier to make if you feel better about your game from inside of that. Exactly. Then you don’t feel so bad when you leave it short because the pressure of that there’s no pressure. Just get it close, right? You know you’re not going to make that. But when you hit it and you’re like, well, now I left it here, which is still pretty far for a say it’s a par putt. You can confidently come up and be like, I just made Say it’s hole one. 15 minutes ago I did the star drill. I sunk six of these in a row. Once or twice around. Boom. Right. Nailed it. I’m good. But you know, even at that 75 from here, I would want you to try and make it because when you aim small, you miss small. Yeah. And that’s how you get the thing within, you know, 3 or 4 feet.
