Break 80 FAST With These 5 Simple Tweaks!
In this video, I’m going to give you five tips that are going to help you break 80. And by following these, you’re going to break 80 fast. And don’t worry if you’re looking to break 100 or 90 for the first time, these tips are still going to be relevant to you and the things that you can implement into your game to help you play better. Now, if you’re looking to break 80 for the first time, you’re probably hovering around a 10 handicap and looking to get into single figures. Our friends at Shot Scope have provided us with some data of a 10 handicapper versus a five handicapper just to pinpoint some differences. And the first point to help you break 80 is all to do with this the putter. And we can see just here the difference between a five handicapper and a 10 handicapper in three puts. I’ve also added in there the 25 handicapper just to show how many they’re having and how costly they can be. Because if we are racking up three putts, and it may not seem a lot from those stats, 1.5 to 2.4, but it’s a shot. And if you’re looking to break 80, you’ve not got many shots that you can throw away. So, a couple of little things that I want you to do to help you limit your three putts. Now, we might think keeping the three put stat would be down to holding a few more puts from that range. Yes, that’s going to help. But the big reason or the big way we can keep three puts down is actually to do with the longer putt that we find here. Because a lot of golfers because we are in that bracket where we’re not a single figure, we’re not hitting it as close as maybe the tall pros or that lower handicapper, we’re going to be faced with a longer put to start off with. So, the first thing that you should do every time that you get to your golf ball, a is mark it, and just give it a little clean. Because if it’s got dew on the golf ball, a little bit of mud, it’s unwanted rubbish on there that’s going to cause it to maybe roll slower. It might throw it offline. You’re not going to get the purest of rolls, thus you’re not going to get as close as possible as you would like. So, simply mark it and clean it. The next thing that I want you to do when you get these longer puts, and this is where you’re really going to start to get the three put stat down, is actually figure out what’s going on. And what I mean by that is, I know we’re going to be further away, and a lot of golfers will walk up the fairway, plunk the trolley or bag on the side, walk to the golf ball, mark it, and just stand here waiting for their turn. And as they do this, they’re not taking into account how far we are. They’re not taking into account any slopes that we may have. We might have a little bit of grain on the green. There might be wind and things like that and we get over it. We hit our first putt and it comes up six foot short and then all of a sudden that’s the one that we miss. All I want you to simply do while you’re other playing partner is having their turn or if it’s your turn first, mark it and you can be quick about this. Just literally walk the line. just come along because what you’re doing firstly is giving your brain a little bit of an acknowledgement of how far actually this put is because sometimes our eyes might deceive us ever so slightly. So, we’re going to get the distance factor. And also walking along here now, what I’ve noticed is where the break is. It’s a little bit more right to left. I would have thought that was pretty straight just stood back there. But now I’ve gained that knowledge as I’m going through. So once I’ve done that, then I can go in. I know it’s a tiny bit downhill. So, I’m going to play this pretty much whole high because it’s only a tiny bit. And then the third and final thing that I want you to do, do not have your practice strokes staring at the ground because here again, we’re not getting any feedback as to how far we are. I can’t see the flag. I don’t know how far to hit it. It’s a guess. What I want you to do, you’ve walked the line. You’ve cleaned the ball. You’ve gained a little bit of knowledge on this put. Now, pick your spot that you want to try and finish this ball at here and just look at that as we have the practice strokes and we start to get an idea but from our eyes feeding back to our hands of how hard we should be swinging the putter. From there, then I can get in and we can start to see hopefully that we get those putts within a holable distance and start to limit those three putts. Easy as that. Limit the three puts. Another way we can break H fast is to do with par threes and specifically par threes that are 150 yards to 200 yd in distance. Because when we look at the stats as we see here, a five handicapper is hitting the green 39% of the time. A 10 handicapper is 28%. And just look at the 25 handicapper there. That may not seem a lot, but it is. Because think of it like this. If you had four par threes on the golf course that were all over 150 yards, the chances are you’re only hitting one, maybe two of those in a round. And that’s if you’re swinging well as well. And there’s a couple of reasons for this. As we take a look at this hole here for me, ladies, the 12th today, the flag is situated at 168 yards. Now, in front of the green, there are four bunkers that are just waiting to gobble your ball up. beyond the green, especially when we get into these longer par threes. What we will see is that there’s not much trouble at the back. And also, it feeds in at the back most of the time as well. So, really basic, look at the back number 174 here. I would maybe pick a club that is going to go back there. Also, when it comes to selecting that club, when we’re getting on to longer holes, are you using the right tools for the job? if it’s closer to that 200 yard club. And we’re seeing that five iron is the choice of club that you’re using. Statistically, five iron is the club that most golfers lose the most shots with. So maybe it’s time to think of a sevenwood, a hybrid, maybe think of getting rid of those longer irons cuz they do cause damage. And then when it actually comes to the shot selection, when we’re going to hit our golf shot, a couple of things that I want to do, if we’re going to be pegging it up, number one, when we do that, make sure if you have got an iron that you don’t peg it up too high because if you do so, you’ll catch the top of the blade and then the ball won’t go the distance you want. Most likely, it’s going to come up short and that, as we said earlier, is where the trouble is. We can see today the flag is located in the middle. So, I would suggest that we aim directly at the middle. When you get on a hole that is over 150 yards, I would suggest that all you ever do is forget where the flag is and you only play to the middle. Then from there, maybe add in just a little bit of shot shape as well. Are you a little bit of a slicer? Are you a little bit of a drawer? Do you pull it a little bit more often? Maybe just build that into the equation as well. If you’re a slicer and you’re aiming up the right cuz you think the hole needs a draw, don’t do so. play a couple of yards off the center of the green and try and work that fade back in. If we can do that, we should start to see that we hit a few more greens on the par threes in this yardage and start to actually break 80 pretty fast. And not my best strike there. I’ve taken enough club and actually the ball is center of the green and I’ve got a chance at making par, maybe even a birdie. Now, the next thing to break 80 fast is keeping the car crashes off your scorecard. And what I mean by that is limiting the big numbers we make. Because we sometimes think to shoot lower scores, we have to make a ton of birdies. It’s not the case. It’s actually doubles we need to keep off the scorecard. And just look here, the five handicapper versus the 10 handicapper. The 10 handicapper is making double the amount of doubles. And that’s a quick way to lose shots. Also, just check out how many the 25 handicapper is making. So, what we want to try and do is limit those big numbers. And it comes down to scenarios like this where we get a little bit overzealous and confident in our abilities. The 11th hole here at Formul Ladies, 307 yards. I walk onto this tea thinking I get a good one of these away. I’m going to be putting for eagle. What I’m not thinking is, well, what if it goes wrong? What if I have to take the line, which I have to, which is down the right hand side over all the trouble, and I just leak it a little bit. I lose my golf ball. I’m three off the tea. I’m now making double if I make par with my next ball. Because something where we can make a simple hole and one where we think I can really get birdie if there’s a great one. There is time obviously for that risk and reward. But overegging our ability when we don’t need to can really lead to racking up high numbers. Oh, it’s No, that one’s dead. That one is dead. As where sometimes on holes like these, we can literally plot our way down, give ourselves a chance maybe at birdie, but know that par is going to be the worst score. Build a score, don’t destroy one. So the next way to break 80 fast is all to do with your up and down stats. As we can see here, a five handicapper versus a 10 handicapper, there is a difference. It may not seem that much 37 versus 49%. But then think that the five handicapper is actually hitting more greens as well. So not only is the 10 handicapper missing more greens, they’re not getting up and down as regularly. And that’s due to reliance on one shot. When we see a higher handicapper versus a low handicapper, we see that their skill acquisition is getting better the lower we are getting. So what I want you to try and do is experiment with a few different shots. Learn to play maybe a shot with your lob wedge. Maybe learn to play one like a bump and run with a mid iron, a seven or eight iron. Learn to maybe take putter when putter is needed. Don’t just always try and play the same shot around the greens because a lot of the times that isn’t going to work. You need to adapt to the situation you’re in and figure out what shot is best to get you close to give you a chance of getting up and down. And our final thing to break 80 fast is here the scoring zone when we have gap wedge or sand wedge in our hand. Because what we will see in a moment from the stats is that Oh no, it’s not. I didn’t quite get it there. When we look at the stats, the gap wedge and the sand wedge between the five and 10 handicapper, it’s a jarring difference between how many greens are actually hit with these clubs. And that’s because I think when we get into a gap wedge in a sand wedge, and it’s really noticeable when you start to play with players who are breaking 80 consistently and are hitting those 75 numbers. When we get into this zone of inside 100 yards to about 30 yards, they don’t struggle. They don’t panic. They don’t feel a little bit lost with what club they should be hitting, how far they should be swinging it. They have a system. And it’s real simple. You can build a wedge chart. We’re going to flash mine up on screen here now. And it’s just simply having three points that you would feel your lead arm swings to being the belt, the chest, and the shoulders. And by doing that, you can get the carry distance of each club, your 50°, your 54, and your 58 for me. So, gap wedge, lob wedge, sand wedge. And you can even do it pitching wedge and nine iron, eight iron if you wanted to. But what that allows you to do on a shot like this where I’m now 80 yards from the green instead of guessing I know I can pick the number off my chart. I can pick the relevant club and then I can pick the relevant point I need to swing to. So for me, I’ve gone for a 54° here and I can make a swing that I know if I contact this nicely and I’ve taken into account all the conditions, I shouldn’t have any worries of actually hitting a pretty decent pitch and firstly eliminating that non-green hit number, but actually doing something like that, giving myself a good look at par, if not birdie. So it’s real simple. Devise that wedge chart. It will take a little bit of time, but you can just go down, do some carry numbers, and then you’ll start to wedge it like God. So, those are five ways we can break 80 fast, get those in your game, and you should start to see the numbers dropping. Guys, I hope you enjoyed that video. Remember to subscribe. Hope so my best are between 84 /90🏌️♂️🏌️♂️⛳
Leaves it 6ft short
Useful vid…but need to proof read the graphics – especially the wedge chart as it has the same numbers for different lofts
Hi Matt, great tips. I'm one of those that is hovering between 11 and 15 handicap, where my downfall is the blow up holes. I can be going along well and then put a ball OB at any time. This is killing my scores. Also, at the end of your video, your 54 degree chart and your 58 degree chart are the same. I know its just an error. I need to do this myself also to avoid guessing my approach shots to the green. Great instructional video and keep up the good work.
I play off 8.
Have 3-4 birdies a round, but 2-3 doubles or triples.
Don't clean or mark the ball on the green, slow play bores me.
Hit driver whenever possible, and take on every hero shot going.
I find golf more enjoyable this way.
You're last man standing, Matt. Shiels got boring and Finch sold his soul to the devil. Keep up the good work.
Matthew. Is Mizuno going to bring out a 9 wood? St Max?
Interesting video Matt, break 80, dream on! 90, maybe?
Last tip the best !
Matt why do you carry both a 54 and 58 degree wedge. The go the same distance according to the charts.
Surely in the 3 putts vs 2 putts discussion you need to know how far away you are for the first putt? By which I mean if you are pitching into the green to 50 feet vs 15 feet, then the chance of a 3 putt is higher for the 50 footer. My point here is maybe the real stat to look at is proximity to the hole on approach – you could have 2 players equally good or bad at putting, the better chipper/pitcher will have fewer 3 putts, look like a better putter but actually isn't
