The ball gets buried. Can he escape from this? In the third round of the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open, Sam Burns’s second shot got stuck in the lip of a fairway saw bunker. It didn’t come out. It just stayed there. Half in the sand, half in the grass. Burns called for a ruling. And after a lengthy discussion, officials determined that relief would not be granted since the top layer of sod was still considered part of the bunker. So, he had no choice but to play it as it lies. He took the shot, but the ball didn’t escape. It rolled right back into the bunker. Burns ended up making a triple bogey on the hole. Tough break.
