Coil & Hinge Iron Drill | GolfPass

[Music] Hey golf pass. I’m Amy Cho. We’re out at Omni Champions Gate Resorts in Orlando, Florida. Today I’m going to help you hit your irons longer with better accuracy. When you are trying to hit your irons really hard, a lot of times the arms will take over a lot of tension here and it’s really going to interfere with proper coil and proper hinge. So, in order for me to have you hit your irons longer and straighter, I really have to fix your coil. Boom. Like this at the top of the back swing. Hips are about 45 degrees turned. Shoulders about 90 degrees turned. A perfect coil right there. And then hinge. Boom. To give you nice wrist snap through the ball for better distance. But those two things, coil and hinging, are really difficult parts of the swings to fix. But don’t you guys worry. I’m going to Amy for you. meaning making golf simple, fun, and effective. And I have one really great drill to fix both at the same time. So, all you really need is a towel and a hinge tool. Probably seen this guy a lot. I’ve worked with this tool a lot when I was a junior golfer. So, here it is. You’re going to go ahead and tee up your ball. So, you’re not going to pay attention to how you hit the ball. And then you’re going to put your golf towel just under your armpits like so. And then you’re going to just make half swings making sure that hinge tool hits your forearm one, two, twice during your swing. So you’re not worried about how you hit it. You’re focusing on that hinge tool mainly with just a simple simple drill like this. You can see how well my body is turning. My body is actually forced to turn because of the towel under my armpits. And then f focusing on this hinge tool is really making your hands hinge rather than rotate. A lot of amateurs tend to mistake that hinging is this rotation move which is incorrect. Hinging is more of this up and down move. Cocking and unccocking your wrist like this. So just having these two do all the work so your brain doesn’t really have to work as much. You’re really building muscle memory to get your coil and hinge going correctly. And once you put a lot of time into this drill, I actually want to spend your first full practice session just hitting these shots. And then in the second practice session, I actually want you to alternate 50/50 between the drill and the actual shots. And you will feel the difference in your body turn and your wrist action through the ball. Boom. Just like that. Work on your coil and hinge to gain more distance and accuracy. If you’re a Golf Pass member, please go ahead and leave any questions you might have and I’ll be getting back to you guys on those.
