Governor calls, deputies answer: Martin County team sent to Alligator Alcatraz

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has deployed 11 deputies to Florida’s controversial Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention facility in the Everglades.

Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed the team, part of the agency’s federally certified Rapid Response Unit, began a week-long deployment Oct. 5.

The request came from the governor’s office through the Florida Sheriffs Association, which organizes statewide manpower rotations.

“This was not an emergency operation,” Budensiek said. “They asked us several months ago to help with that rotation our rapid response team has federal certifications in crowd control and dealing with riots, insurrections, anything that would have huge impacts. This is just an extension of that same program where we do manpower sharing with our state and federal partners.”

Expert says numerous sea turtle nests destroyed on Singer Island

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A sea turtle expert in our area says numerous sea turtle nests have been destroyed recently on Singer Island due to beach erosion and rough surf.

Debbie Sobel, President of Sea Turtle Conservation League of Singer Island, a non-profit volunteer group, estimates over 100 sea turtle nests have been washed away in the past month or so on Singer Island.

She says it’s the worst she’s seen in at least 20 years.

“We’ve lost about a hundred nests so far if not more. So it’s a very depressing end to our turtle season. This is pretty bad,” Sobel said.

An alligator walks into a bar in Florida… No, seriously

STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — It sounds like the setup to a joke, but for patrons at a local tiki bar in Stuart, happy hour came with an unexpected twist — and a few extra teeth.

The Stuart Police Department (SPD) posted on Monday that officers responded to a rather unusual call: an alligator had wandered into a bar, Harlow’s Hideout. Unlike the typical rowdy guest trying to dodge a tab, this one had scales, a tail, and a knack for dramatic entrances.

Officers arrived at the scene and said the gator was taken into custody without incident and no injuries were reported — just one wild story to tell and a few shaken-up cocktails.

Police say that the alligator was relocated to a more “suitable venue, where the only cocktails are in the swamp and the sun never sets on happy hour.”
