Now, if we think of all the important elements in the golf swing, what do we think is the most important? You’ve all got your own subjective opinions out there, but for me, one of the most important things is the grip. It’s the only point of contact we’ve got with the golf club. And a lot of you out there, I’ve noticed, are making the same single mistake with it comes to the grip. There’s a whole host of elements in the golf swing that can go horribly wrong for you because you’re trying to compensate for that grip that you’ve got going on. What grip is it? Let me show you. Before we start, don’t forget to hit that subscribe button. It’s hugely appreciated when you watch these videos because it helps me to help you improve your game, which is the whole purpose of this channel. So, there’s three main ways of holding this golf club. There’s the baseball grip, all 10 fingers on that hold of that golf club. There’s the interlocking grip where we’re interlocking the little finger of our trail hand and we’re interlocking it with the index finger of our lead hand. And then there’s the overlapping grip, the varden grip as we like to call it, where that little finger on our trail hand, our right hand for right-handed golfers, is again over the index finger of our lead hand. Now, I’m not saying you you’ve got to grip it one way or the other, but what I am saying to you is a lot of people make the mistake of interlocking this golf club. Now, again, so many great golfers, your Tiger Woodes, your Rory Maroys, your Jack Nicholases, they all interlocked. Now, I’m not saying interlocking is a bad thing. However, the way you interlock is a bad thing. Why do I say that? Because most of you have what we call a really deep interlock and you really push those fingers together when it comes to the setup. But we got a massive problem when we really deeply interlock those hands because the problem is then your left hand again for right-handed golfers is too far underneath the golf club and your right hand appears too far underneath the golf club. What the heck does this do? It completely shuts off the wrists. You are absolutely manned down if this happens because the problem is if we can’t use the wrists, we are going to struggle to swing this golf club, let alone keep that face square and let alone get that club down to the ground. So, you have to avoid this at all cost. We have to avoid that deep interlock. If you are going to interlock, I want it to be just a nice easy interlock where your first top joints of your fingers are just pushing through there. You’ll notice how there’s a big gap here and there’s a big gap here. Not really deep interlock, which we’re aligning those joints up together. Now, to a lot of you, this is going to feel really strange. And if it does, apologies. But if it does feel if it does feel ultra strange and you don’t like it, I would recommend going to the 10 finger grip because it’s just a lot easier on the fingers and we’ve got all fingers on that golf club where we can allow those hands to be in the position we want them to be because the problem is when we deep interlock, it’s such a restrictive motion when it comes to the hand and the wrist position. It’s just not worth it. So, I would recommend you go into a 10finger grip. Now, again, all these videos are saying, “Oh, you got to overlap or you got to interlock.” No, it’s nonsense. You do what the heck you want to do as long as you position your hands in a way that you can allow your wrists to maneuver during that golf swing because if they can’t, you are going to be struggling. So, I would recommend no deep interlock that is banned. I want I would recommend a 10 finger grip if anything to allow those wrists to do their work for us in a swing with freedom.
