This video is going to be a right good match 2v1, but also it’s about a lad called Dave who bought a golf club for over a million pound and turned its fortunes round which you’re going to see today. He’s done a lot of things. We’re going to ask him a lot of questions but we have been a match for money and he’s also made us some brisket sandwiches which are fantastic. So it’s 2v1. I love me golf and I just thought I’d like to once we finish the Formula 1 circuit is take my expertise into into into a golf club and make it diverse as as we can with the food and and enhance that obviously on the catering side and of course learn about golf and and put my mark on a golf course and and we looked at a few um this one was close to because we got a house in Spain and a place in Morocco so this was close to Stanstead and you know the budget was about right uh and and and we liked you know, it’s it’s in in in Norwich. So, have you ever played the course or before you call? Yeah, I I play obviously they went and played it and I got a few of my friends to come and play it and uh to to see what it was like and how you know to talk to the members about any problems and again it’s like a lot of the smaller golf clubs that they had problems with, you know, financial problems in the way of trying to keep the thing in in tiptop condition because it’s not Rolls-Royce. It is it’s a car and you know and there’s different levels of car. There’s an Aston Martin all the way down to a Honda to to a Ford Escort and you know and it’s it’s it was it was something that I thought we could enhance and turn around without being disrespectful. Yeah. Just like turn just improve. So I’m going to ask you then you seem a very smart man. You would have done your due diligence but was there any hidden costs? What got you? I mean when we took it over through no fault of anybody’s you know the economic hit came the uh the um the fuel the sorry the electric bill tripled so we went from a grand and a half a month to 4 1/2 grand and five in which is not 10 p on a cup of tea as you can imagine that was really really hard. Um basic minimum wage has gone up 40% in 3 years. So that’s another hit because we’ve got quite a few people on basic minimum wage. the um and now of course the b the business rates um the the the COVID discount goes the COVID concession has now been go for it has been taken away so our our rates last year were £450 a month and now they’re £157 a month and again that’s not 510 on a point of Guinness you know it it’s substantial well can I ask then so rates have gone up three times electric That’s now calmed down a bit, but that went up three times. That went up to 50,000 from 15. Has it gone back down now? Yeah, it’s got it’s calmed down a bit now. In all this members are not going to like this. You can’t put your fees up. Well, we we they they do understand and of course mean halfway through a season. Of course you can’t. No. And it’s like your housekeeping. You have to put your housekeeping up. Um I mean the the other big one of course as a proprietary club is is uh uh VAT. you know, we charge, our membership here is 1,150 this year, of which we give 200 some odd quid to VAT, so I only get £930. Um, a members club doesn’t pay the VAT threshold that we pay. Uh, and of course, my first my first VAT bill is like £44,000. And you think instead of giving it back to HMRC, what you could get for £44,000? You know, that gives you new sand in all the bunkers. That gets you a new green keeper and equipment. that gets you a new mo cut cutter, a greens mower, you know, 44k is, but that’s and um it it doesn’t seem quite fair that uh proprietary golf clubs pay 20% and richer clubs which tend to be members clubs don’t. When the head green keeper left, I promoted Jack from the best thing you’ve done and and uh his work ethic and and the the the members love him. Uh he is worth it. It’s fantastic and he never never lets me down and he’s just a work. He’s just like one of those bloody clockwork Duracell rabbits. You wind him up and away he goes and he just don’t bring me any problems and he’s just he’s just a perfect employee. And Adam’s the same as well. Adam will help behind the bar. And it were these reviews but when we got there it were nothing of the sort like some tea boxes was a bit crap but it’s like anywhere they were surrounded by trees that could have been wet. They wouldn’t have got the tea boxes like that. And you you touched on some of there didn’t you want to bring some up. Yeah. It’s it it does it’s not fair to have um a a Google review and that was that was insane because I remember looking and think oh what’s the worst golf club in the world and then you said oh I’m coming all the way down and then I’m thinking you’re getting close to this where I and I was a member of Haythrop Park and it’s it’s absolutely not the worst golf club in the world of course I mean it’s a huge setting and with a great big mansion as a you know picturesque as you like it’s difficult but it it’s not fair that anybody can write Google reviews right or wrong especially wrong unqualified and people read them and it affects livelihoods, it affects income, it affects business. Just because somebody had a bad round there and then tars that with it’s the worst golf cup in the world. I’ll give you an example. We’ve just run 10 golf courses in Scotland. We call it hidden gems, right? Yeah. Pro me at nine of 14, right? And when we finished, we all didn’t review them, but we all said, “Let’s do our top three to one.” Obviously, some people like Link, some people like Parkland. Yeah.
