Good morning. Welcome back to the channel. It is Dan Webster here at Li Golf Academy in the northwest of the UK. It’s a bright and breezy early Saturday morning and I’ve just re received the brand new Callaway Opus SP wedge. We’re going to do a quick review on it. Before we get to that, thank you for stopping by on the channel. If you are new to the channel, do appreciate seeing you. Make sure you give us a little thumbs up. Comment below if you tried this new wedge or if you’d like to try it. Give us all a comment. Or if there’s any content ideas you want me to cover, let me know. So, I’d really appreciate it if you just took the time to hit that subscribe button and join this growing community back to the club. So, this is my standard Opus wedge. Okay, these have only been out uh just under a year and nothing wrong with them. really like them. But Callaway have gone, you know what? We want to create a wedge that helps golfers create a bit more of a penetrating flight, but with plenty of spin. So, this Opus SP wedge, two-piece construction, there’s more weight dispersed towards the top of the club. What that basically means is the ball flight will stay lower. Right? So, this is a wedge, 58 degrees, but designed to have a more penetrating flight. What a lot of golfers do, they scoop the wedges, release the club a little bit too much. Ball pops up. You We’ve all done it playing into the wind and that ball has kind of popped up a little bit high with those flicky wrists. Now, you’re going to lose distance when that happens. And you’re also going to lose a little bit of control when it gets up there and floats. So, yes, technically you can make sure you keep a little bit of forward shaft, but that’s not easy for everybody and can cause other problems. So, kind of have said, “Right, well, let’s just move the weight around and give people more control.” That speed pocket as well gives forgiveness. It’s not just a pure blade. It’s two-piece. Like I’ve said, the grooves, there’s a 17 degree angle groove, which basically means there’s more groove on the ball, more spin, and there’s a bit of a uh a milled face, which is for extra bite. Okay, extra bite. That’s spin basically. So, what Callaway is saying is we’re going to build you a wedge which you can control the ball like that felt good. That’s nice. It’s not getting up too high, but is absolutely loaded with spin. If you’ve had chance to try any wedges lately, I know there’s other wedges launching at the minute, but this seems to be the trend. So, that had five and a half thousand spin. Okay, little Oh, that that’s a really nice flight. Little club twirl there. What I’m going to do, I’ve got my own 58 degree wedge. My original opus. Yeah, that’s launching at 30°. That’s a good launch with a 58. Happy with that. Certainly. So, the idea there’s not as much. Yeah, it’s a thinner top edge. That’s the biggest difference here. This is my original Opus, my 58. And you just There’s a distinct difference in ball flight there. Um, nice strike again. launching up that time a little bit. Yeah, 38 degrees launch. That’s interesting. Just going to have a little look at the head design again here of these wedges. So, apparently this is um design six or phase six of the design stage from Callaway. That means there was five other iterations in the design board that went to the tour players. This is the the design, the shape of the head that they preferred. I like it. is quite rounded. It does look very similar, maybe a little bit more rounded than the original Opus and that top edge just a little bit thicker, a little bit chunkier, which actually gives forgiveness. So, if you’re looking for a wedge with a bit of forgiveness, loads of feel, and you’re trying to maybe play a little bit more of a a penetrating wedge shot with loads of spin for control, just like the tour players do, this is worth giving a try. Make sure you go. That’s nice. I like that. Make sure you go and get fitted with a local PJ professional. If you need any advice or help, go and speak to your pro. Thank you for watching and uh we’ll catch you all very soon.
