Stuart Broad vs Chris Broad | Father vs Son Golf Showdown!

Well, I can go. Well, we’re doing a little bit there. Oh, are we? Yeah. What we’re doing? Just a little intro to what we’re doing. All right. Ready? Go. Okay. We’re here at Royal Wimbledon to play the threehole challenge with my dad, Chris. Um, and as we’re cricketers, we should probably toss a coin, but a ball marker for who to go first. So, the we’ll say the the windmill. That’s heads. Okay, you cool. Windmill. Headmill. It is. It is. What do you want to go first or second? I’m going to go first. Okay. And this is your hole with a shot. Good luck. Once an opening batter, always an opening batter. Let’s play. I have a Callaway four. Okay. I’ve got a Callaway one. Lovely. It’s what you do. Very solid in between the bunkers. Yeah. Happy with that? You say split the bunkers. Get away one. That’s just very you. That is You’re going to probably fly the bunkers though, aren’t you? So, you don’t need to worry about them. Is that a bit of reverse psychology you’re trying to put in my mind there? Oh, you’re just going to rely the bunkers. It’s like anything. T-shot just off the ground. You’re happy, aren’t you? Ah, it’s a bit scrappy. Get over. It is over. Just has gone. See what they say is go the right hand side. So, you got a better angle in. And you supposed to tell me that before the tea shot. Well, it wasn’t deliberate. It was a bit sort of duck hookie if I’m honest. But we’re alive. Well, you don’t want to go in those bunkers either. They’re uh you can’t get to the green. Well, you can see the lip on them for the sake. I mean, it’s ridiculously high. Yeah. Good. Well, what’s the saying there for non? That’s true. Yes. And I might play it as a par five. Just uh No, you can get there from there. What do you think? Back left pin. You want to sort of miss right and it all banks down. But I’m just getting me me yardage up on my watch. You’re a long way from here. 322 from here. Uh actually, last time we played, I think you did. You end up in the in the ditch. I don’t go that way that often, but I do try and go over this left hand bunker. It opens up a little bit more. My win to loss ratio against you would be a landslide. Uh at the moment it’s heavily in my favor, but it is heavily in your favor. I feel that’s What are you 67? Yeah, I’m 38 coming on to 39. I’ve still got time to to wingle it back my way. Oh, without a doubt. But I he always used to take the take the mick out of me in a sense that I would always get the driver on every hole and just try and hit it as far as I possibly could and get myself in trouble and then try and play magic shots out the rough whereas he been looking in the middle of the fairway bump bump bump bump. Um different ways to play. I love watching golfers that take the risk though and like hit amazing sort of risky shots. I just can’t train my brain to take the steady option. I should do that. Getting older, getting wiser. Well, I’ve got 169 uphill with the wind. I need some elevation. That’s why everything he’s got. Shut up. Pulled it into the bunkers. Or not even made the bunkers. Jing up. Get left a little bit. Just bounce down the hill slightly. Think. Okay. Okay. Think. Okay. I don’t think you want that one back. maybe putting now dad as I think now got the hardest chip shot on the whole course and I would usually walk up the hill to the right and get my putter out but I’m going to walk down just have a little watch of it. I’ve always done things just for fun and enjoyment. When I look back at my cricket growing up both dad and mom were always like, “Have you had fun? Have you enjoyed it?” And so sport for me was always about a hobby. Ultimately, you’ve got a choice of loads of different things you you can do. You want to do things that that you love and enjoy. So, although there’s always a natural competition cuz you want to win, whether that’s a monopoly or golf or cricket or anything, um there’s never been a competitive spirit that ruins a day if that makes any sense. Um so uh you know ultimately particularly now and even when I was in my teenage years just playing golf with dad was just four hours being able to spend time together chatting about not just golf pretty much everything. Um and particularly now no mobile phones for 4 hours is just heaven while doing some exercise. Uh, and you know, we talk, to be honest, we’ll spend most of our time on the golf course talking about my kids and for Nottingham Forest, what games we’re going to go to, and um, Oh, where’s he? You know, so uh, and then little technical things on the golf. So, yeah, it’s just uninterrupted time, which I love. And I’m quite enjoying how he’s walking up to the green like Jordan Spear. Wow. You got you got your little landing spot. I want No, I wanted to see where you were. And you’re in a very very awkward position. So, yes, you are. Why are you smiling? Cuz I’ve got You should be saying, “Oh, that’s unfortunate.” Cuz I’ve got a shot. State of play is I’m two and I can’t see my ball, but apparently an awkward position. Dad is two going over a bunker to a near side pin, but he’s been two net one. Two net one. And he’s been watching a lot of uh chipping videos. Yeah. Well, we’ll soon see if that’s worked. Got to get it up. Oh, it’s nice contact. That might be all right, actually. Uh, you’re putting Oh gosh. Is that me? That’s what I say. Long and far. Oh dear. That is not pleasant. What I said? I thought I was going to be there. The wind done me. Not pleasant. It’s probably me, isn’t it? Now I’m in trouble. That’s a nice roll. This is where I do the nervous glance. Is that Is that a generous give? Probably. You’re in for five. So, probably just outside of the friendship group. I’ve got two for it. Yeah, I’ve got two for it. Do you want it out? No. Leave it in, please. Sort of like this to go about 5 foot past just to make it a bit awkward. Oh, sit. That looks good. Sit, sit, sit, sit. Quite happy with that. Still you old dead sheep. still for the hole, isn’t it? He’s very good at these. Oh, no. Don’t put pressure on me. He’s very good at these. This is This is um It’s the worst suit in my game. Putting the thing that annoys me a little bit is it’s my old putter as well. I know that sounds weird being right-handed, but I ordered it online and it came right-handed instead of left-handed, which makes you think I might have clicked that button. See what I mean? She’s so solid from there. Very, very good. I’ll take it. Go on up. The wind’s going to take us right, isn’t it? Oh, it is, isn’t it? Yeah. Oh, too far left. Well, that’s in the ditch. Oh. Oh, yes. It did. It is in the ditch, but you might you might be able to sort of chip it out of there. Well, it’s red red stakes. That’s red stakes. That’s a drop, isn’t it? Well, I’ve got a new 3-wood, so part of me is hitting this because it’s new and it might not tactically be the right play, but I’m trying to go wind going left to right. I’m trying to go left of the bunkers and for it to land short of the left hand bunker. Uh, that is how I’m mentally playing the hole. But you watch this. It will go nothing like I’m planning. It’s a very negative thought. Negative or just realist? To be honest, that might be absolutely bang on. Sit. Sit. Oh, Sid. Sit. Don’t go in. If that’s short, that’s close. If that’s short, I need that little clip cutting. People think I’m quite a good golfer, but but if that’s in the bunker, that’s a bad play. Well, you struck that beautifully. You can stay. You haven’t got a ball a ball scoop, have you? Uh, there won’t be water in there. You don’t think? After all the rain we’ve had? Don’t think so. But no, the answer is I think a ball scoop should class as a club in your bag. really. You know how in cricket you have things that you just can’t quite see? So like the follow on for me when you bowl a team out for under your amount of runs and then you got to bowl again. Yeah. For me those club covers on irons you you see I’ve seen those. Yeah. Yeah. Where someone takes like five minutes to get the club cover off their seven iron. Yeah. For me. I Yeah. I don’t understand why why you would need those to be honest. Yeah. Um, yeah. I sort of part of me is now really wanting there to be water in there, but you’ve got a shot. So, you sort of get in. I haven’t got another shot. Well, I was going to say out the ditch cuz then I think it’d be quite fun footage if you fell in the ditch and got wet. As long as you were all healthy and safe when you got out of there. Um, who says there’s no competitiveness amongst us? Hey, goodness me. Do need to get level one down. Bit further on. Oh, further up. Oh, goodness. Oh, you I think you probably can play that, you know. Oh, yeah. Right. I think you can. You could get a little eight n iron out of there, I think. Where do I stand? Well, that’s your that’s a question you can answer. It’s not a great lie. Did you play as much as the modern cricketer though? You know how No. It’s become a bit of a mindset that day before a game you can get your brain off off the pressures of the match by playing. Did you do that? No. No. No. I don’t know what you got feeling. The only thing is if you drop it, you’ve got this overhanging branch. That is a well and also I’ve got that overhanging branch if I play it as well. So, but if you played a sort of a could you play a nine iron up up straight? I need I need more than a line iron, I think. Let’s hit a Let’s see if I can hit a wedge. Oh, what a connection that is. Don’t go. Don’t go in the bunker. Don’t sit. Oh, that’s exceptional. That worked. Exceptional. We’d train the day before the game in the morning and then you’d have the afternoon to yourself before you start the next day, a test match. And we found that if you’d go to your room and you just look at social media, you could get things in your mind that maybe didn’t put you in the best possible place the next day. So, group of us thought, you know what, let’s drive to a golf course. Um, put our phones in a bag, talk to talk to each other about maybe, you know, a bit stressed about tomorrow or I’m feeling great and then you’re thinking something technically completely different than you are about cricket and the afternoon would just fly by. you have a bit of food at the golf course, go back to your hotel room, and then you’re into the game the next day. And and that became quite a big habit of mine. Um I’d say the last 10 12 years of of my career. And I I I very rarely worried about the next day. I’d done my training. I knew I could sign that off, put a golf shirt on and and um and go and relax. And I know that sort of a younger crew coming through now uh of the cricket team go down go down that route. And you know, I think it I think it genuinely helps uh with the the lack of stress about the next day. A big believer do your prep, sign it off, leave the ground, and go and do something different. Uh and for me, lying in a hotel room was was not the right play for for my overthinking. 114 slightly up. Mud ball. Mud ball. I mean I I mean does it does a mud ball take yardage off? Well I mean the the pros say that it you don’t have any control over it but we don’t have any control over anyway so that’s not a problem. Right. Let you want to be just left of the flag cuz that bunker really does really does get you. Right. That looks good. Come right a little bit. Come on, wind. Help me out a bit. Oh, did that get there? Uh, maybe just a little bit short, but it’s safe. It’s fine. Have a little Try and have a two putt. Same spot. Go bit further up there. Oh, no. Yeah, it is. Same spot. Just Do you think the uphill’s just done us a bit there? Maybe. I thought the wind might just help us, but this is where secretly you’re hoping that you’re the one just slightly closer so you get a bit of a read. in the England team is playing partner partnerships. So Jimmy Anderson and I would be a pairing and then we’d get drawn against maybe the opening batters or Zack Crawley and Ollie Pope uh Ruth or Stokesy and you play pairs match play for the day. So you have a bit of a competitive edge. Um but also me playing with Jimmy allowed me to to speak about the next day. Oh, what you think of conditions? How you feeling? How’s the how’s the how the legs? Um, if that batter starts doing this, should we do that? Not saying you spend 18 holes doing that, but at least you connect connect to it. Um, so yeah, we uh we’d always play pairs match play. Um, and maybe have a little individual stable foot uh if conditions suited. But also for me, the thing about golf, you’re in the fresh air, come rain or shine, you’re you’re in greenery, generally brilliant scenery. Um, you’re moving, you know, sometimes I’ll I’ll play, get home, and my eyew watch will say I’ve done like 13 14,000 steps. It’s just feels like a freebie, you know what I mean? It’s like to go and do that just walking for fitness wise, you’re um you have to really put in a lot of effort. So, it just feels like a bit of a I’ve always been someone who likes to exercise with a skill. Um, and I think golf naturally suits that. Which who? I’m here. What the What’s the ruling there? Do I get a drop this way? So, well, I think if it’s interfering, is it interfering? Listen. Yeah, you can take a drop. That’s fine. I think I would think officially you probably don’t. I get a drop like there. Yeah. That mud’s still on it. We need to get on that green. This is where if it was just chipping. Well, if it was just me, I would chip. But the camera’s putting you off. Well, this you’ve been banging on about Dan Greavves now for a week. I blam me. I should do, shouldn’t I? Clearly, I am going to chip. You can chip in. I don’t know about chipping in, but I am going to chip. What club are you chipping with? 60°. Are you? Yeah. Very professional. Is it me or you? Yeah. Go on then. Actually, I’ll wait and see what you do. I’m going to leave this just short, I think, is my gut feeling. Not deliberately, but sit, sit, slow, slow. I’m pretty happy with that. Yeah, I would think that’s pretty good. Sort of sort of distance you’re hoping he goes take it away, but it’s not happened. That’s was way outside of that. Oh, it’s got to run out. Yeah, if you’re looking for run out, would you not have used a well 50 or something? She have to go over anything. But these aren’t my greens. You see your your personal chipping coach off Instagram and YouTube would say that 60° only for an emergency, wouldn’t he? I don’t know. Would he? I think that’s one of his. I just didn’t I didn’t hit it far enough. So, this has really got to go in to put pressure on you. Your sort of range, isn’t it? Oh, get there. Good effort. for the wind. Yeah. Is that a six? Yeah. No way. Oh, I thought that would leak that way. That’s okay. Oh, silly, silly, silly. State of the game is all square coming down the last 18th hole. Quite a tricky one to navigate, actually. My honor, cuz dad won the first and I won the second. Yeah. Uh I never really know what to do. Um wind behind. I think it’s a sevenwood. Oh, I think it’s a sevenwood. And I’m thinking that only cuz I saw Justin Rose hit it really nicely. And along with the mini driver, it’s sort of a fashionable club at the minute, isn’t it? Sevenwood ball would be handy. As as I think he mentioned earlier, you know, up until a couple of years ago, he struggled to beat me. Um, not because of uh his abilities on the golf course, but between the ears. And I think the senior players have an advantage over the young players because there is that you know uh knowledge of how to play the golf course rather than playing the man. And I think that’s the secret to playing any sort of competition really. You play the golf course and if you play the golf course well then chances are you might win. You never ever play the man. I mean he’ll hit this miles. I’m not interested in that. I just want to get mine in play so I’ve got a shot to the green. Right. I want to go right edge right edge of that fairway. Right edge of that bunker is the plan. Oh, it’s actually all right there. Is it? Yeah, it’s okay if it lands soft. Oh, yeah. It’s bounced. Yeah, you you get a little gap through the trees. Okay. With a bit of luck. What you don’t do is take a safety club and then put it in the trees. That’s the most frustrating thing for getting out defending. Getting out defending. No, definitely golf. taking a safety club and put it in the trees. But also when a new batter comes in and you go for the stumps they hit for four, that hurts as well. Oh, has he gone a little bit right there? Sit, sit, sit. Oh, might you might have to bit of sevy hands. Oh, I see. Well, that’s probably not the so most social we’ve been cuz I’m going left and you’re going right. Yeah. See you on the green for two hopefully. Well, that would be nice. I think when I lose it left like that, I just I’m putting it there, you know. I felt I felt as though I didn’t follow through on that one. Yeah. I think both of us just tried to like nerdle it onto the fairway. I agree. I agree. Get it down the middle. Last hole. Get it down the middle. And of course, that’s a non-committal shot. Oh, blime me. You’re a long way up there. Yeah, it Do you know what? It’s probably not even a sevenwood for me, is it’s probably a could do a four iron or a or a five iron. You could go for the green with a 3wood there, couldn’t you? Potentially. But you I mean, you’re in a way better spot. Yeah. that doesn’t necessarily mean a great deal. Now, remember here, uh, long is no good. You’re you’re fine if you’re even just short edge, but if you go if you run through the green, it’s hard. Oh, strike. Look at this. Very, very good. What was that? Eighton. That eight iron’s caused me some trouble today. That eight iron has caused you a bit of trouble. Thought with it being my shirt number, you’d ease up on that eight iron. I used to love the number eight. Now I hate it. Yeah. I think when leaving cricket, having played professionally for nearly 20 years, chatting to different people that have left professional sport, it’s that competitive spirit that that’s quite hard to replace. So, um, you know, I’ve not necessarily missed leaving a big change room full of people. I’ve got young kids and family, but finding that little thing in the stomach that brings a real like edge to to the competitive spirit comes in sport and golf gives me that. I try I’ve tried I didn’t really have time when I was playing professional cricket a huge amount, but I try and play in stroke play competitions now. So, you know, I’ve got 4 foot putts that have to go in or or if there’s out of bounds all down the right, I can’t just get my driver, close my eyes, and whack it. So, it just brings a bit of thought and spirit into to what I’m doing. And that’s that’s definitely helped me. Look at that for a lie. Did you come and move and put that there? What do I do with that? Listen, there’s plenty of fairway out there. Yeah, this is normally an okay little spot, but I can’t I don’t think I can. It’s going to have to be a wind behind. I can’t get over. You can. You reckon? Sand wedge. That won’t you get a sand wedge up and over that? Could try. You don’t think it’s a little Get it if I go low and over that little hill. Well, which is the shot that you’re more capable of? Oh, neither. Do you think a s you think a sandwich is getting up and over there? Absolutely. Wow. I’ll watch the ball. You watch. You watch where you’re hitting it. It’s a lie. That’s going to be a bit awkward here. Well, just hit down on it like a almost like a sand wedge like like in you’re in the bunker. It’s taking go. I mean, it was a horrible shot, but it worked. That’s what I was looking to do. But you hit there and the ball was up here. Yeah. Is that not bounce? I hear about bounce on YouTube. Is that not bounce? That’s sand. That’s in the bunker. But But do you know like you used to say to me when I was a kid, what’s it say in the score book? Well, yeah. No, that’s true. If you’re out, you’re out. Yeah, it if it’s via a tree or not, it’s on the green. Correct. And I’m putting for the game. Also, if we edit out the actual shot and it just looks the position I was in and then I end up there, then it looks really good, doesn’t it? This is what golf’s about, though, isn’t it? We’ve both got a putt for birdie. One of them goes in, you win the game. Both them go in, you half it, but yeah, it’s me to putt first, I think. Out or in? Um, I’d like it in actually, please. Very Matt Fitzpatrick of you. Is it slightly downhill? I think it is. This would be a very dad thing to do to put this in. No, I’ve underdone it. Sit down. Well, you can put a marker on that. I will do [Music] Your last words were, “Well, it’s downhill.” Yeah. Anyway, stop focusing on that. I would class that as a nice run. Yeah, you can say that. Just friendly. very solid and the right result. Well done. Thanks, mate. Good fun. Enjoyed it. Good fun. A lot of fun. So, officially that’s all square. It is. We have the option of playing a playoff hole, but I think we’ll go have a cup of tea, shall we?

  1. What a wonderful video. It captured the great fun of golf with a friendly competitive edge. Stuart should be so proud of his sin as possibly his father was of him. I wonder if Tommy Fleetwood's "be a good person first" was a mark of the Broad family? A video that all those interested in understanding what golf is actually all about, should watch.

  2. brilliant vid ❤ . My son , who is now 30 , started playing a year ago and i had the pleasure of witnessing his 1st ever birdie . Something that is special when playing golf with your son . ❤

  3. I loved playing golf with my father.. he has passed away a while now.. and it just doesn't feel the same.. so enjoy your time with your dad.. Stuart..you obviously have great love for each other x

  4. That was good. I had stopped watching golf videos. However, as this was two cricketers I thought that I would watch. Still going to avoid golf videos though.
