In this episode of The Golf Podcast, we’re discussing the pivotal moment LIV Golf faces as three legendary names — Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson, and Ian Poulter — sit on the brink of relegation, potentially marking a massive shake-up for the Majesticks team and the league as a whole. We break down LIV’s performance-based “lock,” “open,” and “drop” zones, the recent tightening of relegation rules, and how these changes are designed to strengthen LIV’s case for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points by eliminating past loopholes, such as captains or “business case” exemptions. We revisit past cases like Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer, examine why OWGR remains crucial for LIV’s long-term viability, and explore whether aging stars will grind through the promotions event or simply retire with their sizable earnings. The discussion also touches on the business implications for team sponsorships, the challenges of sustaining the league with legacy names, and the pathways — or lack thereof — for players to return once relegated, especially with PGA Tour bans still in place. With big money, player legacies, and LIV’s competitive credibility all on the line, we consider what’s at stake not only for these players’ careers but also for the league’s future direction and its ability to attract new talent.

  1. Huge LV fan here: safe for Henrik those two other fellas should never have been on the LIV and have been the foundation of the argument that the live tour is just Golf theater. They have never been competitive and had not been for years. They’ve done an even worse job of marketing their team and done nothing to rejuvenate it. Best thing that could ever happen is all three of them are pushed out and some young competitive English players are replacing them. And then Liv needs to come up with a much bigger global strategy, which includes promotions and relations. It surprises me how they have not thought this through. The live tour is awesome, but it doesn’t go anywhere and it needs to and by that I mean, how does a player make the team realistically. Once a year one spot for one player is ridiculous. Come on LID get better. The global world of golf is counting on you and right now you’re playing small ball.

  2. You keep these guys because the other leagues suck and will never let a LIV player back in espically the PGA run by that self righteous ass Monaghan f..k him bty the PGa tour is boring and sucks without these L

  3. The older guys like Stenson and Poulter and Westwood got their fat cash signing at the back end of their career.. Stenson even lost a Ryder Cup captaincy. Money talks. I really hope LIV sticks with relegating captains..this limited field thing giveth and it should taketh away. Not just turn them all into announcers and hosts and cheerleaders to keep making the $. If Poulter suddenly feels like he can't afford shoes, he can try and qualify for DP World Tour yeah?

  4. LIV is not as easy as ppl think. Some, not all, took the money, but some, the rookies, just wanted another experience. As for the guys that took the money, they have no guarantee they have permanent stay in the league. Can you say "drop zone"? Phil can move because he got a boatload of money to play for LIV. Ian Poulter turning 50 can just join the Champions Tour. Simple.

  5. WTF, relegation means they don't qualify to meet the minimal standards to compete, NOTHING TO DISCUSS, they are out!!; They are
$ Millionaires, so cut the Boo Hoo B S

  6. Maybe LIV should do a tournament including the relagateed players for a change to get back in the empty spots?

  7. Just as a disclaimer, I’m not going to watch this video, but you got to click and you got the comment. It’s only a matter of a very short time before there will only be less than a handful of true elite players in this “league“ can’t compete with PGA. It’s kind of a exhibition type format funny names of funny teams with a funny format maybe targeting Europeans primarily I guess with the whole fun team names, PGA Tour weather the storm tookyour best shot and will definitely continue to dominate
