BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WSBT) — It’s an exciting new chapter at Harbor Shores Golf Course.

The course known by champions and golfing enthusiasts is now offering a new course for the next generation of golfers.

A grand opening took place on Monday afternoon for the Wee Golf Course, and local youth golfers got to see if it’s up to par!

This course was designed to be a place for the community to come together.

It’s bigger than just new greens and tee boxes.

The goal of this course is to grow the game and be a spot where everyone can come to play regardless of skill level.

Making golf accessible and affordable for everyone is the goal of Harbor Shores’ new Wee Golf Course.

The idea came from Scotland.

“If you have ever traveled or golfed in Scotland, the home of golf, you know almost every village has some type of little golf course and you see everyone there,” said Jeff Fettig, Whirlpool Corporation Retired Chairman & CEO.

The new short pitching and putt course is designed by Hall of Fame golfer and KitchenAid Senior PGA champion Colin Montgomerie who created it with all players in mind.

“It’s definitely more that it was designed for affordability and accessibility to everybody and every player. Whether you play golf or not, you could come out here you can putt around. You can play nine holes with a putter, or you can play nine holes with a wedge or other clubs in your bag,” said Josh Doxtator, Harbor Shores Golf Course PGA General Manager.

The five-acre, nine-hole course can be played in under an hour, making it ideal for children, those who may not be able to play a full nine-hole course, or those who don’t have the time.

The course measures 275 to 500 yards and consists of short yardage holes from 20 to up to 80 yards.

There’s also a 15,000 square foot putting green.

The course is a combination of two sets of tee markers.

Blue features more angles and challenging pitch shots, while white is for shorter pitch shots.

One unique feature of this course is the green on hole 7.

It’s a mini version of the green on hole 10 at Harbor Shores where Jack Nicklaus made one of his wildest putts ever.

The course has been showcasing its mission already with youth golfers facing off for the ‘Wee Course Exhibition Cup.’

“I’m excited. I’ve been excited ever since they told us about it and I’m just excited to play it,” said Gage Heddle & Duke Doxtator, Harbor Shores PGA Jr. League players.

Preview play will open this Labor Day weekend.

Pricing starts at $30 for nine holes, $40 for 18 holes, and $50 for all day access.

Kids under 12 with an adult are free.
