LIV Golf highlights: Phil Mickelson vs Jon Rahm in Michigan
Highlights from Jon Rahm’s 2-and-1 win over Phil Mickelson in semifinals of LIV Golf Team Championship Michigan at Saint John’s, Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025.
Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton outdueld Bryson DeChambeau and Paul Casey on the second playoff hole to win the LIV Golf Michigan Team Championship for Legion XIII.
Their teammates, Caleb Surratt and Tom McKibbin, cheered them on after the team tied Crushers GC following 18 holes of stroke play Sunday, Aug. 24, at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth Township.
Hatton’s clutch birdie on No. 18 in regulation tied the score at a combined 20 under par, and both Rahm and DeChambeau birdied No. 18 to force extra holes after spiny wedge shots after nearly driving the green on the short par-4.
Both Hatton and DeChambeau made birdie on the first extra hole, and Hatton and Rahm both birdied it the second time, after Casey’s long putt just missed and DeChambeau’s chip was wide from the rough short of the pin.
“Tyrrell and I got it going a little late, but better late than never,” Rahm said afterward. “When it came to the playoff, I felt fairly confident we’re both really good wedge players, and if we just put it in the fairway, I was fairly confident we were going to give ourselves a lot of chances.
“To just get it done like that, knowing I hit it close enough and not really have to stress about it, it’s a wonderful feeling. It’s been a long year. I’m happy I finally won a playoff, and I couldn’t be prouder of all of them. They played unbelievable.”
Rahm won the season-long LIV individual title last week in Indianapolis despite not winning any of the league’s 13 events.
As captain, Rahm had his choice of playing partner for the final foursome in the playoff. He chose Hatton, who shot 4-under-par 66 and finished with four straight birdies beginning on the short par-4 17th hole. Rahm shot 65.
DeChambeau had the best round of the day with eight birdies for a 62. Casey shot a steady 65, with just one bogey.
The final was played as stroke play with three teams, Crusher, Legion XIII and Stinger, in the championship bracket.
Each player on the winning team received $1.4 million of the $50 million purse. The runners-up earned $800,000 each. Stinger players each earned $600,000.
LIV has announced nine events for its 2026 season schedule, and Michigan could get a second look next year.
