Meet Connor, one of my online Skillest subscribers and an elite ball striker who’s had a ton of coaching over the years. Despite all that work, he still struggled with sequencing his downswing.
He tried squatting, holding the hands up and turning for as long as possible but nothing worked.
The real issue? His lead knee was collapsing in during the backswing. That caused him to feel stuck at the start of the downswing, leading to blocks and hooks.
So we worked on keeping the lead knee more in front during the backswing, no collapsing across. That small change allowed him to start the downswing with a proper shift, get his femur and knee in a stronger position and finally push out of the ground to rotate properly.
The result? Tight push draws and some of the best ball striking he’s ever had.
🔥 If you’re struggling with sequencing or feeling stuck, this might be your fix.

if you’re struggling to rotate and sequence your downswing correctly then you’re going to want to watch this so meet connor who’s a high level golfer who came to me for online coaching struggling with blocks and hooks saying he’s had a lot of instruction but he just can’t sequence his down swing you can see i draw a dot around his knee at setup and in the back swing his knee would collapse in as a byproduct it would then get trapped on the way down the feur will point inwards now he can’t sequence his down synquetly or rotate so the first thing we did was go “right the knees only work forwards and backwards.” the reason that the knee turns in is because of hip rotation we don’t want to manually do it so with that in mind his cue was to feel like his knee stays over the inside part of his lead foot now obviously there’s still a little bit of rotation as we can see here but nowhere near as much this now allows the knee to lead on the way down getting the femur into a better position so now he can push out of the ground and create rotation it was a small adjustment but it’s transformed this swing

Often with better players, changes like this show up in small, more subtle ways. But the concept applies to everyone, regardless of your level.

Wow your coaching eye it amazing to spot this
Is there a long version video?
Funny I struggled with exactly the same thing today
Thank you for the quick clear instruction without making it a 10-15 min video
You’re the best
I was doing the same thing along with going too far with my back swing. Instructor pointed these out a few months ago and improved my swing tremendously.
Being a senior golfer I was told to lift the front heel up and move the front knee towards the back leg a couple inches to get more rotation.
What about keeping the back facing the target before rotating? You should mention that.
Good lesson!!TY
Exactly what I’m working on currently. I moved the ball back a bit too.
I think you have just helped me!
I hit the ball well, get round about 90 but just have random hooks and blocks.
Cannot wait to focus on that
thats exactly what happens to me, but my knee collapsing leads me to a reverse pivot. which is impossible to get back in transition from.. are there any other feels to help with this?
Mike Austin knees only work backwards and forwards
🤯 My local pro and his instruction couldn't figure it out. I have been having this exact issue. Over the last two years I have gone from a 5 to 9 hcp. My ball flight also went way to high. My God I dip my hnee in. Not much but it for sure dips in. This will be a fix I will incorporate.
Rory’s is the best
Wow, that makes so much sense and I suspect will be a great help to me. 👌
Why can Jack Nicklaus do it then?
I wish everything could be explained this easily. I honestly never knew this so I’m excited to hit the range and try.
Very good point. Don't do it manually
It seems that this is for a golfer who is very flexible. When i turn my lead knee does go out and in.
During the backswing, what should the feel be for the trail knee/foot?
Yeah no great players ever kicked there knee in
I gotta try this asap my swing occasionally get pulls and hooks
Hmm. I am having a terrible time where I feel like my sequencing is off especially with driver. Lots of blocks and hooks. And I tend to get up on my left toe to try to get more turn. Will give this a try.
This was very helpful. I am totally new and I could not figure out how to rotate and what my feet should be doing.
