How to Start Playing Golf | Easy Beginner Steps & No Equipment Needed

Coach Shayain. I don’t know
where to start in golf. I don’t know what to do. Where do I go? I get all of you in my dms, a lot of text messages from dear
friends and just strangers reaching out, asking how or where do I start in golf? If you have received this
personal link from me now, I don’t need to text it
or voice note it to you. You can just watch this full video
on how and where to start in golf. So let’s get started. Welcome back to my YouTube
channel. I am coach Shayain. I am outside. So the first place you can start is
in your front yard, in your backyard, or inside your house. I’m just doing it
out here because the great summer’s day. But if you’re watching this in the winter, if it’s raining outside like
it always is in Vancouver, then you would want to be inside your
house. All of these drills that I’m going to teach you, you can do in or outside your
house with no golf clubs. You don’t need any golf clubs to start. That is the beauty of today’s video. I’ll give you three tips on the
golf swing on how you get started. I’ll tell you what the next steps are
after you’ve kind of figured things out in your house because you’re
feeling comfortable and
confident now to reach out to somebody and try actually
the real sport itself, which requires you to be outside. A quick pause from the video
you’re currently watching, I just want to let you know if you have
not downloaded my free golf starter guide, you need to go and do
that @ www.CoachShayain.com. The link is also below. It will really help you out if you’re
brand new to the sport. That’s number one. If you haven’t joined my golf
travel wait list for 2026, I guarantee you, you will not want to miss out on these
amazing destinations that we are going to in 2026. And videos are going
to come out for me in Spain, Greece, Italy, and Japan. So if you want to know what golf
looks like in any of those countries, you want to join that mail list for 2026. And if you have any questions,
as always, I always tell you, get in the comments, ask me,
and if you add me on Instagram, you can DM me your question
as well. Thanks so much. Let’s get back to your regular program. Let me tell you tip number
one, spatula my favorite thing. Go grab it from your house or
if you’re already in the house, you can grab a spatula, a spoon,
a chopstick. It does not matter. Any of those would be good
enough for you if you’re outside, if you see a wooden
stick around, grab that. So the first thing that we’re going
to do is I am going to show you how to hold your golf club. If
you’re a right-handed golfer, wave your left hand to cut the camera
or to your TV screen or wherever you’re watching me, and put your
thumb down the middle, right hand wave thumb down
the middle. So if you look, both my thumbs are down the middle.
All my fingers are together. A lot of you like to hold the golf
club with your fingers attached. I want all of them in a straight
line and I want your thumbs down the middle.
Super simple. Don’t complicate it. This is your golf grip. So
either way, left hand, thumb, down the middle, right hand thumb
down the middle. There it is. That is your tip. Number one,
the golf grip. Tip number two, what happens in your takeaway? Okay, so you can see that my hands
and my spatula, a k, a, my golf club is making the letter
Y. Okay, so both of my hands, spatula, letter y in golf, we don’t want to be very
active with our wrists. When you are putting in the
takeaway of your golf swing, you are here and you’re
just moving the letter Y. See how my letter Y is moving without
me doing anything crazy with my wrist? So you’re breathing,
you have your letter Y, you’re doing a little shimmy with
your shoulders because you’re nice and relaxed. You’re not tensed and
holding it tight. You’re relaxed, you’re doing the letter Y and
you’re just going back and forth. And if you look at your toes,
try to think right toe, left toe, right toe, left toe,
okay. If you can do this, this is perfect. A good bonus tip to get
really good at this. Grab a chair, grab a wall, grab
anything that’s solid that’s not moving. Just like I have this chair, I’m going to have my left hip
almost like attached to this chair. I’m doing my letter y, I’m making sure my hips
aren’t going sideways at all, which is very, very common. You’re new, you’re going to have very active hips, but I want you to think only
hands. I’m only thinking hands. I’m going left toe, right
toe, left toe, right toe. Almost like activating your
abs. You’re right here. Okay, I want to do a little longer putt.
I’m going to go outside right toes, outside left toes. But did you
see how I didn’t lift anything up? I didn’t move my hips as I was doing that. I’m very strong and solid
and still with my lower body, I’m relaxing my hands. I
have my grip toe to toe, toe to toe, toe to toe.
You’re only moving shoulders. I hope you can see that
now an extension of that same putting stroke. But in
your swing, in your golf swing, what you’re going to do is you’re going
to take this toe to toe and you’re going to make it longer. So I
will now take the letter Y. I will bring it towards my
hip, in front of my hip, so not behind me, in front of my hip. And I’m going to pretend that my
spatula is an extension of my hand. So if I was to shake somebody’s
hand, hello stranger, I would shake their hand like this.
I wouldn’t shake their hand. You don’t shake someone’s
hand like this or like that. So your hands and your
spatula are an extension. You’re doing a handshake.
I’m still looking at my ball. I’m going to hit the golf ball and
I’m going to do a reverse handshake, same concept as I was shaking
someone’s hand. So I’m here, I’m shaking somebody’s hand, I’m hitting the golf ball and
I’m doing a reverse handshake, making sure this chair
is attached to my hip. So I’m here and you can see my hip
and the chair are still touching each other as I do a handshake. The most common mistake in
the backswing with all of you beginner golfers, is can you see the difference?
We’re here. Look at my hips. I’m no longer touching the chair. You have to make sure your
hips do not go sideways. And if you watch my other videos,
I talk about the salsa girl, you don’t want your hips to go sideways.
So you’re here, you’re just thinking hands. Hit the golf ball and then take
it to the next level and reverse handshake. That’s your second
hot tip with your chair, making sure we’re still
using chair Tip number three. That was a very extended long tip.
So you are going from putting, I’ve given you the handshake.
So let me now tell you, when do you use your hips and how do
you generate the power and golf that everybody wants to generate?
Same chair, same hip. What are we going to do? I have
my spatula. Take a little fist, give yourself a little bit of a fist
distance from the chair and now you’re going to upgrade your swing. So maybe this takes you a
couple of weeks to get used to, but keep adding onto it.
I still have my grip. I’ve done my handshake. Now I need to turn my hips, twist my hips, not sway to wear my back faces my target or my chair. So watch again.
I’m here, done my handshake. I’m going to twist so
my body weight is here. I’m going to hit the golf ball and then
I’m going to do the reverse with my body weight on my left foot. What this does is this
little twist helps you from swaying. Watch this again. I didn’t move my look how far
my hips are from the chair. So you’re one fist apart or another
great way to do this to really see what you are doing is move
the chair. If you have a chair, if you don’t have a
chair, and this is a wall, you would just do the same exercise this
way with the wall being here and have your hip or your fist, your
right hand, right to the chair, okay? Right hip, right hand to
the chair and what you’re doing, you’re going to come forward. You need
some space for your hands, my back swing, right? And now I need to twist this so my back faces the target. I’m
here. Then my handshake, and now I’m going to try and twist
and not have my hip touch the chair. I’m going to show you again. I’m here. I’m moving this right butt cheek back. So I’m here. Then I’m
going to hit the ball, going to do a reverse handshake
and bring my hands up to my ear. I hope that helps you. Hot tips
your grip, keeping the letter y, keeping it straight in your backswing.
So make sure you’re not back here. Otherwise, you’re going to hit your chair. You need to come in front of your
chair so you can feel your handshake. You have to stop in front of your hips,
not behind you in front of your hips. And the second movement that we’re
doing is we’re twisting. Twisting. This will take you some time to get
used to where you’re activating your abs and you’re twisting, hitting, and then following through all of this
in your house, front yard, backyard. I have so many more tips like this. You can actually join my at-home
Golf Tips by Coach Shayain, which I have tips that I’ve put in there
for days and days and days that help you get really, really granular
in the golf swing. Again, all in your house, if
it’s winter, if it’s cold, if you just don’t want
to go to the golf course, you don’t have time to go to the course. Little things that you can do in
your house to get much better at the sport itself, it doesn’t
require you to go anywhere. Eventually you will have to hit golf
balls and you will have to show up on a course or a driving range to actually
put all of this to practice. All right, so those were your hot tips in the house.
The two other things to get you going, you need to find a golf
coach. How do you do that? I’m going to put both
the links below LPGA, golf coaches and PGA golf coaches. All you do is you put your zip code
in there, go in the description below. I’ll have both the links. So
let’s not complicate this. You just put your postcode
or your zip code in there, and then you’ll have a list of
ladies with the LPGA that’ll show up. Or if there’s no ladies in your area, then you can go to the PGA
site and see who is there. Men or women that teach golf as well, email them, DM them on
social media, call them. Some of them have their phone numbers, and what you’re going to do is step
number three, you’re going to ask them, do you have group classes?
Group lessons are the best way to play and get into the sport. You get
to meet other people. Number one, you get to see that everyone sucks at
golf. If you come to any of my clinics, I let you know that everyone
is not very good at golf. So just show up, showing
up as the hardest thing. Just show up and then it’s going to be
easier on your pocketbook as well as they say. So it’s cheaper. Group classes are
anywhere between four to six people. Sometimes people do eight or 10
bigger groups, completely normal. But that’ll help get you going. You’ll meet people and it’ll be cheaper
for you to learn in a group setting. If you are the type of person
who’s like, no, I need one-on-one. I need to have just me and
the coach, sure, by all means, go for it. I’m a golf pro
myself. I get people coming, but I know the most effective ones are
usually the ones that come in a group or they bring a friend. Bringing
a friend holds you accountable, and you get to do two or three
or four classes together. So you are showing up instead of a one
and done class. You get to do two, three, or four how group packages work. And then every Tuesday at
7:00 PM or six o’clock, you show up and you do the class. So you learn different
skills every week and make sure in between your classes, you go to the driving range and you
practice what you are learning in your group class. Because what is the point of just
learning it once a week and not trying it yourself? So then you can report back to
your coach and be like, Coach Shayain, I tried your bump and run the other day, and guess what? My ball kept
going to the right or my wrist. I can’t figure out my wrist.
They’re too active. Whatever it is, whatever it’ll be, you can tell your coach and then they
can keep an eye on it when you are back for round two of your lessons. So I’ve given you hot tips in your
house without clubs, what you can do, how you find your golf coach. And
number three is group lessons. The benefits of it. Take a
friend, hold yourself accountable, and just try and have fun. The game
is hard. There’s a lot going on. There’s so many things to remember.
You can binge all my videos, but eventually you’ll have to
put it into practice. As always, I hope you’re going to
go into the comments. You’re going to ask me all your
questions that you need to ask, but if you have anything in
particular that you want, you can also set up a 15 minute call
with me. I do have a program called the Fundamentals Golf Program
where you have access to me, you have access to all of the
information that I provide, and then we get you going and success
in six weeks by doing the program. Every week we set you up for success, and then you can take
clients out to play with you. Thank you so much for watching. If you haven’t joined my
travel golf mailing list for 2026, make sure you that and keep your
eyes out. I’m headed to Greece, Italy, and Japan and Spain, and make sure you see that content
on what golf looks like overseas. Thank you so much for watching.
We’ll see you next time.
