In this video Guy Charnock reviews the Takomo 101 irons. Takomo are used by Grant Horvat, The Bryan Bros, Luke Kwon and many other golf creators. However, how do rhe stack up in the hands of an average golfer!

Tacomao Ions have taken the world of golf by storm, but what are they like in the hands of an everyday golfer? Today, we’re going to find out. [Music] Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of years, you will be aware of Tacomao Golf. They burst onto the scene a couple of years ago and it feels like every time you go on to any YouTube golf video or YouTube golf review, there’s people asking about Tacomao, Tacoma, Tacomao. And that’s for good reason. You’ve got players like Grant Horvat, you know, huge YouTube golf creators using Tacoma. I think he’s even a part owner of the brand now. You got the Brian Bros using them, Luke Quan, and obviously Rick gave them a glowing review on this channel as well. So, rightly so. Lots of people are asking about Tacomao. But my question was lots of these reviews like Rick and these great players obviously Grant Hovat Luke Quan etc. They are all great players. What are like in the hands of a more mere immortal like me? So I had a look through the catalog of Tacoma Ions and I saw these ones the Tacomao Iron 101 and these really caught my eye for a couple of reasons. The first one was how good they look. They look really really strong in the hand. Very classic in devi in design. very kind of sleek, but they’re also packed with technology, and they should go a long way. High launch and forgiving, so I had to test them. Okay, so we’re going to start with a seven iron. I’ve got a 4 iron, a 7 iron, and a wedge of this uh 101 iron series. And I’ve put the flag out quite far. Put the flag at 180 yards. My normal 7 iron would be about 170, but these are a stronger lofted iron. The loft of these irons is 30° for a 7 iron, so that is quite strong. But let’s have a look. First thing, behind the ball, they actually look nice. They are quite big. They’re quite thick in the in the top line, but behind the ball, they do look really, really clean. Let me hit this first one. This is seven iron, 180 carry. Let’s see if we can get it up there. Okay, a bit of a leaky one. Felt quite good. Missed the green. And that’s why I’m testing these golf clubs as a kind of more average golfer cuz I do miss green. Certainly with a 79 like that. Went a good distance though. Carry distance was up at 178. So pretty much exactly what I’d expect it to be. But missed the green. Right. Okay. Let’s say a couple more. Again, behind the ball is quite big, but I don’t mind that at the minute. That was a towy shot. That’ll be interesting to see what that does. That was very, very towy. Bit of a mishit. Going to make the green, I think. H that’s interesting. So, that’s two quite ropey opening shots there. But again, you will expect that with me. I’m a mid mid well, not a mid- handicap golfer. My handicap would be about nine, but certainly the way I’m going, it’s going worse and worse. No. Okay, Rick, pick it up. More of an average golfer for sure. These aren’t the irons. Really, speaking of average golfer, the Tacoma would probably push me into. They have a set called the 101T, which are essentially very similar to these, a little bit smaller. They would probably be the ones if I was choosing a set of Tacoma, I’d navigate towards based on what it says online. But I thought this would be a good test anyway. Again, this bigger head, it looks quite similar to a tailor made P790. But the big big difference between these and a P790 and why Tacoma is getting so much interest and so much love. These are pretty much a third of the price of a set of tailor made P790s. This set for pitching wedge will cost you £459. So like I said, they’re about a third of the price of Tailor Made. It makes it with this promotion of these people like a Grant Hallvat, you know, the Brian Rose, etc. using these clubs and the price point, it’s no wonder people are interested. And again, lookswise look very good. Feel off that first couple of shots was good, but obviously a couple of shots isn’t a full test. Let’s whack a few more. Slightly heavy. Not my best hit in the world, but I’d take it. I really would. [Music] That was a good hit. God, that was like a 183 I think. Carry. That was long. Okay, so a good test there. Hit a number of seven irons. few ones going to the right which is just obviously me. That’s user error. No surprise. That is my kind of favorite side to miss on. But so far I’m impressed about a couple of things really. First of all again the looks do look stunning. They look really really premium and feelwise they feel very very solid. I’m going to hold my hands up a little bit. I am a bit of a golf snob and I try not to be. I really do. But I’ve played golf since I was 8 years old. So 26 years or so now which is a long time. I’ve always used brands like Titus, Ping, a bit of Callaway here and there, Nike back in the day, you know, these kind of premium brands who charge a lot for their golf clubs. And honestly now, so far with that 7 iron, they feel as good and look as good as anything I’ve tested before. And they’re very forgiving, which again, this model is might not be the best iron for me. As I said, the 101T might be a bit more favored to me. Might try those in the future. But so far, that’s good. There’s two slight concerns I’ve got though. I have. The first one which I want to test more with the fore end the wedges. I hit a few there that came off very hot and seems to go very far which you don’t always want. I want to carry the green like 190 carry. It was a great strike but almost too far. And secondly was the golf course later on in this video because lots of higher handicapped golfers or mid- handicap golfers who would use these irons also like to chip with a seven iron, nine iron, pitching wedge, etc. What will these be like to actually chip with around the green? because they do feel quite springy and quite bouncy. I want to test that. But first up, let’s hit the pitching wedge. Green’s at 140. I’ve not really got any idea if this is going to be going too far or not far enough. I’d imagine if hit it well though, this might go even a bit further than 140. Behind the ball again, stunning. That looks super premium. Quite thick, very kind of confidence inspiring. But again, that’s what this set should be. Okay, let’s see what we can do. 140 carry to go. That was it. Nice fraction thin if I’m being picky, but really nice golf shot. Pretty much bang on at 135 carry. Can’t moan at that. Was a tad thin, so I think I get a bit more out of it, but nice opener. Another one. A bit thin, but again, that’s going to work for me. Be happy with that on the golf course. So, this pitching wedge is 44° of loft, which is quite strong. So, again, spin might be lower. However, they do launch it quite high. Okay, so those shots then weren’t full of backspin. Not horrendous at all, but not full of backspin because of launching so high and landing so steep did land quite quickly, which is a good thing. That was a bad hit. Very, very high out the face, but kind of made the front edge of the green. That’s the kind of shot there with these kind of irons is forgiving irons come into their own. Bad hit. No question about that. But it still went okay. I am impressed so far. I get four iron to come and those chips around the green which will be a real test. But so far I’m understanding the Tacomao hype. I really am. I’m liking them. [Music] So on the website for Tacomao they do say this iron is like 17 handicap or above to beginner which obviously and thankfully I’m better than that. But I think that statement is quite like quite categorized. I can understand people who might be a four five handicapper who want a bit more distance or can spray a little bit across the face some more using these. And for me so far, I mean if I would put them in the bag, but I certainly wouldn’t be good if I had to. I mean, that feels so good. And so far this pitching wedge, I think I’ve hit four shots. Haven’t missed the green yet, which I’d like to think I should never miss the green from that distance, but I do. Okay, let’s see if I hit a couple more and keep these getting onto the green cuz that would be really really impressive if I can. again. Another thin one. That was skinny, but just go. It’s on the green. Wow. Okay, two more. That was flushed. That was a lovely golf shot. Wow. Okay, last one with the wedge. This is I think this is the sixth shot or seventh shot. If this gets in the green, I haven’t missed the green once, so no pressure, but wow. Oh, flushed it. Although it could be a bit long. No, I think that’s good. That so far, I think I’m learning two things. The first thing is don’t be a brand snob cuz these feel very, very good so far. And second thing, maybe I have been playing irons for a long time, far too long now. I was too unforgiving cuz that felt so easy. That made golf in that instance feel easy. Okay. So, last iron for me in this set is the four iron, which looks again really nice. Quite sleek. Bit of kind of chunk in the uh the behind of the golf club here, which should give you some kind of Yeah, it does give you some confidence. The one thing to note as well with these long with these newer irons is that the lofts have got stronger. So, this 4 iron is 20.5°. When I grew up, my three iron was 21°. So, this is stronger than my old three iron. has four on the bottom, but really it’s like a three iron, which obviously lots of golfers struggle with as I do. So, this will be a nice test. I’m going to put the flag out to about 200 yards. Again, it might go more. It might go at 215. We might have to move that, but my guess is 200 yards to start with. Let’s see how we get on. Okay, I’m already doubting myself. I’d like to think this might go more than 200 yards if hit it well. So, that’s something to know. We might have to move the flag back. And secondly, don’t be surprised if some of these golf are right. That is my bad shot at the minute. I’m trying to fix it. But, let’s see. This is a forgiving four iron supposedly. So, let’s see. Oh, it wasn’t a great hit, but wow. Oh my. Wow. It’s gone through the green as I thought it might do. It’s gone well further. Gone 217. Dead straight. Bit towy. Let’s move the flag back to 215. Let’s try and stiff some with the four iron. Come on. Oh, there’s the towy one. That was so bad. Towi fat. But somehow it’s made the green. That is insane. That was a terrible golf shot. Absolutely horrendous golf shot. Now I’m off a mat. Bit more forgiving than turf obviously. Take that into account with a little bit little, you know, bit of salt. But wow. Okay. Right. Less talking, more hitting. Let’s hit some good shots. Oh wow. That was nailed. Got so long. This sounds stupid. You’re going to think I’m stupid in the comments. That’s gone too far. I absolutely flush that then. Ball speed of 141 dead straight. It’s finished up at 229 yards with 221 carry. As amazing as that sounds, that’s the only thing with these sets of irons that they are forgiving, which is great. When you do sometimes flush one, for whatever reason, they almost go too far. And if I was hitting four iron onto a very long par4 or something, I think that would have gone through the green. But wow, it felt good. [Music] That was dang it a little bit pushed. Another one that was honestly hit well but with a bit of a push which should in theory sometimes take a bit the distance off it. You’ve opened the face a bit but that actually carried at 220 and went out to 235. So just so so far which you know isn’t the worst thing in the world but these things come off hard. I’m going to hit one more and then give you some feedback on the full iron shots before the big test. Get onto the golf course doing some chipping with them. And that’s why I’m testing these as a more everyday golfer because that was awful. Missed the green by about 100 yards to the right. Okay, so so far so good. Look great, feel great, price is really affordable. Unbelievable. Numbers wise before. Again, there’s going to be a caveat to this I should say because this is going to be quite good, but I really want to take them on to the chipping green. I said before so many golfers, higher handicappers, mid- handicappers chip with a pitching wedge 79, etc. I need to test that. But pitching wedge carried at 136. Great. Seven iron carried it 179. Great. As I thought, stronger loft, higher launch. Perfect. Four iron went out to 212 yards. My dispersion rings are decent. There was some obviously missing target on the right. That’s down to me. That’s my bad shot. But overall, really good. Spin’s not too bad either for me anyway. The spin was kind of where expect to be about nearly 4,000 revs on the 4 iron, 6,000 on the 7 iron, 9,000 on the wedge. Not bad at all. Launching quite high. So overall for me I am starting to see what all the fuss is about. Let’s get to Chipping Green now before I give you my final thoughts. Here we are at Marriott Worthy Park from Chip and Runs. Got the seven I got the pitching wedge. Nice simple bumper on them with the 7. Let’s see how this performed. Did they come off too hot? Did they feel good or did they work? [Music] [Applause] Okay, that was a few. The seven I performed really well. Felt very nice. Those little simple bump and run shots were, you know, maybe you could put it, but for me, I prefer to chip. Pass with flying colors. I think I’m kind of repeating myself here because these Tacoma irons have really, really impressed me. I’m blown away. Going to hit a couple with the pitch wedge now and I’ll kind of wrap this up. But yeah, great irons. It’s certainly taught me to not be a brand snob. For a third of the price of Tailor-Made P790s, these are really, really good. See if I can just check these pitching wedge ones close. Not a bad little shot, but yeah, again, the feel is awesome. The looks are awesome. A lot cheaper than other brands. Definitely one to consider. That’ll be a nice way to finish the video. There we go.

  1. I am sick of the sight of Takomo irons…. They're pushed by every You-Tuber. Not saying they are good or not, just hate the sight of 'em.

  2. Im a 13 handicapper and i tried the 101s. Just didn’t really get on with them. Felt lovely when struck out the middle but didnt feel very forgiving, lost a lot of distance missing the middle. Cant fault their looks and price but ive went back to my taylormade rsi1s.

  3. I really do enjoy the videos with Guy every once in a while! He really is a very good and honest reviewer! It is nice for another handicap perspective! Keep it Up Guy!

  4. Wow Guy is not average he's great. As a 24 handicap, I feel I need to challenge Guy to a match in Canada as 1 he needs a vacation and 2 he needs a win

  5. I have just purchased a set of 101s, and so far I love them. I love the feel and quality, and they're very forgiving. You do get the odd hot one, just as in the videos, but I put that down to my bit of inconsistency of strike, so maybe it wasn't me. I can't say enough good things about them, especially the price. People have stopped me to have a look at them because they are direct to consumer, and it's not easy to get a look and feel of them. I found the online fitting tool very useful, and so far, I couldn't swap them.

  6. I wonder if Guy’s skill level might have been better matched to the 201. I’ve been doing a lot of AI comparisons, and the 201s are what is recommended for me(8.5 index).

  7. Guy would probably fit better into 101t at his level. I’ve been playing them 101t for 8 months and best irons I have ever hit, at any price. Coming from last set of callaway apex that i was fitted for

  8. Loving guys average golfer reviews. It’s good seeing non pros getting a platform to promote and show off clubs. Ps someone’s been hitting the gym. Boys got jacked.

  9. Just because you set the green at 215 and consistently hit it over it doesn’t mean they are coming off “hot” just means you should set the green at 225-230. You and Rick love talking about how balls come off “hot” when really it’s just the stronger loft that makes you consistently hit it further than what you “think” it should go.

  10. I've had some Takomo 101 irons in the bag for 3 years since i first found out about them (probably time for a change now i know) Such a forgiving club, gone from around a 18/20 handicap down to an 8 with no real effort to practice and improve just playing rounds. They do go an absolute mile though with the stronger lofts, totally agree with Guy, sometimes i find they get me in trouble from going too far.

  11. You been hitting arms guy? That Nike looking snug 😉 looking good, prefer you doing the club reviews as so many more golfers are nearer your level than Rick

  12. Guy you are only an "average golfer" when compared to the likes of Rick. An average golfer scores around 95 and doesn't hit a 7 iron 170 yards. Been hitting the gym I see so looking forward to see how it effects your game! Carry on mate.

  13. Love the reviews, am looking at upgrading this winter to get out of the Sims max-2. My game improved and looking for something less forgiving, Takoma will make the list with the kirklands

  14. Guy Charnock has leveled up his game. We are about the same handicap. Time for Rick to send you across the pond. How about a few matches in the Pacific Northwest?

  15. I almost think these lower lofted irons of today make your gapping bad and force you to add wedges that you wouldn’t ordinarily need. By the time you add your hybrids you’ve exceeded your club limit! I don’t need to think I can hit a 4 iron from 220?! The chances of me hitting it well enough to get there probably isn’t realistic. But I know distance is what everyone wants to boast about.
I remember when we first saw John Daly hit a 200 yard 5 iron and the announcers couldn’t believe their eyes

  16. Great review Guy, hopefully see you on some course vlogs with Rick as find them a bit one dimensional without you. I don’t understand making clubs stronger as you just need an extra wedge at the other end of the bag.

  17. While I love Rick’s reviews, Guy’s game is more similar to the average golfer which has a better representation of expectations on gear. Thanks Guy!!

  18. Great to see you, Guy.
Loved the review. Didn't lose much performance when they weren't flushed.
More of these needed me thinks.

  19. Why didnt you mention anything about the fact Takomo cant fit you for the irons? Clearly a vital part of buying gold clubs at any price point. I can never buy a set without a fitting because that would be crazy.

  20. I like the idea of them but the fitting is an online questionnaire. All the reviews on YouTube are for 101’s, I filled in the questionnaire and it told me I needed 301CB’s 🤷🏻‍♂️

  21. Little tip that i got from phil mic. On them bump and run shots u should hit it off the toe of the club because its a dead spot and it wont come off springy or too hot as it should act like a putter hitting it from the toe
