I take on the LONGEST golf course in the world (insane challenge)
Today we take on a 20,000yard course and trace the footsteps of one of this game’s legends. We are going to be walking through history. We are going to be taking on the Hagen 54. So standing here on the coast of Kent in England and it is home to three of the best links courses in the world. We have Prince’s Golf Club, we have Royal St. George’s Golf Club and then a little bit further down we have Royal St. Ports. Now in 1920, Walter Hagen, absolute legend of the game, was playing in the open championship at Royal Sync Port all the way down there. Now him and Jim Barnes, another legendary figure of the game, played 11 holes at Royal Stink Ports and then had a look over the fence and thought, “Oh my word, what is that over there? Could that be Prtel, another golf course?” And they hopped over the fence onto Royal St. George’s and carried on playing. And then when they got to the back end of Royal St. Georges, they saw princes hopped over the fence and came to play here as well. And it was at that point that they reached here, the end of princes, the end of the golf course. They turn around and then they went back completing a 54hole loop of these three magnificent courses. Now, to help you understand where we’re at on the golf course, because it’s a shotgun start and we’re starting at Roll St George’s, we have made an interactive map. So let’s have a look at that and let’s have a look at some of the goals that we are chasing during this epic video. We’re actually going to be scoring these 54 holes in stableford. So we are looking for 100 points or more for a gold medal. That works out at eight over 90 to 100 points for silver and 80 to 90 for a bronze medal. Anything less than that and we get nothing. I’m hoping to hit 40 out of 54 greens in regulation. And in each of the three courses, we’ve picked out historic scores. So at Roll Stports, Walter Hagen had a 74 in the 1920 Open. At Roll St George’s, Walter Hagen had a 72 in 1922 where he won. And here at Prince’s, Jean Saren shot a 69 in 1932 where he went on to win his open. But we’ve added in a twist. I’ve decided it would be a good idea to make it really, really, really difficult for myself. And we got a lovely surprise which is in keeping with the 1920 open. The key is I’ve just got to build up a big solid score before I hit princes because if I don’t I’m in trouble. I’m in trouble. I’m in trouble. And the sunes. Oh, I was told I was cing for you. When Walter Hagen played at the Open Championship in 1920 over at St. Paul, this was still a time where many professionals were not allowed inside golf clubouses. It was seen as uncou. So what Walter Hagen did when he was barred entry to the clubhouse is hire a massive car, put it in the car park and use it as a mobile changing room, stocking it with everything a professional golfer could need. He was also a showman and whilst he was feasting and preparing for the open championship with caviar and champagne. I’m preparing with Hule. So, we got Princes there, Royal St. George’s, and then Royal St. Paul’s. And I’ve always like literally looked over the fence here and been like, “Oh, I was desperate to play. It has such history and obviously an amazing pedigree.” But if I’m going to be completely honest with you, it’s just stuff like this, like a little storm shell. Look, it’s got a little hat on. Oh, wow. Yeah, look at those three bunkers. Jeez, there’s something to get over them. And what was the pin? Sorry. 148. We got a bank on the left. So it’s left to right. It’s left of the pin’s kind of favored. Okay. Bunker. Bunker. Anytime that ball disappears around here, I think we’ve got a a relatively good guess at where it’s ended up. Bunker. I’m like swinging with just freedom, not thinking about anything technically. The way the golf should be played, you know, it’s good to be back in touch with the roots of the game. It’s one of the best things about coming to courses like this. They have such history and draws back so many memories. I was playing in a junior open at Morham Golf Club. I remember it pretty vividly and it was on the Sunday of the Open at Roy St. George’s where Thomas Bejorn it was it was his tournament. It was his major to win and then he had his John Vandervel moment where on this green he left it in the bunker to the right hand side. He didn’t get it out rolled back to his feet and he ended up losing to Ben Curtis and we all came in after the junior comp and all the dads were watching it. This was back in the day. Your manly pits of mild, six of them then drive home and they were all watching the golf and oh yeah, Ben Curtis looks like he’s going to win. They were all like Ben Curtis. He was like Ben Curtis and then like the next or the previous was Todd Hamilton. There a bit of a weird run of opens and then the last time I was played here calling him more a cow one and then before that Darren Clark. Good chat to Darren at the open actually. He was on good form. Lives in the Bahamas now. Yeah. Yeah. just got to the just got to like the top of that slope there and just rolled all the way back. Now Mike is going to show us how it’s done. I think it’s what do we say it was like 11 or 12 till 18 and then we loop back around and do the the rest of rolling ports. Then we’re back over Royal St. George’s then over to Princes. Man, Mick, I want this map to be so clear. So, the pins over, you look at the the mound over there, that flat flat top mound. Yeah. Pins just behind that generally play down to the towards the red, white, and blue sign. Yeah. And you got 250 before you run out of fairway. Right. Okay. Yeah, that’s good. I’m kind of digging this. No practice swing in five. How was your round today? Not bad. Two and a half hours. So, that’s your underpin. Amazing. And now onto literally one of my favorite courses in the world, Royal St. Ports. So what Walter Hagen did is he started at S ports and he jumped fences. Now because with the order we’re doing it in because of the shot and start, we’re not jumping the fence to S ports. We’re jumping in a cab and we’re doing it the modern way. And you know what? Um, now this is the 12th on Sing Ports with the 48th hole overall. You can tell we switch over from the red to the blue. Now, the last time I played Sing Ports, I caught Fuego.
