guys welcome back to the teaching Channel today we are going to talk about the perfect takeaway now the word perfect is often frowned upon in the golf world but there is definitely a takeaway out there that will set you up for success and we’re going to talk about that today now Jack Nicholas one of the greatest golfers of all time talked about the first couple seconds of your takeaway being the most important part of your golf swing this will set you up for the rest of your golf swing when you guys see a lot of interesting positions at the top a lot of it starts with where you take the club halfway back a lot of people are in here so they do this to recover or if they’re out here they might lay it off a lot of different moves in the golf swing but I want to talk about how to set up for the perfect takeaway so we’re going to talk about three points today on the perfect takeaway but what I see with a lot of golfers is what I want to talk about first when you go to a driving range and you see somebody that’s slicing it you’re going to see most of the time in their takeaway is that club is going to go inside here and your brain’s very very smart so it’s going to recover so the next move when you take that club inside is going to be to recover and come over the top and you’re going to see that Big Slice so a lot of the times you see somebody hit and they’re new to golf they go like that so that club’s working inside and then it’s coming over and left and that’s how they’re hitting these big slices so right off the bat you can see in the golf swing a slice or these terrible golf shots they actually start a lot of the time with the Takeaway on the flip side I don’t want to see this as well where you’re losing the connection here and you’re lifting that club straight outside because then it’s going to be hard to recover to get it to the inside but if you’re going to favor one of them outside is always going to be better than whipping that club inside and open let’s move on now to the perfect takeaway and what that looks like when I’m over this golf ball here there’s three checkpoints in the perfect takeaway first one is I want that club head to just be slightly outside my hands so this is where I want this club to be halfway back this would be considered inside this would be considered too far outside I want this club just outside my hands so this would be inside my hands this would be too far outside this is just slightly outside my hands so that is checkpoint number one the club heads slightly outside your hands checkpoint number two what I’m looking for is where that club face is this would be considered shut this would be considered open so a lot of golfers when they take that club back it’s going to go open it’s going to go inside and open now when they’re open at the top to square it once again they’re coming left hard it’s going to create that Big Slice so so if you can get this takeaway good to this position now I want my toe pointing slightly up but that angle of the club face should match my spine angle if I’m right here over the ball this is my spine angle and I take it back see the angle of my club face that should match the angle of my spine so it shouldn’t be like this my spine is not you know parallel to the ground or my spine’s not like this so I want that club face to match the angle of my spine checkpoint one Club heads slightly outside your hands hands are still nice and close to your body Club head just outside checkpoint two I’m looking at the club face where that is I want that just that toe slightly on an angle and now moving on to checkpoint three in the takeaway one thing I like to feel this is more of a personal feeling so this is not going to apply to everybody we kind of checkpoint one and two are basically where the club should be fundamentally just outside the hands matching up with the spine angle that’s a perfect position halfway back checkpoint 3 is more of a personal one for me I like to feel when I’m going back in my gol swing that the club is staying very low to the ground and outside my hands so low and slow that is going to be checkpoint number three low and slow what I see a lot of golfers do is they pick it up and stand up and out of their shot out of their posture this causes a lot of issues so if you keep it low to the ground and slow it keeps you in your spine angle in your posture it’s a very good feeling to have that is a personal one we’re going to hit a couple shots here and we’re going to go over those checkpoints right now I’m going to hit hit two 3-woods one four iron really working on the takeaway this is something that I actually work on all the time on the Range so when I’m hitting balls on the Range I’m looking for where that club is halfway back because this sets me up for the rest of my golf swing so another thing I want to touch on is just how smart your brain is in the golf swing especially when it comes to the takeaway so when I see golfers taking it outside a lot of them are going to reroute it to the inside because your brain wants to get it back to the plane but when I see golfers going inside like we talked about they’re going to come over the top so your brain is going to react a lot of the time to the first couple seconds that you’re golfing so if you get it good here and you’re on plane you’re perfect most of the time the club’s going to go up and be in a good position here and you’re going to be able to come down in a really solid position so let’s hit a three-wood here and let’s go over those checkpoints I’m going to hit a shot I’m going to hit two 3-woods and maybe a four iron we’re on a te here at a beautiful Golf Course here in Florida the cape Club of Palm City and we’re going to hit a shot focusing on those points those checkpoints so checkpoint number one that club head is going to be slightly outside my hands here my hands are staying nice and close to my body they’re not pushing away they’re staying nice and close to my body hands in close Club head out checkpoint number two I’m looking at my club face what the angle is of my club face so that is a square Club face this would be shut this would be open and then from there when I’m ready to hit this shot I’m going to feel low and slow low and slow and that should get me in that perfect takeaway position h a shot here low and slow keep that club head outside my hands right there boom well for the first swing of the day that’s as good as I can hit a golf shot if you guys have ever noticed Ricky Fowler or Justin Thomas if you want to put a put up a video Skyler on the screen of Ricky Fowler or Justin Thomas do their pre-shot routine if you guys are watching the PJ tour and you see Justin Thomas over his shot he loves to do this before he goes off he sets the club right here where he wants it from there then he makes his golf swing you’ll see him do that on the Range he’ll lit he’ll literally get over the ball stop here make sure it’s good and then go because he knows in his brain and so does Ricky they both do it they know if they can get that club in the perfect position to start their swing they’re going to have a really good chance of hitting a good golf shot let’s try another one here that was about as good as I can hit it and that this is something that I work on so it’s nice when I’m on video here with you guys working on things along the way and this is helping me out as well so I’m always working on my takeaway that is such an important part of the golf swing let’s do the same thing get over the ball we got our checkpoints low and slow stop there make sure we’re good checkpoint good now feel it low and slow right there money oh my gosh that is just good so I can hit a golf shot I got to feel that more often that is that was a great feeling now let’s move on to an iron here I want to see if you guys can even get a better understanding with looking at an iron Club head versus a 3-wood just to have another visual for you guys so this is a four iron I would normally not hit a 4 iron off this T but still never a bad play this this golf course is really tight same thing here with an iron let’s go over the checkpoints one more time the three points on how to create the perfect takeaway let’s get over it got an iron so hands in club out so hands are staying close to the body the club head’s slightly outside my hands here the club head this is shut this is open this is square it’s matching the angle of my spine and now low and slow to get to that position low and slow to get to that here we go let’s hit a 4 iron here low and slow it’s my swing thought right there good money well I could probably stand out here all day and maybe not hit three golf shots that good I don’t know what just happened I haven’t really swung all day I’m super tight but we somehow just found the middle of the club face all three times that could be because my takeaway was in a really good position and it set me up for a good golf shop but huge shout out to Aros for being a presenting sponsor of the teaching Channel go in the link in the description click on that link and 1. i work on a golf course and i see 200 people a day on our rang . and i hardly ever see people swing over the top like this guy is saying at the beging of this video , grip it and rip it people ……

  2. I just subscribed to your channel because I believe that you have the best video content on YouTube! I love your swing and would love to see more teaching videos. I can't seem to hit my irons very well. It's driving me crazy!!!

  3. must try it right away when I am back on the range, thanks grant.
I would be also interested in how to let the club head do the work and generate the most ballspeed like a whiplash. I one time had 109 club head speed with an iron 7 fooling around with different techniques but never was able to recreate it… instead I am most of the time trying to grab harder and rotate even faster ending up with chicken wings and bringing the ball to a full-stop right at impact.

  4. Another amateur giving golf lessons YouTube🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄Tiger woods quote “ you want to improve your game, don’t take lesson from YouTube amateur 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  5. Great video, Grant. I would love for you to talk about the transition in the downswing and how to discuss feels to help coordinate upper and lower body separation. I am either too fast or too slow and hit push right or pull draws. How do I fix that?

  6. Why do some coaches say take if you take the club back slow you will tend to rush your downswing and with a slow backswing everything doesn’t arrive at the top at the same time. I just a little confused 😕

  7. going to try this! everyone always comments about how i dip my head like crazy on the back swing and then have to basically jump up in the down swing to hit the ball. currently a 15 hcp playing like that by some miracle of god. Going to be getting some Takomo 101T irons here i think and fitted for a new 3 wood so cant wait to work on my game!

  8. Very good teacher man. I’m a PGA Golf Instructor and your teaching is amazing. I’m definitely going to send this video to my students. Thank you.

  9. This might be an easier mindset for the beginner. Just think to point your left shoulder at the ball. That mindset allows for a one piece take away.

  10. Love the way your putting it across in simple terms that I can understand, most of the time I get lost in all the terminology used.

  11. Grant, following your swing mechanics from this video, I went out today 04/24/2025, I shot my best round in 6 months. I found for myself, taking my hands closer to my body and keeping the hands inside of the club worked best for me. The swing in general felt so much better. Can’t wait to get back on the course! Thanks so much😃

  12. "Low and slow". Can there be a better swing thought than that? Checking the club position in the pre-shot routine is also a "no-brainer". I try to almost take a screen shot in my pea brain to remember where the club has to be; it's non-negotiable. Then the rest of the swing (usually) takes care of itself. Great video, great teaching style.

  13. Who would take advice from this skeleton dudes just a YouTuber. It would be like taking advice from Biden about soccer

  14. Hey Grant, GREAT video!!! I am hitting my driver rather consistently and straight, but only hitting it 200-225 yards. Any tips for some extra distance?

  15. Yo we need a top down camera angle, from your point of view. That would be game changer for us visual learners. Thanks for the vids

  16. Thanks, Grant. Other points to cover could include 1) right elbow position at the top of the backswing 2) wrist action 3) body/hips turn
Straightening the right leg in the backswing helped me to go inside to out more with straighter hits with all clubs.

  17. Great video. I hit straight left a lot. Maybe my grip is too strong. But you hear strong is long so I like to make sure my left hand is strong. I think the problem for me is at impact. My hand is probably too released which in turn, turns the club head left versus keeping it squared. It would be nice to see you explain how to stay square through impact. Especially without over compensating and leaving the face open.

  18. I just started golfing, and while I have a small advantage of natural athleticism/fluidity, I'm a terrible slicer. I'm talking 80% of my shots are hard slices. I watched this video last night, let it marinate in my head and slept on it. Went to the range today and completely flipped the script. 80% of my shots were straight down the middle with minimal lateral movement. Unreal just how effectively simple and simply effective this guy and his knowledge is. Unreal.

  19. Hip high is easy to do. The continuation to top of swing is where we all go wrong that hardly anyone explains properly.
