In this episode of Paddy’s Golf Tips, Padraig explains the importance of having rhythm in the golf swing. Good rhythm allows the player to hit the ball hard, whilst swinging smoothly. Harrington emphasizes the significance of being relaxed at the top of the backswing and utilising a barely imperceptible pause, before turning on the power. He provides a couple of drills to help create rhythm, involving a stepping drill as well as counting during the swing, which is also useful when playing under pressure.

Rhythm in the Golf Swing : Key Tips for Swinging Smoothly with Power | Padraig Harrington
https://www.youtube.com/padraigharringtonofficial
We’re more talking about the ability at the top not to snatch, not to rush, to have a barely imperceptible pause. So, it’s not a freezer. It’s not getting up there and stopping. It’s getting up there and nearly like letting that there’s a moment where you’re just nice and relaxed before you turn on the power. Winner of the gold medal and the champion golfer of the year is Podrick Harrington. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Welcome back to Patty’s Golf Tips. We’re going to talk about rhythm in the golf swing. Okay. Now, it’s poss it’s possible to have good rhythm and hit the golf ball hard. In actual fact, the best golfers look like they’re swinging smooth and are swinging hard. And that’s because they’ve got great rhythm and great coordination. So here’s a few tricks we want to get going for your your rhythm. Okay. So essentially we want a nice rhythm over the ball. So we don’t want to be stuck over the ball. So if you’re going to have nice rhythm, you’ll find that you move as you’re prepping to hit it. So that’s the natural way if you’re going to take something away. It’s very hard if you get static over the ball to take the club away nice with a nice smooth look to it. Nice rhythm. So, first of all, we’ve nice rhythm. Now, outside of that, we want to get to the top of the swing reasonably relaxed, especially at the top. So, when you want to have nice rhythm, you want to feel like you have time at the top of your back swing. You want to be relaxed at the top of your back swing. You know, as I said, for a lot of weekend golfers, I’m not adverse to you getting to the top of the back swing and actually having letting go of the club in that sense that you that’s how relaxed you are. your hands are like this because that’s going to stop you and then we want to put the power on. So nice and relaxed at the top of the swing with all your muscles your left hand side nice and relaxed. A great way of getting to do this and not rush this is to count through your swing. This is very good under pressure as well. So as you’re over the ball, a great way of doing this is you can go one, two, you can count it down to the ball three. It goes very quick in the down swing. So a lot of people might go one, two to the top of the back swing. So simply one, two, and off you go. So the key thing here when we’re working on rhythm, there’s no point in working on your rhythm, unless you can play at that speed on the golf course. So if we if if it causes you to have to really slow your golf swing down in terms of of ball speed and club head speed, it’s not really worth it. Some people have a fast rhythm and that’s okay. So, I’m not advocating in anybody here. If you take the club back fast, it’s usually more powerful. If it suits you, that’s great. And again, counting can do that. Very hard to count the one down. I I see VJ over there. VJ was a one, two. So, one, two, 17. He counted 17 was he felt was the right pace of his down swing. I’m going to try that. See what that’s like. Okay. It’s very hard to count out loud, by the way. It’s much easier to count it in your head, but I’m going to try. Okay. One, two, 17. Okay. Maybe I should use that this week. Anyway, that’s a great way of getting your rhythm. One, two, and it’s harder to count it in the down swing, but definitely you can count in your back swing, but I don’t want you to decelerate. So, it’s more of relax and go. So, you can still hit the ball hard. You don’t have to hit it easy. You can be smooth, but very hard. So, again, nice rhythm count through. You can see you have to move to start off. Very same rhythm that this if I was doing a step drill, you’ll see it’s very same. So, one, two, three. Three was very late, but it is harder to count out loud. It takes longer. So, the step drill again produces that rhythm. One, two, three. Very nice. If anything, I would say the club is a little late for me there. And that’s why I’m getting the push draws because of the fact I’m taking longer up here. It’s going to set the club a little bit shallower on the way down and get that. The more you go out ahead of it, the more the club is going to get in behind you. I know a lot of people like that. It’s not my greatest. Certainly, I don’t want to be doing that. Uh, as I said earlier, you should pull as hard as you can on the club, on the grip. If you don’t slice the ball, you should be pulling as hard as you can, getting your hands to move as quick as you can at the start of the down. Clearly, if you slice the ball, you need to be getting the club out to the right to start off with before we start putting the the speed onto it. Again, nice bit of rhythm. I really like the step. I’m going to hit a cut this time. So, Like so. Stepping is going to add that timing and rhythm. It makes you take more time. But the key if you want speed at the top, you know, you want to put that power on is we don’t want to kind of snatch halfway back. We want to get to the top and relax. One, two, and then put the power on like so. Again, nice balance does help with the look of good rhythm. And that’s really what there is to rhythm. You should be able to count through it. It’s good under pressure. And uh your step drill is going to help with that rhythm. Hitting shots in a row is going to help with that rhythm. But certainly a lot of players have used it to manage pressure over the years. Just one, two, and go. Nice and relaxed at the top. And that’s all there is to it. Would love to hear your thoughts on John Novosel's work on Tour Tempo. As always thanks Paddy and best of luck!
I've always been a big fan of yours Mr. Harrington Sir. And then getting tips from you! Especially after your big Win! I can only say Thank you! And God Bless 😉!
It made me chuckle at 1.00 where you say "the best golfers look like…" That would be you then Padraig! Congratulations on the Senior Open win. We are so lucky to have you taking time out to try to get us to improve.
Congrats on the open and thanks for the videos. Could you do a video on practice games? I can play 9 holes on my own 2 or 3 times a week. Is there any games or variations that you would recommend instead of simply playing the same 9 holes the same way every time? This is really a question about different types of practice. Thank you again
It’s not something I do,enough but I know what you mean Paddy. It’s the feeling of being ready for the down swing
Absolute legend. Still blows my mind I have you as my teacher
When you say hit it hard, exactly what do you mean? I am right handed and if I swing hard I hit a pull. My coach says to much right hand. I can't hit it hard with my left hand. Thanks
For me to find tempo, I take an 8 iron or PW and hit it 50% its stock distance. Hit about 30-50 of these per week. I don't ever try to swing very hard to hit my clubs 50% of their distances. Also, I struggle letting my right elbow drop into my body, before my right shoulder turns forward and thru the ball. My body wants to turn the shoulders so fast. I feel like rhythm to the slot position (club parallel to ground), then turn as hard and as fast as you can into that left hip.
I count off like dancing steps… "and 1, and 2"
The 1st "and" is the trigger, and the second "and" is the transition/pause at the top. This gives a dance rhythm to your swing
Congratulations new senior golfer of the year!
The champ is here!
Love this guy !! Golf needs more like him …
Congratulations Padraig, the last few weeks have shown you're a legend ❤️🇮🇪
@padraigharrington
Congratulations on your 2nd Senior Major this year. Very impressive!!
thats why i think its huge to learn how to shift pressure to the lead side, it gives you that imperceptible pause and time
Love you paddy, grats on the tournament win. Please reduce the volume of the intro clip, it's several dbs above every other audio in the video. Shouldn't be too hard and I promise at least some % of people click off when they hear how loud it is.
Great tips from a true Legend of the game.
Padraig I love your videos and trust you fully. Would you consider making a video on the most beneficial gym exercises for the golfswing?
Perhaps a lesson on ways to overcome putting yips.
Thx
Congratulations Paddy. Great will at Senior open. Love all your Gold tips. Thay do work. Regards. Mick Hutchinson 🏌️♂️
You explain golf well – thank you
Thanks and congratulations Padraig!
Instead of counting I always say “Ernie” on the back swing (2 syllables) and “Ells” on the down swing (1 syllable) and because I say his name I naturally also have in my mind a picture of his swing while I’m swinging
What’s Riddum ?
Congrats on your senior open victory. Thank you for your assistance in my humble golf game.
