On the very first hole back at Eaton Canyon Golf Course after the Los Angeles fires, my tee shot on the par 4 left me with 140 yards in. I took my 8-iron over a tree toward the green, but Jon and I never saw it bounce or heard it hit anything. We couldn’t find the ball — classic lost ball scenario.

To keep pace of play and show respect for the group behind us, I dropped near the tree, hit my next shot, and one-putted for bogey with a penalty. But the question is: should I have gone back to the original spot and hit again for a proper distance-and-stroke penalty?

This moment is part of my latest golf course vlog on YouTube — Eaton Canyon: Back On Course. We explore how the course is recovering post-wildfire, share honest hole-by-hole golf commentary, and highlight moments like this one that every golfer can relate to.

I definitely pulled it a little bit left. Yeah, I definitely have had balls get stuck in these trees. But I didn’t see it ricochet. I didn’t see it come up or out. I never saw it come down either, but I thought it I thought it was behind the trunk. Whatever. We’re going to drop. Take our penalty uphill. Left or right in. That’s a nice putt. Yeah, good boy.
