Former Rutgers golfer Chris Gotterup won the Scottish Open last Sunday by holding off star veteran Rory McIlroy to secure the win. He had a score of -15 over the course of four rounds and was able to secure the win by two shots. It was the second PGA Tour win for Gotterup.

His score of 61 on Friday turned out to be a course record. McIlroy would tie things back up heading into the final round, where Gotterup shot 66 to secure the victory.

His first ever PGA Tour win came in the Myrtle Beach Classic back in 2024, two years after he went pro in 2022. Now he has his first win over a notable opponent this year.

During his time at Rutgers, Gotterup was a four-time All-American for the Scarlet Knights. He decided to transfer during his junior year of college, landing at Oklahoma. He won the Haskins Award and Jack Nicklaus Award as the nation’s top collegiate golfer during his one year with the Sooners.

With the win, Gotterup automatically qualified for the championship at the British Open next week. It will be the third major appearance for Gotterup.

After the win, Rutgers Golf Head Coach Rob Shutte praised Gotterup for his accomplishments.

“We are unbelievably proud of Chris. This is a monumental accomplishment and a testament to his hard work, talent, and belief in himself. Watching him compete and succeed at the highest level is inspiring for our entire program and the Rutgers community. He’s always represented us with pride, and now the world is seeing what we’ve known all along.”

Gotterup’s success is starting to put the Golf world on notice.

“Golf has a new up-and-comer,” CBS announcer Jim Nantz said on the national broadcast. “You may not have recognized the name at the beginning of the week, but you’re never going to forget it now.”

His recent success suggests that this is the beginning of a very successful career for the Rutgers alum.
