BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Alex Caruso Foundation will hold its third annual golf tournament Sept. 21 at Traditions Club at A&M, according to Caruso, a College Station native, former Texas A&M basketball player and two-time NBA champion.<\/p>\n

Foundation\u2019s mission<\/p>\n
Caruso said he started the foundation to give back to the community where he grew up.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always saw professional athletes, they\u2019d have a foundation or a charity or something that they put their name to and it was just a vessel for them to give back to the community. And I told myself, if I ever had the opportunity to do that, I would do it,\u201d Caruso said.<\/p>\n
Caruso said the foundation is entering its third year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now going into year three of this foundation, the Alex Caruso Foundation, really just starting to kind of click and figure out the best way to serve the community,\u201d Caruso said. \u201cMixing in some things that obviously I like to enjoy in my free time, which is golf, specifically for this golf tournament coming up in a week, along with a couple other things. But really the big purpose was to just try to pour into the community that I grew up in that was able to help me flourish and reach some of the goals that I had as a kid that maybe I didn\u2019t think was possible at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ties to the Boys and Girls Clubs<\/p>\n
Caruso grew up attending the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Brazos Valley and recently visited to make a donation.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of my time was spent playing in the summer basketball leagues. I had various coaches, met a lot of people that I\u2019m still friends with today and playing those summers,\u201d Caruso said.<\/p>\n
Caruso said the organization provides resources beyond athletics.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey just do a great job of providing kids with what they need. For me, it was some organized, structured basketball league, some coaching, some people that were maybe more mentors than anything than coaches,\u201d Caruso said. \u201cThere\u2019s other programs that the Boys and Girls Club facilitates for kids, whether they need help with homework or figuring out how to apply for college, taking the steps that it takes to get to that point, or if they just need somebody to talk to and kind of decompress after a long day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caruso said the organization\u2019s mission aligns with his foundation\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s one of the organizations that I think it goes a long way and its mission is kind of aligned with the mission of the foundation, which is just pouring into kids and helping them maybe realize some dreams that they think they can accomplish and lay out step by step, maybe a process to help them get there,\u201d Caruso said.<\/p>\n
What to expect at the tournament<\/p>\n
Caruso described the format and schedule for the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of fun. It turns into a quick day because there\u2019s kind of a lot packed into it, but it starts early in the morning. You\u2019ll show up for breakfast. I take pictures with each of the teams. You get a little goodie bag with the foundation polo, some golf balls, some other golf items thrown in there,\u201d Caruso said. \u201cQuick warm-up, I have a couple opening remarks and then we play golf.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caruso said the tournament is a scramble format played in foursomes.<\/p>\n
\u201cPut some music on, you and three of your best friends or somebody from work or in the community. Go out and have a good time. Try to shoot as low score as you can. It\u2019s a scramble. So, you know, varying golf skill through the whole tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caruso said the event concludes with awards and lunch.<\/p>\n
