Framed by striking lava fields and red rock landscapes in the arid desert of southern Utah, the Black Desert Resort was the last golf course that Weiskopf was associated with before his death. The stunning layout was completed in 2023 by Weiskopf’s design partner, Phil Smith.

Sitting at 3,100 feet of elevation, it’s a par-71 desert track that doesn’t play as long as its scorecard yardage. It’s an easy-scoring resort course with generous fairways, minimal rough and large greens. Though fairways average 48 yards wide, errant drives can be particularly costly because of the exposed lava rock surrounding the playing corridors.

RELATED: The Passion of Jason Kelce: The retired football star invests time and money into golf his own way

This will be the third edition of this tournament, and Michael Brennan is back to defend his 2025 title. He shot 22-under par, including a final-round 66, and finished four strokes ahead of Rico Hoey for his first PGA Tour victory. He led the field in strokes gained/off the tee, ranking second in driving distance. Outside of Brennan, Maverick McNealy is the only other player inside the top 50 of the world rankings.

Here are my favorite plays and fades in each price range for DraftKings contests for the 2026 Bank of Utah Championship.

    $9,000+ range

    Play: Marco Penge, $9,400

After struggling through illness earlier in the year, Penge has turned his season around with five top-20 finishes in his past eight starts, including a T-6 at the British Masters and a T-10 in his last start at the Biltmore Championship. The expansive fairways and minimal rough at Black Desert Resort play right into Penge’s strength off the tee. His biggest improvement over this hot stretch has been with his irons, where he has gained strokes in six of the starts.

    Fade: Matt McCarty, $9,000

The 2024 champion of the inaugural Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort, McCarty has struggled throughout much of 2026. He has not recorded a top 25 since May and has finished T-50 or worse in eight of his past 11 starts, losing strokes off the tee in each of those tournaments.

    $8,000+ range

    Play: Harry Hall, $8,900

After a rough patch during the summer where he lost strokes ball-striking in eight of his nine starts, similar to Penge, Hall also seems to have righted the ship. He’s finished inside the top 30 in four of his past five starts, including two top-5s. When using the Rabbit Hole to filter rounds played in easy scoring conditions with weak fields, over the past three years Hall ranks as the third-best player in this field, gaining an average of 1.46 strokes per round.

Sign up for the industry’s leading data tool to make golf stats easy to decipher—head to BetspertsGolf.com now and get access to The Rabbit Hole for only $10 for your first month. I would much rather be overweight on others in this range including Hall, Johnny Keefer and Jordan Smith.

RELATED: Cabot Revelstoke is golf’s next great mountain course—and we got a first look

    $7,000+ range

    Play: Max Greyserman, $7,900

Greyserman is an excellent fit for Black Desert, where his length off the tee along with his consistency on the greens offer some intriguing upside in this range. He also grades out well in a number of relevant tournament splits over the past three years, including ranking first in the field during the fall swing, fourth in easy-scoring birdie fests and eighth in weak-field events.

    $6,000+ range

    Play: Andrew Putnam, $6,600

There are definitely not any easy clicks in the $6K range this week. It’s situations like this that the Rabbit Hole’s modeling feature comes in handy. I combined the same three tournament splits mentioned above—easy scoring, weak fields, fall swing—and combined them with recent form to build a “mini-model.” Putnam scored as the top $6K player and ranked 32nd overall. While a conservative choice due to his lack of upside, Putnam offers a high floor and is a safe bet to make the cut this week with potential for a higher finish if his approach game can find its baseline.

RELATED: NBC reporter’s question to Scottie Scheffler was completely fair.
