The 101th U.S. Open Championship 終盤に入り優位にたったのは、最終組の2つ前を行くM.ブルックスと最終組のR.グーセン（南アフリカ）、S.シンク。この3人の中では唯一ブルックスが1996年の全米プロゴルフ選手権でメジャーに勝っている。そのブルックスが、落ち着いたプレーで最終18番を5アンダーで迎えた。しかし、2オンに成功したものの、3パットのボギーで4アンダーにしてしまった。 最終組は17番でシンクがバーディを奪い5アンダーのグーセンに並び、最終18番に入った。両者ティショットはフェアウェイに放ったが、シンクの打った第2打はグリーン奥のラフへ。対するグーセンはピン横3メートルにオン。シンクのアプローチは弱く、距離のあるパーパットは惜しくも外れた。そして「お先に」という感じで打った50センチ程度のボギーパットも外し3位に後退してしまった。
