Bob Rotella never has to guess what time it is.<\/p>\n
Rory McIlroy made sure of that with a handsome Rolex, for helping him win the 2025 Masters, a feat he repeated this spring\u2014one of only four back-to-back champions\u2014with Rotella\u2019s help once again.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s one of the fantastic memorabilia pieces Rotella has assembled, working with many of America\u2019s most celebrated athletes as a pioneering sports psychologist.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got a whole basement full of pictures and flags signed to me from a lot of the major golf champions that are pretty cool,\u201d the Charlottesville, Va. resident said. \u201cThey pretty much decorate the room downstairs where players stay when they come for two days. It makes for a very motivating and interesting experience, that\u2019s for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guests can\u2019t help being inspired when they see how many luminaries he\u2019s helped in just about every major sport, from NBA legend LeBron James to baseball Hall of Famers Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr.<\/p>\n
As a kid growing up in Rutland, Vermont during the 1950s and early \u201960s, Rotella played baseball with an Ernie Banks model fielder\u2019s glove. So one of his favorite items is an autographed color photo of \u201cMr. Cub\u201d with the inscription: \u201cTo Doc, Keep going, Ernie Banks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other prized pieces are rings from the 2018 Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the 2012 NCAA basketball champion Kentucky Wildcats, along with an autographed basketball from his good friend, Coach John Calipari.<\/p>\n
Calipari also gave Rotella a beautiful framed, color photo of the jam-packed Superdome in New Orleans where Kentucky beat Kansas. A small plaque within the piece shows the final score: Kentucky 67, Kansas 59.<\/p>\n

Rotella\u2019s boyhood heroes were the sports stars at nearby Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland, where he later excelled as a three-sport athlete himself.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom the time I was in fifth grade, I was either rebounding basketballs or shagging baseballs or footballs,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a kid, even when I was 20-something, my dream was to coach basketball at Mt. St. Joseph. Life took me in another direction, but I would have been happy as heck doing that. I always loved coaching.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of his most rewarding experiences during college was teaching basketball and swimming at a nearby school for special needs students.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose kids probably had the best attitudes of anyone I\u2019ve ever met,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cThey had 99 out of 100 things going wrong in their lives and they spent all day talking about the one thing going good, which was swimming lessons from a local athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n
While pursuing his doctorate at UConn, Rotella was a highly successful defensive lacrosse coach for the Huskies, which led to a job at the University of Virginia, where he first started teaching performance psychology and launched a doctoral program in that field. One of his star pupils was future NBA great, 7-foot-4 center Ralph Sampson, a three-time NCAA National Player of the Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sports psychology was still in its infancy, but Rotella\u2019s work, reputation and proven results quickly spread and after 20 years at UVA he stepped out on his own to consult with a host of world-famous athletes.<\/p>\n
Before long, he had an impressive collection of memorabilia\u2014gifts from clients in appreciation for his help.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver time I\u2019ve just kind of accumulated it,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cI\u2019ve run out of wall space. If it\u2019s not on the wall or sitting on the floor leaning against it, people probably don\u2019t see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
MEMORABILIA HIGHLIGHTS<\/p>\n
So what are some highlights?<\/p>\n
One is a framed color photo of former George Mason University basketball coach Jim Larranaga cutting down the net after a big win en route to the 2006 Final Four. He signed it: \u201cBob, We couldn\u2019t have reached the Final Four without your help.\u201d<\/p>\n
A separate framed piece displays a variety of newspaper and magazine clippings and photos including a\u00a0Sports Illustrated\u00a0cover (March 27, 2006) that shows George Mason star Lamar Butler with the headline, \u201cSweet Surprises.\u201d<\/p>\n
A framed poster from the 2019 Virginia national champion basketball team is signed by Coach Tony Bennett and reads: \u201cBob, Thanks for always believing in me and our team. You played a big part in us winning it all! Blessings to you!\u201d<\/p>\n
Future NBA star and current Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle was co-captain of UVA\u2019s 1984 Final Four team. Rotella played a major role in his development by teaching him how to overcome life\u2019s setbacks.\u00a0So it\u2019s no surprise that one of Rotella\u2019s favorite collectibles is a color photo of Carlisle kissing the NBA championship trophy he won as head coach of the 2011 Dallas Mavericks. An inscription reads: \u201cDoc, Many thanks for 30 years of friendship and guidance. You and your family are very special!!\u201d<\/p>\n
Rotella also has a Greg Maddux Chicago Cubs jersey and a framed photo of himself with San Francisco 49ers three-time Super Bowl champion coach Bill Walsh.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Celebrities from the music and entertainment industry are clients, too.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve worked with a lot of singers,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cJohn Rzeznik, lead singer with the Goo Goo Dolls, came here and brought a couple of his albums.\u201d<\/p>\n
There\u2019s also a handsome framed piece with a color photo of Rzeznik performing and discs from the Grammy Award-winning band\u2019s multi-platinum award album, \u201cDizzy Up the Girl,\u201d which sold more than 4 million copies in the U.S. alone.<\/p>\n
But most of Rotella\u2019s collectibles are related to golf, a life-long passion of his, which began as a young boy caddying for four-time British Open champion Bobby Locke at Rutland Country Club. In 1978, Rotella\u2019s speech on sports psychology at Madison Square Garden caught the attention of an attendee from\u00a0Golf Digest, which was starting an instructional school and wanted someone to teach the mental aspects of the game.<\/p>\n
That led to Rotella\u2019s work with PGA Tour players.<\/p>\n
Without question, the greatest golf photo of all time shows Ben Hogan hitting a rare 1-iron onto the green of the 18th\u00a0hole on the final day of the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania. The iconic scene shows fans crowding either side of the fairway, and the great Hogan in perfect follow-through in his first tournament back after a near-fatal car crash.<\/p>\n
His four-stroke win in an 18-hole playoff has gone down in golf history as the \u201cMiracle at Merion.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of people have a black-and-white of that photo,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cIn 1989, I spent a whole day with Ben at Shady Oaks in Fort Worth. He gave me a good-sized color poster of that shot, not just a photo, and signed it to me, which is pretty cool. That\u2019s one of my most prized possessions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another personal favorite is a photo of his mom and dad, huge Celtics fans, playing golf on their 50th\u00a0anniversary with the great John Havlicek and eight-time PGA Tour winner Brad Faxon.<\/p>\n
An autographed color photo of Rotella with Jack Nicklaus says, \u201cTo Bob, Keep the kids thinking straight. Good Luck. Jack Nicklaus.\u201d<\/p>\n
PGA Championship (2008) and two-time British Open winner (2007, 2008) Padraig Harrington, a World Golf Hall of Famer, gave him a replica of the prestigious Claret Jug, the trophy presented to each year\u2019s British Open winner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s pretty special,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cIt\u2019s in the box that it comes in from The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another handsome framed piece has a picture of 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman wearing the green jacket and waving to the crowd, accompanied by a yellow pin flag with the note: \u201cDear Bob, This victory would not have been possible without your support and advice. Thank you so much. Your friend, Trevor Immelman.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I\u2019ve got some really nice posters from the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National, signed by U.S. and European captains Davis Love and Darren Clarke,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cThere\u2019s also a great picture of myself with Tom Kite and [revered golf instructor] Harvey Penick who wrote the \u2018Little Red Book.\u2019 He taught Tom and Ben Crenshaw.\u201d<\/p>\n
But no golfer\u2019s library, from McIlroy to casual weekend warriors, would be complete without Rotella\u2019s 15 books on the subject with titles such as, \u201cThe Golfer\u2019s Mind,\u201d \u201cYour 15th\u00a0Club,\u201d and his first work, \u201cGolf is Not a Game of Perfect,\u201d whose lessons proved invaluable to McIlroy at last year\u2019s Masters.<\/p>\n
Clinging to a slim lead, his 18th\u00a0hole tee shot on Sunday missed the fairway and wound up in pine straw. His second shot landed in a bunker, but a precise blast from the sand came to rest within 12 feet of the cup. Two putts later, McIlroy secured a one-shot victory over runner-up Scottie Scheffler.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s why we worked so much on accepting the fact that you\u2019re going to miss a lot of shots no matter how good you are,\u201d Rotella said. \u201cThat\u2019s a big, big part of it. As my first book says, it\u2019s not a game of perfect. It\u2019s a game of mistakes and scoring despite your mistakes. Rory told me that he grew up reading that book.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rotella spends considerable time with McIlroy in the weeks leading up to an event, \u201ccoming up with a good plan about what we\u2019re going to do with our mind, attitude and strategy.\u201d Right before, he sends a detailed text message with reminders that McIlroy can read at any time.<\/p>\n
\u201cEach day, based on what happened the day before, we might modify something or make some slight adjustments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Recently, a package for Rotella arrived in the mail, a huge black-and-white poster of McIlroy, showing him on his knees after winning the 2025 Masters with a large, cheering crowd in the background.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s beautiful,\u201d Rotella said.<\/p>\n
And as long as he keeps working, even more incredible collectibles will keep coming his way from athletes whose dreams might not have been realized without his unfailing help, dedication and support.<\/p>\n
Harrington perhaps summed up best what Rotella\u2019s influence can mean to those who work hard at practicing his lessons.<\/p>\n
