Shane Lowry has seemingly shrugged off any criticism he received for a controversial comment he made before winning the Irish Open.<\/p>\n

On day three at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, he was heard saying a volunteer ‘deserved to get hit’ on the 18th hole.<\/p>\n

Lowry smashed his tee shot towards the left and it flew towards a group of volunteers who were stood in the rough.<\/p>\n

His remark, picked up by a hot mic on the course, was the subject of criticism later that night as he ended the day top of the leaderboard.<\/p>\n

The 39-year-old then hit a seven-under 63 on the final day to win his second Irish Open title with a final score of -23.<\/p>\n

Lowry attended his post-victory press conference and addressed his choice of words from earlier in the weekend.<\/p>\n

“It’s funny, right, because marshals obviously have a very tough job and they are volunteers, but they get a little bit in the way at times, I feel like,” Lowry said via the Irish Examiner.<\/p>\n

“And 18 was just two guys going across the fairway as I’m trying to hit the shot and it’s playing really hard. <\/p>\n

“There’s another guy walking\u2026 but any ways, you have to do a little bit yourself. But it was carnage out there. I did get a little bit\u2026 <\/p>\n

“The 18 tee shot for me, I practiced on Monday. I hit a tee shot 50 yards left out-of-bounds and for the rest of the week that’s all I could think about on that tee. It was quite an anxious tee box for me. <\/p>\n

“And even today, I had a ten-shot lead, and I was like, I just can’t wait to get this tee shot over and done with.”<\/p>\n

Irish Open celebrations in the pub<\/p>\n

Lowry, who first won the Irish Open in 2009 as an amateur, was seen celebrating his latest title in a pub in West Clare.<\/p>\n

Footage posted by Barry Cowen MEP shows the Irishman signing with fans with the trophy in one hand and a can of Bulmers in the other.<\/p>\n

He then walks out of the pub with a beaming smile as he begins to reflect on the seventh European Tour win of his career.<\/p>\n

Lowry battled against the tough weather conditions on Thursday to open his tournament with a 67.<\/p>\n

A six-under 30 on the front nine followed on the Friday, which ended with his best weekend score of 62.<\/p>\n

Controversy aside, Lowry finished with 65 on Saturday before one last push on the final day sealed his triumph.<\/p>\n
