Introduction<\/p>\n
\u201cFor golfers, by golfers\u201d is a bit of a cliche, but when it comes to Galvin Green\u2019s rain gear, it certainly does ring\u00a0true. \u00a0No one who doesn\u2019t golf could understand exactly how a jacket should move to keep from impeding the swing. \u00a0Non-golfers would never sacrifice pockets for performance. \u00a0Galvin Green did this and more in designing one of the most rugged, high performance golf jackets we\u2019ve tested.<\/p>\n

Performance<\/p>\n
Most of the time, we review golf jackets in golf weather. \u00a0This Galvin Green jacket got a slightly tougher test \u2013 standing up to Chicago winter. \u00a0My first day wearing this jacket, the temperature was in the single digits, the wind was 30 MPH, and the wind chill was decidedly sub zero. \u00a0While I won\u2019t tell you that this jacket made me want to stay outside and build an igloo, it was a solid shield against the wind, and it made me wish I had\u00a0similar protection for my legs. \u00a0In any remotely reasonable golf weather, this jacket will keep you nice and toasty.<\/p>\n
The Gore-Tex shell is equally good at keeping out water. \u00a0Whether in\u00a0rain or indoor torture tests, this jacket kept me perfectly dry.<\/p>\n
The things that really set\u00a0this jacket apart\u00a0are the smaller details. \u00a0First is the positioning of the pockets. \u00a0Most jackets have a pocket on either hip \u2013 that\u2019s standard and no one would think twice about having them there. \u00a0The problem is that when those pockets get loaded up with stuff (as pockets are apt to do), they get in the way of the swing. \u00a0Galvin Green opted to dump both front hip pockets in favor of one on the chest and one on the back of the right hip. \u00a0Both of these pockets are easily accessible and plenty big to hold a glove, tees, or ball, but they\u2019re completely out of the way of your swing.<\/p>\n
Finally, the velcro strips on the back allow for a custom fit. \u00a0Most people have had the experience of trying to golf in a jacket that was either too large or too small. \u00a0When a jacket is too large, you end up with a noisy hindrance flapping around on your back. \u00a0When it\u2019s too small, you\u2019re unable to move. \u00a0These velcro straps allow you to get a fit that will allow you to swing comfortably without excess material drooping behind you. \u00a0At first glance this feature seemed a bit odd to me, but it ended up being one of my favorite things about this jacket.<\/p>\n

Style<\/p>\n
One thing that Galvin Green has been notorious for is large branding all over their apparel. \u00a0That\u2019s been toned down in the Alex jacket (and toned down further in the rest of the 2015 line), but there still won\u2019t be any doubt about what brand you\u2019re wearing.<\/p>\n
Beyond the branding, the style of Galvin Green is fairly conservative. \u00a0The Alex jacket comes in a variety\u00a0of colors, and the\u00a0splashes of color and contrast stitching\u00a0create a little visual interest without being too busy. \u00a0In short, no one is going to look bad in Galvin Green.<\/p>\n

I asked the same thing when I was first introduced to the idea at the PGA Show. \u00a0The answer is actually pretty interesting. \u00a0The Gear Up app is basically a combination of the Weather Channel app and your mother: it tells you what the weather is going to be at the course and what you should wear for that weather. \u00a0This is Galvin Green\u2019s way of introducing golfers to their layering system which includes everything from rain gear to underwear. \u00a0If you want to be prepared, it\u2019s worth checking out.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/p>\n
For players who want to play in the worst conditions, the Alex jacket from Galvin Green\u00a0gets my highest marks. \u00a0It will keep you bone dry in the rain and can block even the most driving wind. \u00a0Most importantly, it does this without impeding your swing.<\/p>\n
