but what an event it was and to watch it yesterday unfold was honestly incredible first off props to the golf course and I know the weather conditions weren’t wasn’t favorable for a few of the days but the golf course grew on me tremendously from when we played it a few weeks ago to actually the open I thought it was a really really good golf course and I love this idea that so much of it does actually depend on the elements cuz that is the open it’s not it’s not glorified beautiful sun shine playing golf and it’s just Target golf the guys playing in the morning compared to afternoons are almost playing different golf courses and and yet it’s a little bit of look of the draw but it’s the fact you’ve got to manage your expectations and you’ve got to be able to play in any condition and one day you’re hitting 99 200 yards the next time you’re hitting the 99 50 yards like it’s just amazing for all those different um characteristics I agree the only thing that somehow I think needs looking at but it never could be and you WR the look of the draw is the fact that the guys went out early Saturday had a different Golf Course those who went late on Saturday and that felt unfair because the guys who were going out late on Saturday were playing better golf hence why they were there the lead so I was thinking Al this would never happen would there ever be a way where the top guys after Friday almost get to choose their tea time wouldn’t work for TV and Etc but imagine that would be the that would be the luxury right Justin Rose and Rick Shields you’re both eight under piie playing great what time you going to go out tomorrow on Saturday and you look at the forecast you go we’re going to go early because the weather’s meant to be bad in the afternoon but you can you never get the guys agreeing oh exactly exactly but um and then last again we’re not going to go through every single situation of of the round unfolding but it was so teed up the the start of the final round there was so many players in contention I don’t know if I’d ever seen a such a packed leaderboard with so many different storylines you had in there Scotty sheffler who has been dominating golf for the last two years like he was lurking around you had Billy hell who was actually leading the open going into final round you had guys like Sam Burns who could have done something Russell Henley you had home favorites like Justin Rose who we’ll come on to just in a minute I don’t know if I’ve ever wanted a golfer to win a golf tournament more in my entire life existence ever the only one that’s close was it was the US Open a few years ago and Tommy was really In Contention yeah that’s true other than that um you had the story lines of of Daniel Brown in there you had um Tristan Lawrence like you had so many different story Shane Lowry like it was it was absolutely brilliant and then you just never knew which way it was going to go it could have it could have unfolded five or six different ways yesterday and even as the players reached the turn after nine holes a lot of them navigated the eighth hole very nicely I loved how it was only playing a 100 yards yesterday but then you get to the back nine it’s like right who’s got the minals who is going to play the best golf as the wind started to drop on that bat nine at Ro room which has notoriously been so difficult all week to go around that bat n in level power people were celebrating and were happy this time now it’s going to be a case of who has got the minerals to shoot an incredible score and there was one man for the job Xander schofl he played incredible yeah the bat nine honestly he did not miss a shot I know every probably most people listening watched it but he he was just unfl flappable he did didn’t put a foot wrong if he got tiny bit out of position he he made it he got up and down I mean that bird he made on 11 which is the famously ridiculously hard par for he hit made a great Birdie on there a great up and down Birdie on 16 after um leaving it just short middle of the green on 17 middle of the green on 18 just phenomenal phenomenal Golf and he went there and he grabbed the claric jug by the neck and he and he he wanted it you’re right and we had a question on Facebook if you’re not a member of Facebook group please do come and join search on Facebook for the rick Shields Golf Show podcast and this is from Tim Morris and his question was which we’ve basically just answered in what you’ve just said there Rick but in your opinion what makes a great major tournament is it an unexpected winner question mark a leaderboard stacked with big names at the top or crazy hardcore SL conditions Etc I think he’s pretty much hit the nail and the head with with that but also what happened yes okay you wouldn’t say that Xander was an unexpected winner obviously world number four I think going into this event but when you look at that leaderboard which you alluded to then you had Xander chuffle who who obviously went on to win who is really a certain his dominant and also look almost looking at Scotty sheffler going you think you’re number one do you let’s I’ll have two majors this year kind of thing what’s mad’s he’s world number three yeah and you look at his major resume it’s unbelievable you then got Justin Rose who has been around for forever who has got one major title already who was just so so Polished in his game he just looked so good out there the passion that he had as well was phenomenal to see and and he come through open qualifying exactly the absolute dream of the open you then obviously had Shane Lowry had John Ramy you did have Scott you had Matthew Jordan at tied 10 who obviously did well last year at his home course at Royal Liverpool he again seems to be set up for major champ well open championships great to see him doing so well but you looked at that leaderboard and the the stories you had from like literally world number one and world number four in in Scotty and and then choffle I think he was already world number three if I’m not misten right okay fer and you had guys who were obviously like a Daniel Brown who’ come through qualifying who are relatively unknown to to most people you’ve then got a guy like a Shane Lowry Etc Russell Henley Billy H there was so many Avenues it could have gone down none of which would have disappointed me I think I was very happy to see Xander win obviously like you I was cheering on for Justin Rose who we have spent a bit time with recently he’s a really nice guy but I think sorry just a quick update Xander’s actually now gone to world number two well there you go he’s gone ahead of Rory and I don’t think anyone can argue with that can it’s now Scotty sheffler Xander shley Rory maroy ludvig oberg is world number four um and obviously that’s the official world rankings um yeah genuinely genuinely that back nine I mean I so we had a great week at the open I was there as a work capacity from Monday all the way to Saturday I drove home Sunday morning I watched the golf at home with the family hoping to have that lovely bonding experience where I sat down on the couch and watched it with my three children wasn’t the case they were best interest in the golf I’ve ever seen him do you want to say fortunately I can’t show this on camera cuz you’ll see why but have a quick look at this video I’m going to show Rick now of why I couldn’t watch it in peace so you’ll see what I was faced with so I’m just showing Rick a video of my little daughter naked baby she was running around naked with no clothes on giving me random shoes when I trying to watch the golf it’s just honestly trying to watch golf with kids and and like I say I was really romanticizing this idea that I was going to come home the kids haden’t seen me all week we’re going to have a nice cuddle I’m just going to be able to sit on the couch watched the golf with the kids honestly Jude wanted me to play cricket the girls wanted me to teach him how to go on the skateboards and roller skates I mean listen I I was saying I’m locked into the golf and I really was and that I’ve never been and and I’m genuinely mean this and I can’t I remember when Tommy did so well was at the US Open when he was he was knocking at the door and he shot that incredible final round but I felt like Justin was right there like it it could have gone anyway he was Flawless in three rounds of golf and to be honest even yesterday I’m sure he wasn’t that disappointed with his round of golf like the top 10 played really solid golf I think Sam burns the only one that kind of dropped off the leaderboard a little bit but he he shot was it a 68 um 67 Justin Rose shot and he got beat by two by Xander who shot 65 like could he do much more and he’ll look at that back nine and maybe look at a few puts that slipped away none of them were gims like he he made that silly little kind of misjudgment I’m saying silly that’s quite critical it’s quite harsh but he made a bogey on 12 it’s it’s he hardly made a single bogey all week he made that bogey on 12 and then he had opportunities for a bird on 13 14 and 15 and they all slipped narrowly past where that’s where Xander hold a couple of those and that was that was the biggest difference you’re right but I think you might take have a different take on on this from me and ni actually maybe will message Justin if he’ll get back to us and and and here he’s taking it but I don’t feel like Justin Rose will walk away from that disappointed there’ll be a part of him thinking oh so close I’d love to get obviously a cleric joke but I feel like he didn’t lose it he just got beaten by a better player on the day simply he had he had to qualify as you say so first of all getting into the open would have been his main objective which he did obviously of course it it’s Justin Rose making the cut would be his next objective again which he did with ease I think coming tied second in that Stellar performance I think there’s a lot of positives to take from that it doesn’t feel like he’ll be leaving too disappointed no and you’re right because it’s not as if he didn’t have a blowup pole all day he’s not like a blowup pole all week said oh God if I just didn’t have that triple bog in the second round but he played really really solid golf he had that he had that look in his eye all week like wow this guy is just on it you can tell he’s absolutely ready for this um and again because we filmed with him selfishly I I was hoping the good luck the Old Ricky Shield’s good luck charm was going to work its one I would say that’s a successful good luck charm that he came tied second you would absolutely and I think as well like you look at these guys and we often think that it’s it’s winning That Matters to them and winning is the only thing that matters and to a degree that is the case obviously that’s how they gets his Elite level but also they will take a lot from a good performance and going into this week um Justin Rose with world number 67 he’s now 34 so he’s inside the top 50 that gets him obviously into all the majes that’s the kind of place where these guys want to be and should be a guy Justin Rose should never be had the top 50 really I don’t think he is very often to be fair um but yeah I think yeah he wants to win of course he want to leave with that claric J in the back of his car and um you know that would be his absolute career I think solidified having two major championships however going away tide second will give him a lot of positives I think for the rest of the season into next year

  1. The problem with this course is the totally blind shots. And bunkers that were totally unfair. I agree its the same for everyone, which to me is irrelivent. Best guy won the tournament, felt sorry for Rosie.

  2. I thought it showed how much of an impact liv is having on golf. The top pro’s are just nowhere near the elite level of years gone by. The top players playing only 3 rounds of 18, they all pretty much gas out. Then you have the PGA stars who are playing against and in lesser fields than years gone by. Xander was a worthy winner but he won cause others couldn’t control their game in the weather. He didn’t go out and strangle hold the course. He had an amazing final round, every other round was just okay golf. Not diminishing it at all, he was superb, especially the back 9. But I couldn’t help but watch over the weekend and just feel sorry for how disjointed it’s all become. Before liv, DJ was on the verge of becoming one of the golf’s greatest ever. Rahm as well, was powering along. Bryson and Brookes were motoring along nicely. Just feel like the games gone with both the tours.

  3. greens need to be smaller-fairways to be slimmer-rough to be deeper-more sand traps and water on all holes. I suck at golf and can still hit low 80s on a tough course pro cut greens. I should be shooting in the 100s. The game is too easy.

  4. I thought it was one of the best comps I have watched, tough, testing, frustrating, difficult and ultimately beatable by Schauffele. Loved it!

  5. This "recency bias" and validation is exhausting. It's not just a golf thing.

Every time something happens, people try to justify why this one was the best ever, and I really don't get why this need exists. Every tournament is great for its own reasons, each subsequent one doesn't HAVE to be better than the previous one, even if it was special. And if we were able to be transported to the past and watch older ones again, we'd think they're the best, purely because it's the one you've watched most recently.

    I just find it annoying.

  6. What made a difference on the back 9 of the Open Championship was the wind dropping. It allowed shaufelle to start driving the ball 320 with some accuracy, and then giving the ability to get closer to the hole. If you watch 13 th hole, you saw the difference then between him and Rose.

  7. The british open is to much randomness for me to be the best. Its more extreme than other events.

  8. the british open is a garbage tournament… and this british open is one of the worst ever.

  9. C’mon Rick, you literally say this every year. No, it wasn’t the best ever – it’s just the most recent one and freshest in the memory. Mickelson v Stenson is still the best. The 150th at St Andrews was more exciting than this years.

  10. Do I think this Open was great? Yes. Do I think it was the best of all time? No. I personally think Cam Smith hawking down Rory and Viktor a couple years ago is prob the best imo( only 22 years old), 2016 as well Phil v Henrik, and Lowry in 2019 is prob my top 3

  11. Cool that soufflé won and Horsesmell didn’t. Wearing a grey cardigan in your final round says a lot about your attitude to winning. A comfortable with coming 3rd😂😂😂😂😂😂

  12. That look that Justin Rose gave to his target before every shot was pure hatred. It was like he wanted to kill it.
