The clubface should be controlled with the hand and arms, not the hips and the torso. In the eighth Paddy’s Golf Tips video of a series about how you can teach yourself. I discuss how to actively use the hands, which also creates lag in the swing, and with the use of a stepping drill, I demonstrate how to hit a fade and a draw by releasing the hands.

Hands and Arms Control The Clubface: Not the Hips and Torso | Padraig Harrington
https://www.youtube.com/padraigharringtonofficial

draw fade draw fade draw fade that wasn’t my body doing that that was my arms doing it i just getting used to it all you amateur should be getting used to that motion control the club face with your hands and your arms not your hips and torso winner of the gold medal and the champion golfer of the year is Podrick Harrington [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] welcome back to Patty’s Golf Tips h this one comes from my childhood uh when I was a junior golfer I remember hitting a great shot out of the trees and coming out of the trees and somebody was here to comment what great hands he has i took that as an insult at the time and and I think I took it as an insult because this was kind of where coaching was I suppose in the in the late 80s you know it was about using the bigger muscles and the body and and and connection and all these sort of things so in some ways I was insulted that I had great hands it’s taken me about 35 years to realize actual in fact the most important thing in your golf swing is great hands so if you’re afraid of using your hands you’re doing it wrong what we want to do is we want to use our hands as effectively as we can and that’s very important and I say effectively because I I’m very conscious of the naysayers will say “Oh my god you’re going to early release.” I don’t see very many people it’s very rare for somebody to cast the club nowadays very very rare okay in actual fact I think if they try and use their hands from the top they probably will actually get a bit of lag the opposite of cast so what am I talking about i am saying you should actively and consciously use your hands to dictate how fast you swing the club face club head and how the shape of your swing and the direction of your club face so whether it’s open or square you should actively use your hands your body and your hips do not square the club face up okay and they do not create very much of the speed they create some of it your hands and your arms create 90% of everything that’s going on so why not think about them use them and use them effectively so what am I saying okay what the whole idea of golf this image is that people are going to get to the top and cast the club which would be terrible okay we don’t want to see that but we don’t see it very often i don’t know where that comes the likelihood is if you get to the top and you try not use your hands you are actually going to turn and cast the club if you get to the top and I say to you I want you to release that club as hard as you can i want you to use your hands if any I I don’t even mind if you let go of the club at the top i don’t even mind if you have a loose grip i want you to get there and then fire your hands as hard as you can the most likely outcome is you’re actually going to get a bit of lag before you fire those hands the people who really struggle from what I see are the ones who try not use their hands and that will be a cast by not using them they’ll turn and the club will just automatically get thrown out or the better players who have a hook a big block or a hook they tend to not use their hands but they’re decent players they get down here they’re stuck and they flip why not try use your hands all the way in the down swing just have a go and see what it feels like for you and when you’re doing it you can do it for speed and you can do it for accuracy so if I was you and I have no problem if you do it with the stepping drill which I like doing as well but we won’t use that we’ll do that in a second so I’m saying to you stand there i want to hit a big hook so I’m going to try and release that club as hard as I can and what you’ll see I actually I’ll do two and we’ll see i’ll try and have no release okay I drag the club i hit it in and I’ll try and have massive release and if I try and have massive release you’ll actually see I lag the club so by trying to fire your hands you’ll actually lag it so I’m going to try and release as hard as I can like so and I could feel that go this way before it went that way because automatically if you try and fire it you’re going to get that more and then it will fire so an early release subconsciously trying to early release actually cause a bit of a later release trying not to release is either going to cause you to cast or get down here and flip so the key to not flipping it or casting is actually release the club and you can release it for a draw or a fade so if I aim way left I can release it little chunky but there you go got my cut as I said earlier a deeper divot it’s amazing when you swing left you’ll always get a steeper divot and if I swing right aim a bit to the right release the club very little divot that’s just the nature of the game you’re swinging up more on this side and you’re swinging across more on this but again I’m using very active hands the first thing I think of in my down swing is trying to release that club face open or shut closed with loft or with loft you could do it all with your hands and your arms i can guarantee you I can swing with my hips and this is one of the biggest problems you see somebody will stand there and go I want to cut it and they’ll turn and that club is now actually swinging way if I turn that club is way swinging into out so the more I turn there the more I’m going to throw the club to the right so that doesn’t work swing your arms left swing your open the club face manipulate the club face try it you’ll have more fun so if I want to hit a big cut a high one here just flick the club under if I want to hit the low draw and again I fully recommend for all you casual players to get everything going together just line them up so I’m going to go let’s see i’ll go draw fade draw fade draw fade draw fade that wasn’t my body doing that that was my arms doing it just getting used to it all you amateurs should be getting used to that motion control the club face with your hands and your arms not your hips and torso i swear to you your hips and torso can go in one direction and your wrist angle can go in another direction it your wrist and hand and arms do not necessarily follow what your body’s doing okay so if you think turning means your arms are going left they may go left but it doesn’t necessarily follow usually people who turn their arms go right like that so I suggest you let’s have a go try it for a couple of weeks manipulate the club face with your hands and arms and see how you get on if you have a comment or suggestion about future videos please put it in the comments below if you enjoyed or found these 1. Let’s say that we can see it as the body movement is just a support for the arms and hands to gain some momentum and speed, but what you play with is the hands and arms, so you should focus more on this 👍.

  2. You moved your body and legs into a different position on every shot …proof that you can be really, really good at golf and not understand how 🤣🤣

  3. Hi Padraig, love your tips. Any chance you could explain how to hit driver without spinning your body, maybe something similar to this video using your hands if there is a difference to hitting irons, thanks ⛳️🏌🏼‍♂️

  4. Great video delivered with passion. The best part is the repeated lovely sound of the ball on clubface when he strikes it.

  5. Great video — very clear instruction.

One small point, though: while he emphasises using the hands and arms to shape the shot, it’s quite clear from his stance and movement that his body plays a role too. Just look at how his feet set up differently for fades and draws. So rather than contradicting what he's saying, it actually shows how body alignment and rotation work together with hands and arms to refine the shot shape — even if he doesn’t explicitly mention it. Which makes perfect sense.

  6. If you haven’t already, can you further explain what you mean by using the hands.

    Thanks

  7. I think that's why Moe Norman said "the swing balances me, I don't balance the swing!".

  8. Paddy, would be great to see a video describing your right forearm and right wrist through the hitting zone. Thanks

  9. How does turning your body hard left during the downswing make your arms go out to the right ?? Does this make club head bottom out to soon and divots pointing well right?

  10. Padraig thanks,slow down a bit,high handicap here.Explain one bit a time,slowly slowly,pleaseYou seem out of breath,Padraig.!

  11. Amazing that it’s so different from so many other golf teachings but makes so much sense

  12. Can you do some more on course videos Paddy? I quite often watch your round with Connor Moore. Lots of teachable moments and you have such a calm, father like demeanour. Makes it easy to watch and easy to learn from!

  13. J.H.Taylor wrote: As far as possible put your brains into your hands. Let the ankles, knees, and hips do their swinging movement as sub-consciously as possible, and let your thoughts live only in your hands’.
After seventy seven years of mostly wasted effort, and a recent one year injury break, I think I am finally starting to understand the golf swing a little better. Padraig is doing a great job de-mystifying the swing, and I am going along with him.

  14. Keep up the great work. My wife and I boarded a bus on the way to the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and who comes on board…Paddy Harrington, no pretense, no limo, just a great guy and champion golfer who shares his wisdom freely. Thank you.

  15. Great suff Paddy. I can generate a lot off power by just straigten the back arm and release the club. And as 50 plus years i also save my back 👌🏻

  16. This is good stuff and if you’d like a little more, search out Peter Croker. Only man to ever have the cover of golf digest two months in a row for golf in instruction. He was all over this 30 years ago when he found out that most of his own unaccomplished students hit the ball better when he told him to throw the club out of the top with their hands. Just like Mr. Harrington said, it increases your lag automatically.

  17. Would love to hear you dive into ball position in a future video! It looked like you were playing a fade off your lead foot and a draw off your back foot and I haven’t seen that much exaggeration before with an iron.

  18. That’s what I always said all by coaches keep telling me to fire the hips and rotate more I said my body will do all that and follow my arms and hands

  19. Simple effective teaching from a multiple major champion…thanks so much sir.🙏
