I’ve given it a full test, and here are my thoughts.
Enjoy,

let’s split bunker players into two groups on one side you’ve got those players who would rather be in the sand than in the rough they like nothing more than pulling their favorite wedge throwing open the club face and caressing that ball up there onto the green near the pin to the amazement of their playing partners then there’s the other type of golfer who dreads going into the sand they start to sweat as soon as they see the ball trickle in there they’re full of indecision they don’t know which wedge to use they’re desperately trying to think back to the last YouTube tutorial they watched on how to play the shots and then once they get over the ball they’ve really got no idea where it’s going whether it’s even coming out or not if you’re the first sandloving golfer then this video might not be for you so you’ve uh got my permission to hit subscribe and move along but if something about bunkers doesn’t sit quite well with you well then this club right here might be the answers to your prayers or at least that’s what Ping would have us believe so what’s it meant to do well long story short it’s called the bunker so the name gives it away and what Ping have done is they’ve created a club that is loaded with loft so it’s got 64° of loft on it it’s also got a really wide sole and a ton of bounce if you were going to take a look at it you’re going to look at it and think it’s similar in design to the Pingi 2 which is a series of clubs they had a great success with but the story behind this club is that they pulled in a bunch of different golfers all different abilities and the same aim how do we make a club that’s just no fuss gets the ball out gets it onto the green so it’s really not for that golfer with a high skill level in the sand this is for someone that just wants to see their ball in a bunker know what club they’ve got have a really simple way of playing it put it on the green not flag hunting necessarily just put it on the green so for golfers of all abilities that have struggled with bunkers for years there’s a lot to be said for that proof’s in the pudding though so let’s take our first shots with it and see what we think [Music] i had a load of spin on it i don’t know if you’ll see there but the way that I’ve been explained how to play this club is that you actually don’t open the face on it you don’t open your stance none of those things that for years have confused golfers keep the face square you keep your stance square to the pin and you just give it a thump not your normal technique by any means more like a chipping technique plenty of spin on it that one seemed to work out quite nicely it’s definitely no fuss wa you could throw a blanket on all of those ones so they’re my first shots with it so I’m aiming here at the back pin for you obviously just to give you that point of reference and that’s quite a long bunker shot with quite a bit of sand so it’s not the easiest but they were performing really well and like I said before the concept with this wedge is really about getting it out of the sand it’s no fuss it’s keep your stance square keep the club face square just give it a thumb try and take out all of the technical stuff let the loft let the bounce let the design let all of that do the work for you i have to admit all of the shots that I’ve played so far have done exactly that popped out no fuss quite a bit of spin i mean they’re wet greens so they should stop but so far so good for the ping there are three really good examples of just how easy it is to play it but the one thing I did notice on those ones and just to keep in mind is that you really just need to throw the club into the sand when they talk about like giving it a thump it’s really that it’s don’t overthink the technique is what I’m seeing throw the club into the sand and really with the bounce the soul the loft it seems to do a lot of the rest of the work for you so what are my initial thoughts on the bunker well I think there’s a lot to be said for it i love that concept of standing square keeping the club face square in the bunker because I think if you’re someone that traditionally struggles in the sand that’s going to be helpful for you the simpler you can make it the better it’s going to be i’ve also tested it various lies around the green so buried lies tight lies ones on down slopes and it performed really well the one thing that I would say with it is you got to remember there’s a lot of loft on it so you really do just need to hit those shots commit to them and let the club do the work for you whether it would go into my bag is the obvious question and to be fair I don’t think it would but then I don’t think that’s a negative either because it’s not really aimed for me i’ve got a series of wedges that I’m quite comfortable with and if you’re in that situation it’s probably not the club for you but I do think of people like my dad who over the years has struggled in bunkers he’s gone through different wedges different techniques never really settled on one i think for someone like that this could be a bit of a game changer as long as you just remember stay square give it a hit pop it out move on with your round i’m keen to do a bit more testing i’m actually wondering whether it would be good to get someone like my dad to test it to see how it works for them for me I found no problems with it but it’s an interesting one and I like the fact that Ping are trying to innovate in this way to make it more enjoyable to make it more straightforward see you again soon

I’m all up to “test” – there’s a slot in my bag just waiting for the BunkR.
Sound idea from Ping to help those, like me, that struggle from greenside bunkers, it's a winner 👍
Why is all these videos with this new club done in very shallow bunkers ?? Most bunkers in my club have a 2-3 meter lip to get over and for me it looks like it is coming out very flat
So, is this club really any different than the Cleveland smart sole? I have one of those and it's amazing. Quite frankly, every mid to high handicap should kick their egos and play one
watched the video even though I love the sand ('love' might be a bit too much) and you kindly invited me to keep scrolling 🙂 – it's a good looking wedge but would be difficult to get me off a cheap 56 degree i've had for years. thanks JP!
Still hit an inch or so behind the ball?
this club and the ping chipr could save strokes around the green.
Hardly a new concept. Callaway have had Sureout wedges available for some time. They have a 64 degree full face grooved club in their range. Also has loads of bounce.
I'm a 14.9 HCP, struggles from bunkers more than I'd like and only have 13 clubs in my bag at the moment. Feels like this club is made for me.
I bought it a few weeks ago and I am still terrible out of the sand with it lol – but I see the potential and need to use it more.
Does it work? Probably yes, but that's not the point. If you browse Amazon, you'll find plenty of similar clubs at a fraction of the cost of this Ping wedge. They perform just as well from bunkers and cost half the price. The only thing you're really paying extra for here is the name—Ping
Weight forward? Wide and downstanding? Or normal chipping position?
GREAT REVIEW! Would you recommend for someone like me who is ok out of bunkers but struggles with short distance chipping around the green?
