are you thinking about starting a golf apparel brand before you waste time money and a little bit of dignity here are 10 things you have to get right in the first 30 days Hi I’m Derek founder of Public Country Club a golf apparel brand that is built for the golfer who loves the game but not the stereotypes that come with it I started planning my apparel brand about 18 months ago and we finally launched this spring As a fun side project to that journey I started this YouTube series on how to start a golf apparel brand where I show you the highs the lows and everything in between One cool thing that has happened is since starting this series I’ve had so many people reach out to me about wanting to start their own golf apparel company and it’s been really cool connecting with other golfers who share the same vision One thing that I have noticed is that so many of you have similar questions like you’re just not sure where to start So I put together a 10-step plan to help you build the foundation of your golf apparel brand in just 30 days But before we dive in if you could do me one favor and hit like and subscribe to the channel it would mean a lot Uh it really helps this kind of content reach more people who are interested in learning this stuff Also if you want to talk about a brand that you’re starting more personally like on a one-on-one level hit the link in the description below and you can schedule a call with me where we can tailor strategies specifically for your brand and help you launch a little bit quicker and avoid making the same mistakes that I made when I first started And with that out of the way let’s get started The 10 things you must do in the first 30 days to launch your golf apparel brand the right way Step number one define your brand mission and customer Not every golf apparel brand is going to go after the same demographic Some people are going to focus on men Some people are going to focus on women Some people are going to focus on a super high-end luxury price point item and some people are going to focus in on a price point item Where you fit in the market determines exactly who you’re trying to sell to So you need to identify your mission your brand and your target audience before you even put pen to paper or even design a product You have to have a crystalclear message of what your brand is who you hope to reach and how you plan to reach them before you even start the process or it’s already over before it begins If you try to reach everybody you end up reaching nobody So understanding exactly who your audience is sets you up for so much success in the future One thing that I learned from listening to podcasts before I started doing anything with the with the apparel brand is that you want to give your target audience You want to give your customer like give them a name give them a backstory Who are they is it Steve who’s 37 who’s in financial planning who plays on the weekends because he’s got two kids in soccer So you need to identify exactly who your audience is so you know how to reach them Just saying golfers in your area is not a good demographic to try to reach because it’s just so widespread and there’s so many different categories of golfers within your own market You have to narrow it down and really go deep into the audience that you’re trying to reach into that individual person that you’re trying to reach Then ask yourself the following questions What problem does your brand solve for them right so for Public Country Club they’re the weekend warriors There’s the guys going out to have a few drinks on the golf course not take theirelves too seriously and and enjoying the game Uh they play in scrambles and they just want to look good while they’re playing golf but they don’t have that extra income to spend $200 on a golf hoodie They don’t have that extra income to spend $125 on a golf polo right so we’re trying to create a product for them And we’re also trying to create a community of golfers in that public golf sector The tagline for public country club is a country club for the rest of us And that’s really what I’m focused on right you’re going out and you’re paying $65 to play 18 holes with a card or $55 to play 18 holes in a card You’re waiting till the Twilight rates kick in so you can spend a little bit less on golf so you can play more golf That’s the audience that we’re going for And then ask yourself what feeling do you want them to get when they’re wearing your apparel so for me I wanted them to feel like they were getting a super high-end luxury item at half the cost Now is it just for the public golfer no it’s definitely not There are people at country clubs that don’t want to pay you know $200 for a golf hoodie and that’s perfect This brand can be for them as well But again I really wanted to get into the mindset of building a premium quality piece at a price point that made sense for everybody Step number two is to research your audience and your market You cannot guess what your demographic wants but you have the ability with the internet to find out exactly what they’re thinking and exactly what they will purchase Right join Facebook groups for golfers in your area that match that demographic that you’re looking for Join forums on the internet Golf WRX Reddit My Golf Spy Go where your audience is and conduct market research Are you looking for price point are you looking for loud colors are you looking for a subdued pattern or a subdued print that you can wear on and off the golf course really understand who your audience is and then understand what that audience is looking for Um and when you do this you may find out that this audience is already in line with exactly the product that you were about to build And that and that’s perfect You can continue to go down that road and you can continue to build a product that those customers are going to love What you may find out is that the audience that you thought you were going to reach doesn’t have an interest in what you were planning to develop At that point you can do one of two things You can go back to step number one and redefine your ideal customer or you can lean in to the market You’re like “Hey I resonate more with the golfers that I’m trying to reach but my brand doesn’t.” So then you can just readjust what you are about to offer so that way it makes sense for them so when you do launch they will purchase it The last thing you want to do is develop a product for a customer who wants nothing to do with it That’s going to result in unsold inventory and that’s going to result in you spending more time and money than you have when you initially start and your business will fail before it even gets off the ground Step number three is where your brand finally starts to come to life This is designing your brand concepts This is why you started the journey in the first place right this is what you’ve been envisioning the whole time Like you want to see your product in golf shops or on the back of golfers as they’re walking down the fairway Like this is why you started And it all starts by nailing this So this is where you’re going to start to design some prints You’re going to start to play around with some color palettes to kind of get everything right so the look is exactly the way you want it And then you’re going to take those prints and those designs and turn them into mock-ups And I know a lot of people out there are thinking like I’ve never designed a piece of apparel in my life I just thought this would be a really cool project right how do I do a mockup and I want you to know that don’t let these steps hold you up from getting to your end goal If you don’t have any clue on how to design a mockup and you’re not familiar with how to use Photoshop and and and software like that you can always piece this work out All right you can use websites like fiverr.com and upwork.com to find freelancers who are fashion designers or who who are graphic designers that can help you bring your brand to life bring those ideas that you have and put them on a mockup for you and make them look really good so they appear on your website and they look really crisp and really good on your website It’s a little bit of cost upfront but trust me when I tell you this making your brand look bigger and more professional than it really is or that maybe than you could matters so much more in the eye of the consumer So make sure you nail this If you’re not comfortable doing it on your own fiverr.com you can find a freelancer who will do it and you can set the budget for the project so you’re not overpaying every time you need a mockup If you are going to be serious about this and want to move kind of quickly and you don’t want to have to pay somebody every time you come up with a design click the link below schedule a one-on-one call with me and I will walk you through exactly how I make my mock-ups so you’re not waiting around All right step number four Your designs are finalized Your mock-ups are ready to go And now the fun and work kind of begins right because now what you have to do is you have to find a supplier that matches your brand identity your quality that you want and who can deliver something in a timeline that makes sense for you During this process what you need to do is reach out to five or six different manufacturers that can produce golf apparel You’re going to choose the top two to three suppliers that you reached out to to get some samples made Uh samples do take time You’re going to be 40 to 60 days from order till you get them in your hands But the things you need to be looking for when you pick a manufacturer are very simple You need to look for somebody who’s done this before and has pictures and images of quality that matches what you want You also want to see how responsive they are when you reach out to them You should never wait more than a day to hear back from your supplier And it’s important to vet that process early because if you’re reaching out to a supplier and you’re not hearing back from them for days and days and days on end they’re probably not super reliable And right now in the beginning part of it they’re trying to court you They want that order from you right so if they’re not responsive now they’re not going to be responsive when they already have your money So make sure you find a supplier that understands your vision has the quality that you’re looking for and is responsive every time you need them Right these people are the backbone of your brand outside the stories that you’re going to tell These people are the backbone of your brand and they need to be able to deliver so that you can deliver During this time when ordering samples it’s important to note that you should probably get a sample of every single piece that’s going to be in your line That way you can get it in your hands You can feel it You can test it out You can take it around to your friends get feedback A mockup that you love may not translate well when it’s in your hands and you actually see it in person It happened to me Uh then you just scrap that But it’s easier to scrap one sample piece than 500 actual pieces that you’re stuck with and can’t sell Not going to spend a ton of time on step number five Step number five is once you have everything planned out go ahead and start building out your website Um getting the pieces in place So all you have to do is plug and play the products whenever they’re in your hands Build the website out It does take a little bit of time but give yourself plenty of time in those first 30 days to actually nail down the bones of your website Personally not sponsored I like to use Shopify They make it super easy to drag and drop everything that you need so you can build a website out in a matter of days not weeks One thing I will mention when you are setting up your website make sure you have a clear call to action right at the top So what I have on my website is literally a a picture of a hoodie and then over top of that it just says golf’s best hoodies right i’m trying to drive people to the hoodies because I know personally I think I built a really strong product in that market and I know if someone purchases the hoodie chances of them coming back to purchase another hoodie are high Chances of them coming back to order the matching polo are even higher Right so drive them to one specific product that you’re the most proud of and then everything else kind of falls in line And now we’re into even more fun stuff but also more work Step number six is where you create your social media platforms Pick one or two social media platforms where you know golfers are extremely active and they’re posting a lot of content For golf really it seems like it’s Instagram and Tik Tok If you can get proficient at those two things you have a really good chance of success Don’t just set up your profile Start creating content Even if you don’t have any pieces of your own apparel start creating golf content around your niche Cuz it only takes one post to blow up for you to drive hundreds of thousands of people to your website that even though you’re not ready to launch yet you can drive them to a landing page where they can sign up for your email list Now they’re an engaged audience because they like you They like the thing that you made And now they’re super excited to be part of whatever you’re building whenever it launches And no this is not an excuse to be like I don’t use social media I’m not doing social media You have to live in this playground right you have to be able to perform in social media spaces because your audience needs to find you right no one knows who you are What’s the easiest way for them to find you through a post that you made The other thing that I like to do which is free and easy and it takes about maybe an hour a day is comment on other golf pages that have a similar audience to you By you showing up in their comments and people interacting with your comments they’re going to click on your profile when they click on your profile and see the things that you’re doing they’re going to be intrigued and they could purchase something just from a comment that you left That’s free advertising You make a funny comment in a post all of a sudden it blows up It has 24,000 likes Your page gets a half a million views over the course of the next month That’s so much more valuable than you could ever imagine On to step number seven is building out your email list before your brand launches We touched on it a little bit in the last section but this is so important You look at the most successful companies in the world They all have a massive email list You can sell to people without advertising to them or hoping you find them Drive people to your email list Get them to sign up That way when you’re ready to launch they are on your email list They’re engaged You’re getting right into their inbox right you don’t have to wonder if your ad’s reaching them Your email will reach them That’s one thing I wish I did earlier Um I I didn’t take the email list as seriously as I wish I would have Uh you know we ended up launching with a couple hundred people on that email list but now my thought looking back on it is like we had such good success on our first launch How much better would it have been had we had five times that amount of people on an email list so drive people to an email list get them to sign up When you get people to sign up keep them engaged Give them something to open that email for You’re going to get unsubscribes Don’t take it personally People are just going to unsubscribe from your email list It happens all the time Do not take that personally But what you can do is you can build a community of people before you even launch your product Right now you have people that are excited because they’ve seen your ads or they’ve seen your um your posts that you’re making and they’re ready to be part of whatever you’re about to build and release and they want that 10 days before launch Be like “Hey we’re 10 days out Little sneak preview of what we’re doing Uh the first 10 people that that email me back get 10% off uh whenever the store launches.” Then 5 days out Hey we’re 5 days out The first five people that email me back get 15% off whenever the store launches Hey we’re 3 days out This is exciting We’re almost here We’re so close to the finish line Build up that excitement with them right and then the day before the launch be like we are 24 hours away from kicking off the most exciting most fun golf community that you guys have helped build Make them part of your story We’re so excited that you’re here We’re so excited that you’re part of this and we can’t wait to see you in this Right So for doing that one person that emails us back is going to get their first order completely for free Right just builds that excitement builds that commitment They want to be part of it now because you’ve made them part of it Number eight is plan your launch People overlook this part They get so wrapped up in ordering and getting the samples in and and getting everything ready to go Plan your launch early You’re 30 days in Your first 30 days you should already be thinking about what it’s going to look like when you launch And by saying that I don’t mean like what’s our website going to look like how many orders are we going to get i’m talking about the little things What’s our poly mailer bag look like what’s our shipment items look like how does it how does it arrive to their house is there a handwritten note in it is there a little bonus like a couple stickers or some golf tees with our logo on it you have to start thinking about that part of the launch in the first 30 days because that’s when it really starts to matter because I promise you in day 60 and day 90 when you’re actually getting ready to launch you don’t want to be thinking about all the loose ends whenever you’re ready to launch and you’re ready to take orders So you don’t want to worry if you have the poly mailers You don’t want to worry if you have uh the the samples and the extras to put in there so that people can get excited about opening the package when it arrives The better you make the packaging the better it is for social media So one thing that I did was I put a handwritten letter in every single order that came through for the first 30 40 orders that we had Throw a 10% off coupon code in there Go buy some golf balls Throw a sleeve of golf balls in there What happens when you do that is when people open the package they take a picture of it They post that picture on social media you repost that and now other people are like “What am I missing out on by not ordering this?” So it’s really important to plan your launch now in the first 30 days even though you may be 60 days out from actually sending an order in the mail Uh step number nine is a pretty easy one here It’s to create and test ads You can take a picture of a mockup or you can take a picture um you can post a a video of you doing something funny or you just describing the brand like “Hey we’re not quite there yet but let me tell you about the greatest golf apparel brand that’s about to come to life that we want you to be part of.” Create that ad create that intrigue create that want to be part of something right so test those ads get them ready to go and start with small budgets $5 $10 a day run three to five different ads a month and see which ones are performing well because now you know the format of what kind of ad performs well so you can double down on it when you are ready to start taking orders Also don’t fall in love with your ad strategy There’s no reason to fall in love with your ad strategy Things will change your ideas will change Uh the market will tell you it sucks or it doesn’t suck So don’t fall in love with that Be ready to pivot And finally step number 10 You made it all the way to step number 10 And that is to reach out to local golf influencers and local golf community members And what I mean by that is you want to reach out have one-on-one conversations with golf influencers people who are creating golf content around your area that may want to be part of your brand that may want to represent your brand in some way Give them affiliate deals get the product in their hand make them part of the initial launch as well So there you have it The 10 steps that you need to take in the first 30 days to start your golf brand out on the right foot And I know we covered a lot of things in this video So if you want a full detailed
