Signature Event season closes up as the PGA Tour continues into Connecticut, fresh off J.J. Spaun’s surprise U.S. Open win over the weekend. Most of the world’s top-ranked players are slated to tee off at TPC River Highlands, including incumbent champ Scottie Scheffler, who shot 22 under par at this course one year ago. The No. 1 golfer tied for seventh place at the U.S. Open on Sunday, while No. 2 Rory McIlroy came in at an underwhelming 19th.

Spaun was spectacular at the U.S. Open. His major-sealing 64-foot putt for birdie became a proper-noun moment in recent golf history.

The Southern Californian scored his fifth top-10 finish of this season, and he is now up to sixth in the FedEx Cup points list. Leading all challengers, of course, is Scheffler, who has three wins since the month of May (the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, PGA Championship and Memorial Tournament). He got halfway to a career Grand Slam with his five-stroke triumph at Quail Hollow.

First behind Scheffler is Northern Ireland’s McIlroy, who plays in his third consecutive PGA event come Thursday. He and Austrian Sepp Straka are the only non-Americans ranked in the points table’s top nine. Keegan Bradley, No. 30 in the points standings, set the Travelers Championship tourney record back in 2023, finishing at 23-under to top Kenny Perry’s 2009 high-water mark. Jim Furyk set the course’s 18-hole record at 58 in 2016.

River Highlands makes for a serene and scenic view in New England’s summer months. The venue’s sixth hole is a demanding 574 yards, though the back nine eases up with two par-3 offerings. The Travelers Championship is the eighth and final Signature Event, which features a bigger purse of $20 million and a higher Cup payout of 700 points to the winner.
