Throwing golf clubs on the course might not be encouraged by golf social media sensation Paige Spiranac, but she could not help but appreciate Rory McIlroy’s party trick during the final round of the US Open.
McIlroy, 36, was seen cutting a frustrated figure for much of the week at the US Open.
The Northern Irishman did at least save his best golf for the final round with a joint best of the day 67.
That saw McIlroy sneak inside the top 20 with a T19 on 7-over par and eight shots behind eventual winner JJ Spaun.
McIlroy reached boiling point in the second round when he tomahawked his club after an errant shot on the 12th.
The World No.2 then smashed up a tee box marker on the 17th, which will likely lead to a fine with the USGA.
He was still throwing clubs around on Sunday.
Only his latest club throw will likely go down as the finest of all time in history.
Whether or not McIlroy purposely intended to rebound his iron off his bag and into his left arm remains to be seen.
But it certainly looked pretty cool.
Or “sick” as Spiranac liked to phrase it.
“I’m sure people are going to be mad at him for throwing a club but 1. We’ve all been there and have thrown a golf club 2. This was sick.”

“Rory McIlroy entering GOAT club thrower territory now,” wrote one impressed golf fan.
McIlroy has made it clear he will not always be speaking to reporters after tournament rounds any more.
But he did say a few words on Sunday.
McIlroy admitted he was badly struggling for motivation ever since having completed the career grand slam at The Masters in April.
In his words, he’s climbed Everest now, so what else is their to climb?
McIlroy said if he can’t find motivation for next month’s Open Championship in Royal Portrush then he doesn’t know where it will come from.
“I just need to get myself in the right frame of mind,” said McIlroy, who admitted on Saturday that he is still irritated by the golf media.
“I probably haven’t been there the past few weeks.
“But getting home and having a couple weeks off, hopefully feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, will get me in the right place again.”
McIlroy missed the cut the last time The Open was played at Royal Portrush in 2019.
The Open takes place from 17-20 July.
McIlroy is scheduled to compete in this week’s Travelers Championship, the final Signature Event of the PGA Tour season.
