Sam Burns clings to one-shot lead heading into final round of U.S. Open
sam Burns one under 69 sam leading the US Open heading into the final round what’ll sort of be your mindset and what will you do and until your round tomorrow yeah I think um you know if I’ve said it once I’ve said it a hundred times but this golf course is difficult um and it’s takes a lot of patience i think today uh didn’t drive the ball as well as I would have liked to um but when I got out of position I feel like I did a good job of getting myself back in the fairway you know having a wedge or short iron in my hand and give myself a chance for par and was able to convert some of those and kind of kept the momentum going so that was kind of key to the round today we’re going to go to on the right Patrick hi there Sam um there’ve been seven seven first time major winners at this very famous and historic course um I wonder what it would mean to you personally to continue that trend yeah it’d be incredible i think um you know as a kid growing up you you dream about winning major championships and that’s why we we practice so hard and work so hard and um all these guys in this field I think would agree that um you know to have the opportunity to win a major is is special and um I’m definitely really excited for tomorrow but just think of some of those names already of the seven their places in history how does that make you feel yeah it’s incredible i mean I think there’s a uh you know this place is special in itself and um the history here and um all the people that have been before me and walked these these grounds and played here uh it’s really special straight back Kyle yeah i was wondering if it’s been difficult at all over the last couple years just to watch what Scotty’s done and think man I I’d like to have some of those experiences as well at major championships and some of the bigger events yeah um Scotty’s obviously you know an incredible player uh I don’t think I need to say that uh but I think um you know we obviously spend a lot of time together and uh being able to talk to him and just kind of learn from him and and ask him questions um has been really cool and it’s been you know he’s as good of a player as he is he’s a better guy and I think that’s what makes it really really special to watch um because you you want to root for somebody like that and so he’s easy guy to root for and um you know he happens to be also the best player in the world but uh yeah it’s it’s been nice to to kind of pick his brain and and ask him certain things has has there been any part of you though that’s like man I’d love to have that experience of contending for and winning a major just just being so close to him and seeing him do it yeah of course i think um you know as a competitor that’s you know that’s why we show up to play we show up to play to win and um you know watching him do that and watching him have success um you know it brings me a lot of joy and and you know him and his wife Meredith and and Bennett um they’re just an unbelievable family and uh it’s it’s been such a joy to watch um you know how they steward that success uh to others around them and um just the the amount of respect that we have for them is uh very high front left Brentley sam I think a lot of guys in your situation who have chased majors for seven eight years would try to change a whole bunch of things you’ve kept things the same since you were a teenager live in the same place same coach same agent all these things why is consistency important to you as you continue to chase these trophies yeah I think uh you know my dad has always said you got to dance with who brought you um and and you know for me uh you know my coach and I have been working together since I was 15 or 16 um and you know to me it seems way more complicated to go seek advice from someone else who doesn’t know me or know my golf swing um and I I fully trust him and and you know what he thinks and what he says and uh you know our relationship is much more than just a swing coach um so I think for me you know golf is complicated enough it’s it’s difficult enough um you know for me I’ve always thought just trying to keep it simple and figure out what works for me we’re going to go on the right Shane uh Sam right at the end they flashed a stat in the screen that I think you and Ryan Fox are the only two guys that haven’t had a three putt yet and I know you’ve always been a good putter but is there something first is there something about these greens that you dial into like do you feel in the zone and second being a good putter do you like when it’s a really hard putting place because it accentuates what you do well above the other players well I think the golf course I play at at home Square Creek uh it’s a Fazio design it’s big surfaces and lots of slope um so I think I’m I’m kind of used to having a you know 15 or 20 footer that may break five or six feet um and I like that kind of artistic ability to kind of see the break and um you know putts that are really straight are more difficult for me cuz it’s just hard to see kind of where it’s breaking so um I don’t know if that helps me or hurts me on these greens uh these greens are very challenging i think you know it’s not so much the raw speed of these greens it’s it’s the adjusted speed with how much slope there is i mean you can have some putts on you know like number one for example putting from the front of that green to the back is it must roll a 30 and putting from the back to the front it probably rolls a six um it’s just how much slope is in that green so I think that’s the challenging part a lot of times here is you’re trying to figure out okay this putt breaks seven feet right to left but the first half is you know putting back up the slope and then really once it starts turning it’s kind of it’s picking up speed and so I think that’s that’s the really tough part about these greens last one on the left Dylan yeah Sam I think this is your second Father’s Day tomorrow and I was just wondering uh how being a dad has maybe changed you personally or professionally yeah uh I mean it’s definitely life-changing for sure i think um you know our nights at home and days at home look a lot different now uh we were joking with the shufflers uh yesterday afternoon and we were out in the yard and and the boys uh no clothes on just playing in the little splash pad having the time of their lives and we were like “What did we do before them?” You know we’re like “Well we probably just sat around and watch shows and it was quiet.” Um but it’s so much fun i mean it’s there’s nothing better for me you know getting home after a long day and uh you know seeing Bear and Caroline and getting to hang out with them and just um you know I enjoy it so much and um you know to have a chance to win on Father’s Day would be really cool thanks for the time Sam good luck tomorrow
