robert mcintyre is confident that three more rounds of level par golf could be enough to secure him the us open title come sunday the 28-year-old scott opened his campaign at oakmont with a solid even par 70 on thursday a performance he later ranked among the top 10 of his career although mcintyre has yet to finish inside the top 35 at the us open he currently sits just four shots off early leader jj spawn honestly i’m delighted with that mcintyre said following his round i felt i played beautifully especially off the tea no real mistakes and i drove the ball as well as i can that’s definitely up there with the best rounds i’ve played oakmont’s brutal layout tested players from the first te and mcintyre was no exception it’s so tough out there he said every shot feels like it’s on a knife edge miss the green by even a little and suddenly you’re trying to pitch over thick rough to a rockhard surface that runs away from you mcintyre’s opening round included three birdies and three bogeies a balanced scorecard that avoided any major setbacks particularly on the daunting 276yd par three eighth hole at the time of writing only 10 players in the 156man field had made more birdies the oben native’s best major finish remains a t6 in his open championship debut in 2019 but his recent form suggests he’s trending in the right direction commenting on spawn’s impressive early lead mcintyre said four that’s unbelievable i said it out there you can get something going early if you start on 10 maybe take advantage of 10 11 12 and 14 but to shoot 66 here he must have barely missed a fairway that score could very well hold up as the best of the day as for his own strategy going forward mcintyre is keeping it simple replicate thursday’s performance three more times i’m going to have good lunch now he said with a smile i’ve put myself in a great position it’s a strong start hopefully the course doesn’t get too firm and fast there’s some massive slopes out there but honestly if you shoot four level par rounds at this place you’re leaving with a trophy i’d take that in a heartbeat
