Look up where these analytics and papers come from… where they get their data. At least in the early and mid 2000s, they were pulling data from high school and like D2 university.
For the NFL they just run opinions as facts like, like DVOA. Give it a funny acronym that people can repeat and it doesn't matter if it is bogus. The Defense-adjusted Value Over Average [DVOA] system breaks down every single NFL play and compares a team's performance to a league-average. Emphasis on averages. We are talking a crap run organization that gets its doors blown off gets piled in with good teams and people want to make judgments for what a team should do in the conference championship vs other top teams.
Give me a DVOA ratings chart for ONLY NFL Divisional round and conference championship games where everyone is a contender and then tell me what the analytics say, not when they are muddled by a good team putting a 50-burger on a crap team.
