In a tense five-man playoff, Cameron Young birded to secure the final spot, capitalizing on key mistakes by the others. Homer, who had been in qualifying position late, bog eyied his final hole of regulation, opening the door for a tie with Fowler, Young, Eric Cole, and Chase Johnson. In the playoff, Fowler faltered with a bogey from the rough, while Homer’s second playoff hole also ended in a bogey, knocking both out of the running. Young’s clutch birdie earned him a place in the US Open field. Johnson and Cole were named alternates. Homer, who carried his own bag all day, called it a bummer and admitted, “I never play well in the US Open anyway.” Fowler, meanwhile, took solace in qualifying for the Open Championship at Royal Portrush, saying, “Links Golf is my favorite.
