I had an online client of mine that really wanted to fix his down swing and trying to shallow out the golf club. Now, I think out of all of the ingredients that golfers want to fix, shallowing out your golf swing in the down swing is a huge, huge factor that we all want to see. Shallowing out your down swing is going to relieve you of any chicken wing through strike and it is also going to help you with some ball compression. Let’s take a deep dive into shallowing your down swing. I’ve talked at great length about down swing shallowing and the differential between how your golf club swings on the way up and how it swings on the way down can often really differ for many golfers. If you’re battling with a path that’s swinging to the left and a face that’s hanging out to the right, this is really going to help you. making your golf club steeper to then more shallow really gives the the golfer the opportunity to have a much better path line and a ball that’s going to draw to the target. Not only that, but when we have a steepening shaft in the down swing where it starts to get on top of us, it can also encourage some real chicken wing through the ball, which as we all know is pretty ugly to look at. and also causes some real impact issues. Michael wanted to fix really his obviously his steepling in the back in the down swing, but also this chicken wing through strike. So, I’ve got this drill that I gave him and it was very much a case of him trying to work on his handle through strike lowering. He was another golfer that worked on trying to swing from the inside. And I had a client this morning that had prolific outside in path lines that we didn’t work on changing the path. We changed on really how he works the handle through strike and beyond. This drill for the shallowing out of the down swing is a very simple one. I want you to set up just inside the golf ball. And it’s really important that you set up just inside the golf ball. This outside ball really gives you a sense of where the outside of the golf swing is. If you’ve been a golfer that’s tried to work on shallowing and got the handle out to the right, that ball is in danger of being hit when you first do this drill. So, take the golf club halfway back where your left arm is parallel to the floor. And wherever you’ve got yourself at halfway back, don’t worry about it. What I want you to do is take the club shaft parallel to the ground. So, this shaft and the ground are parallel with each other and put your hand on the golf club. Now, if you’re someone that swings from the inside, that golf club is going to bottom out and swing out to the right. What we want you to do is really start to feel how the handle is going to work down. Look how the club head now swings out. And so your ability to now get the club to bottom out on the mat is going to be determined by how much you can make this handle work towards you through strike and not away from you through strike. The fact that you’ve clicked on this video means that you are interested in shallowing your down swing. Go check out this video as well because this is going to be a big help to you in this cause for shallowing out your down swing. A shallow shaft in delivery requires a handle that works towards you to make your club head strike the ground. So now what I want you to do is get yourself up to the ball. Take the left arm parallel to the floor and just make that club shaft parallel to the ground. Now I want you to hit the golf ball from here. The first one will always be out of the heel because you’re used to the handle going out to the right. Then I want you to go up to the top. Left arm parallel to the floor. Sh make the club shaft parallel to the ground. And this one, you’re now going to be a lot more aware of where that handle’s working. It needs to work down and to the left. Now, all of a sudden, you’ll start to sense how this handle needs to track through the golf ball. The strike is going to be inaccurate to start with. It’s not an easy drill. Left arm parallel to the floor, shaft parallel to the ground. Now, we’re going to swing through. And there we are. We’re back out the middle down from the inside and drawing. This is not an easy drill. How the right shoulder, the left hand, and the right hip work through strike will change forever when you do this drill because it’s going to make the handle work towards you and speed up the right side. When you speed up the right side in your through swing, it gives you the opportunity to lengthen your arms. And when you lengthen your arms, you suddenly get rid of this chicken wing that so many of you will have seen on the other side of the golf ball. The chicken wing that causes inaccuracy with strike and inaccuracy with start lines and bend lines. Once again, take the left arm parallel to the floor. Lay the shaft parallel to the ground. And now make a foo swing. You’ll start to change the angle of attack, the path line, the draw flight. Now take the golf club up to the top of the back swing. Get the shaft line back to parallel. Shaft line back to parallel. Left arm parallel to the floor. And then swing through. This will start to give you the ball compression that you’re after. Angles of attack down. Left arm parallel to the floor. Lay the shaft parallel to the floor through swing. Get yourself lined up. Good path lines, good angles of attack. Am I being clear enough? Left arm parallel to the floor. Take the shaft parallel to the ground. Swing through. This is giving you the chance for the right side to move around the golf ball. The minute you lay the shaft to the ground, parallel to the ground, and you work underneath, it’s not going to end well. Left arm parallel to the floor. Shaft parallel to the ground. Swing through. This is as good a drill as you’ll ever find to getting your path line from the inside angle of attack down or the face to path in a negative fashion. As long as you’ve got a good grip, which you’ll find right up here, I have not gone up to the top, dropped the handle down, and swung out to the right. I’ve got the shaft parallel to the ground. The handle is out in front of me and I’m now moving that golf club through. It’s a drill not for the faint-hearted, but it’s a drill that will change the way you deliver the golf club down. That's worthy of everyone to at least try. It does correct a lot of bad…Good one Stu.
Love that! Brilliant.
Great drill! I find myself moving better through the ball and to a complete Finnish so much more fluent . All the pieces to the puzzle are collective coming together with each of your videos!
So do we want to feel shaft parallel with ground in our swing?
As a dad who has been helping his son with the basics before we look at lessons, I have noticed he has been getting his hands deeper on the way back and swinging further and further to the right on the way through (and getting very stuck). This could just be the ticket. Thanks.
Fast Question. I have been binge watching your videos. If a golfer makes the appropriate changes to incorporate your swing fundamentals and grip, will he or she need to flatten their irons lie angles? Thanks
When you do this right, you know it. When you do it wrong , you know it. It's a lovely feeling when you do it right.
Great video. But this is not easy to do. It takes some guts to change from years of pulling the shaft downwards. When made right ( one of five) the shot really 😬gets a penetrating trajectory . Perhaps a lower one and I would like to hit it a bit higher. Thats my next challenge. Thanks a lot
…….its almost like your turning the weight of the iron into the weight of the ol broom……hmmm….this drill is awesome Stu……thanks ⛳🍺
Stu, I’ll definitely try this drill and report back. Cheers.
Exceptional! 🔥 🔥
This drill is revolutionary in that is simplifies the backswing and down downswing without having to think too much and is quite automatic taking the stress out of the swing for good contact.
