Hi I’m Matt Lockey, welcome to my Coach Lockey YouTube Channel. This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf, and to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf course vlogs, golf challenges, golf tips, golf lessons, golf club reviews and the odd golf club unboxing. So pretty much everything golf!
I want to help you play better golf by providing coaching videos on all topics about golf. How to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
As well as helping you produce the best long game you can have, I will help you lower your scores by chipping better, stopping duff and thin chips, pitching the ball closer and creating backspin like the tour pros. Finally, I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts too!

If you struggle with an over-the-top golf swing, which causes you to slice the golf ball, I have the perfect golf swing tip for you. This simple golf tip is going to get you hitting from the inside every time, helping you hit longer and straighter golf drives. I mean, come on, who doesn’t want that? This basic golf swing drill is helping so many golfers, and especially beginner golfers, learning how to hit their driver. Before I give you this simple driver tip though, if you’re new to the channel, hello and welcome. If you’re a returning viewer, hello again. Little reminder for you all, if you’re not subscribed to the channel, please do consider hitting that subscribe button. It helps me to continue to make free content just like this to help you lower your scores. Hit the thumbs up and turn your bell on so you get notified of when I upload all my new videos. So, if you are a golfer down that lens struggling with a slice, maybe an over-the-top golf swing, and you want to start hitting it from the inside, we need to check a couple of things. First, we can’t have a face that’s open to your path. Because if we have a face that’s open to our path, and we start moving our club more from the inside with that open face, that ball’s just going to start further right and go further right. Not the best recipe. So check things like your grip and wrist angles to make sure that your club face is more square rather than open or even a little bit closed to that path to hit that ball straighter and longer. I’ve got plenty of grip videos and wrist angle videos on my channel, so make sure you go and check those out. I’ll pop some in the corners of the video here and in the description down below. Before we move on to how to hit from the inside, though, some golfers actually react to hitting it more from the inside and square their club face out anyway. So maybe give this drill a try first and then if you still struggle with that open club face, go and check those videos out as well. Not all golfers are the same. Now what do we need for this video? I need you to grab a to stick or an extra club. Doesn’t matter which club, any club. And I want you to put that club or to stick on the ground in line with your golf ball on the floor 90° from your target line like so. Now, the thing that’s going to have the biggest influence on path to make sure that you’re hitting from the inside is your shoulders and where they’re pointing. Slices of the golf ball. If you pop a club across your chest like so, your driver and you swing to the top of your swing, slices of the golf ball, and lots of people think this as well, that you’ve got to get open in the down swing. So, they start spinning out really quick and get these shoulders pointing left far too soon. And that’s also what causes those sorts of over-the-top moves. There’s hips going back. You don’t really get a shift over towards the target. You just think, right, I’ve got to get my body turning. And it’s also a reaction to that open club face as well. Because if I have an open club face to try and find target, I’ve got to try and start that ball left. So again, I start moving my shoulders far too quick, spinning out my hips too quick, and you get these sorts of looks. So, what I want you to do is set up to the golf ball and then pop your driver across your chest. Again, set myself up and then pop my club across my chest like so. I’ll just mind my mic. Hopefully, I don’t hit it. And then what I want you to do is make a back swing. And then what I want you to do with that club that you’ve got on the floor is shift your body over. So, the club across your chest and the one on the floor pretty much match up. This one will be covering the one on the floor. And look at what happens to my body. I start to shift towards the target a little bit. I start putting pressure in the floor on my lead foot. And I keep my chest and my upper body close to the target for a little bit longer than maybe what we demonstrated with those slices of the golf ball at the start of the video. Now, this is what’s going to really help you hit the golf club and your club path more from the inside. that shift towards the target and basically keeping your back towards the target for a little bit longer in that down swing is going to allow you to have more space to move that club into. So I set myself up, swing to the top and use those same feelings. Now if I start lowering my arms, look at where this club is going to start to come from. More from the inside, hitting in to out to start that ball down the right and get it moving back to target. When I use this with my students, as soon as they start to use this drill and get a feeling for it, they’re like, “Oh my word, light bulb moment.” Because if I set myself up, go to the top, and I start spinning myself out really quickly, like the slices of the golf ball, my club is nowhere near lining up with that one on the floor. Up to the top, push into the ground in your lead foot, and get a bit of a shift towards the target. And try and line these clubs up together. All of a sudden, you’ll be in a completely different spot to be able to hit more from the inside. You’ll also get your club a lot lower and moving it more up on the way through, which is also going to help your angle of attack, getting you to launch that golf ball better as well. High launch, low spin bombs. Yes, please. And then I want you to go in and hit one. Set yourself up to the golf ball. Pop your club across your chest up to the top. Match those clubs up with a bounce into that lead foot. And then set yourself up. Try and get that same feel. Bounce into that lead foot. Maybe leave your arms up there when you’re doing the demonstrations. And then give it a good tonk. Started down the right. Draw him back. Lovely shot. This simple golf drill is so easy to put into your routine at home. Just practicing in the kitchen or wherever. Get a club across your chest and get into those positions on the driving range before you’re hitting balls. Even before you’re hitting your next golf shot on the golf course while your other players are just hitting theirs, have a little practice. Boom. That’s the feel. Then go and hit your shot. One more thing before I let you go. You’re going to be in a great position now once you get to the top of your swing here and move across and shift and get that weight into your lead foot to start pushing out of this lead foot. That’s going to get your hips opening and do it all for you. So, you don’t need to worry about it. You’re going to be in such a better spot. It’s going to help you get from the inside more. Push. Push. Loads of space here to get this club lowering and then helping you with that angle of attack as well. Let’s give it a go. Push up. Oh. Oh my word. That is massive. That is massive. And that’s what this simple golf drill is going to help you achieve. Longer and straighter golf drives, hitting from the inside every time. Now, before I go, I’d love to know if this drill helps in the comments down below. So, make sure you leave a comment. And little reminder again for you all. First 😜😜😜
I had a light bulb moment just watching the video. Now I can't wait for my next range session!!
Thanks coach. I’ll give it a try.
Great tip coach will be definitely working on that thanks 👍
Works with irons to?
When I try this I hit waaaaay down on it with driver. Like driver spin at 4000 and angle of attack -4 down.
BUT … DON’T move your head toward the target (as you’re doing here).
Most of us shift (at least slightly), but for most of us, what causes the slice is leading with the upper body (rotating the shoulders at the start of the downswing) 🤔
… no?
This drill has not helped me at all because I already hit driver extremely straight. But I love the content. 😅
Thanks Locky, we'll give it a go
I love this guy. He really has helped me get back to my 7 handicap.
Do you need to roll over your hands at impact. Kinda L to L feeling
Brilliant. So well explained – cheers Locky
Hi. What driver due play and shaft? Thanks. You are gooooood!!!!!!! 😅
Can you do this with irons too??
Coach, this is a great drill and it's easy to do as well. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
nice!
100% going to give this a go next time I’m at the range. Where is it you coach and how do you get booked in
Algos are crazy. Watched a short byJustin Rose and he explained his preshoot routine exactly the same way. Money!
Hi. Is this apply to woods and long irons as well ?
Excellent coaching video Mathew, thank you 👍
Sounds so simple, but the weight shift is oh so subtle. Last year I had a spell where I overdid it and had so much lateral motion that I could not get my lead hip to rotate out of the way anymore.. less power and too hooky drives as a result. This early season I toned it down too much and now I am fading everything. So hard to find the correct dose and feel.. but thanks for the reminder tip Coach, love the channel.
