GLADSTONE, Mich. (WLUC) – It’s time to dust off your golf clubs to help preserve a historic part of Gladstone.

The Soo Line Steam Engine golf scramble returns next week. The Soo Line Steam Engine Authority #730 organized the event.

President John Pickard says the railroad played an important role in the city’s history. The fourth annual fundraiser will help preserve that history by maintaining the black shiny engine next to US2/US41 in Gladstone.

“Without the Soo Line, Gladstone wouldn’t be here because the Soo Line was looking for a deep-water port,” Pickard said. “We had a natural deep-water port here called Saunders Point.”

The golf outing is next Thursday. It costs $360 for a four-person team. Registration starts at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.

The tournament format is an 18-hole scramble. Prizes include a 50/50 raffle and a gun. There is also a chance to win a brand-new Jeep Compass donated by O’Connor’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Pickford. To win the Jeep, you just have to score a hole-in-one on the 13th green.

The day concludes with dinner and an awards ceremony, which Pickard says the public is welcome to attend.

You can make a dinner reservation and sign up for the tournament in advance by calling the club at (906) 786-4430.
