[Music] welcome to the Mark Jackson show we back with part two of our episode with Kenny The Jet Smith we excited but before we get started we got to give a shout out to our sponsors Underdog fantasy click the link in the description and play the pick them game that’s one of our favorites so we happy to have you here Legend I gotta ask you because we we didn’t touch on it in part one okay but Inside the NBA TNT one of the greatest shows of all time the greatest the greatest I give it the greatest show of all time what spurred that that level of relationship between you uh Shaq Ernie and and Chuck well it started before they got there Ernie and I had created an environment that attracted Chuck so then Chuck was like man those guys are kind of loose CU he had an opportunity to go to NBC or us which actually NBC at the time was GNA pay him much more money but he saw the avenue to come in and create what Ernie and I had created and then when he came he just th kerosene kerosene on it and exploded because now people start to pay attention that’s a loud bang yeah so when Char when Shaq is retiring he’s a loud guy he heard the bang he’s like I got to be part of that so we created a culture throughout and I believe this is my humble opinion we created the the landscape of what sports media is today people didn’t do the things that they do today before we did them you didn’t joke you didn’t laugh you get 15 seconds then Kenny’s 15 seconds then now it’s no we talk we interact we created the environment I even think were podcast because people wanted more of that they wanted to hear more of what these players were creating and saying we had a segment players like a Players Court where everyone sat around and told stories so people like oh that would be great to hear every day like it started with us yeah I was thinking about it even dress codes there was dress codes on television white shirts you had to wear a white shirt I was like I can’t do that this is before chucking before shot can’t do that why I don’t dress like that sometime I wear blue shirt sometime I wear gray sometime I wear red do what you want Kenny you go ahead you could do that now everybody dresses the way they want you know they can wear do-rags well I gotta catch it straight I made the landscape yeah you P the way be who you want to be you pave the way app this is basketball version of Soulja Boy he was the first I just saying man was you the first to wear dag I never wor dag but it allowed you I’m going send you one in the mail I got you but it’s it’s the energy that I feel has created the a landscape lab joke it’s an entertainment show that’s but the hardest thing is to duplicate what we do because no one would ever do from a production standpoint or a network they would never do it anywhere else you know what that is give us freedom like Charles myself and Shaq have never been to a production meeting wow ever I went to one I was the only one who went to one and I went there and I’m sitting in the production eating halfway falling asleep and and I went to our producer Tim Colin he’s like man Kenny why you not paying attention I’m like what’s going to happen in a game that I haven’t heard read or been part of all right yeah you don’t have to come anymore and we never go so when we go to the set no one knows what we’re going to say not the producers not each other not Ernie not our director no one knows what we’re going to say there’s no no script there’s no question to be asked we just come on and all we know is that the game is the Lakers versus the Clippers that’s it Ernie knows when the commercial breaks are coming in he goes to production means that’s Ernie’s job us and then Charles will do something like this first time ever he’ll go they’ll say okay you got 30 seconds no I got I need more 30 seconds and he’ll keep going into the commercial break and they’ll let us go never in television will they do that on network we did an interview one time with the white Howard and we stayed on the air for 17 straight minutes in the interview and we and he and our producers was like we’re not going to Commercial and we skipped to commercial no network would let you do that right no one would do that but I I’ll say this because you you being awfully humble with with your opinion you’re a two-time NBA champ and you are part of the greatest sports Studio show of all time in any sports you have set the trend and set the tone for what we witnessed today from a guy that grew up with you awfully proud and tremendous respect and appreciation for how you continue to change the game how much has New York City impacted you being from New York well being from New York the impact is like we don’t view the game the same way as everyone else we we we look at the S like the peripheral as well so like you could dominate a game or be really known in New York City and never scored basket most places around the country the guy who scores the most points is the most popular guy not in New York City that’s the only place in the world to me where that is the necessarily the most popular guy the guy who sets screens the guy who has eight assists the guy who gets 10 rebounds he can walk through New York City and they’ be like oh that’s that’s that’s the animal he gets every rebound like remember kener Bannister absolutely dude how much you have like five points a game was one of the most popular Nicks because it’s not about scoring when when the way we came up so that’s a lifestyle thought process too like I don’t have to always score to be the best so if you take that and put that in other aspects of your life it’s the same thing so I think that’s just a New York trait that’s changed my way I look at the game so I don’t I never look at it the same way as Charles or Shaq the way they look at it we’re gonna always have a different Viewpoint because I’m not even looking at the same thing that you’re looking at and we’re watching the same thing and people talk about Charles and Shaq and Ernie for what they do on TV and yourself but I’m talking about as good a human beings as you’ll find well I try you know I take shots every now you know I take all out never know who’s watching I take all out that’s true Paparazzi leave that alone man I got caught some stray bullets Paparazzi I never been part of that but anyway I’m like what are you doing man I’m like I’m on the beach where you you be like I can’t go to the beach like Shaq is like why do you have your shirt off I’m like where do you else see you have your shirt off at the beach I don’t walk around La with my shirt walking anyway you know it’s interesting but for me like I I Feel Again like those guys are I I learned so much from if I so if I break it down from Chuck he gave me a voice gave me a voice to speak he talked about like after games he would people would ask us about how much points you how many points you scored they ask Chuck about social issues like what do you think about Martha Stewart what do you think about anything like they were just randomly in the middle of a locker room after a game and I was always envious to that because I thought I had an opinion too but I couldn’t get it out Shaq I learned business like I made more money outside of basketball based off of what the things he’ve told me him and Magic but now more him because I’ve been around him more magic was on our show for like two years same thing like I always was ask him how’ you do it you know how you How do you how do you own Forever 21 how do you own how do you own the rights to Mar Monroe like what do you do how did you get there to do it I don’t need part of it right now how’d you get there because you already did it so it’s always great to be around greatness because there’s another way of why they became great did you know we played on the same team when oh that’s right when we played on the Denver Nuggets together y was on the same like 25 games I remember living in Denver we literally we stayed out there for like a week and you don’t remember me on the team I it was like one week team tell about my stretch game no man so I had never played with them it was like the best 25 games ever uhhuh cuz we was just like freaking frat like laughing joking locker room bus plane it was a constant 25 game and I actually picked picked Denver because he was there yeah and I knew I was on my way out I was like I’m going to go to Denver cuz Mark’s there I’m going just have to like you know like I’m out I’m on my way out like I’m going just go have some fun and you know coaching stats was ridiculous it was it was crazy you know yeah young young fell at that time Antonio mcdice with Y right listen the worst scenario ever was the Denver Nuggets then the worst coaching staff I’m not talking about Bricker staff when Bricker staff left right right and I and and the next guy came in y’all can research it yourselves he don’t even worth getting to say it like the worst Cur listen look we had a game so first I’ll give you the story about when we play together that was fun but when you left so he gets traded after that I’m there 20 games he gets traded again back to Indiana so now I’m there by myself so we we now I’m in devor by myself and I’m like dang all right whatever I’ll make the best of it so we lose a game on Monday coach comes in oh ah see all that practice shoot around on next game I’m like shoot around next game we don’t play till Thursday so nothing Tuesday Wednesday nothing we just show up to shoot around and we in town you got a break so I’m going to all the young fellas I’m like yo this is not how it goes this is not the NBA I’m like they’re like what do you mean I’m like no one has three days off and he did that again we played Thursday see you next Friday so you know what I did I I I had an apartment in Denver I checked out the apartment I started Living in Houston again I was playing with the Denver Nuggets living in Houston so I would just fly back on game day I was just like yo he doesn’t we don’t practice we didn’t practice for the last half he was playing in Denver living where lived in Houston they people were like how are you doing this like what are you like I go to the restaurants and be like I’ll be eating and everything I work out and they be like yo what are you doing how you here you here all the time I’m like yo we don’t we never practiced but once after Allstar break that’s crazy one time I I’m like what am I paying for apartment I paying $10,000 you know rent all this what am I doing that for yeah like I’m checked out went back to Houston and on night before a game I fly back in get a get a uh get a hotel room then play after the game I fly out don’t let it be an afternoon game oh I’m back I might I’m back I’m back in htown baby oh I’m back I’m back that was the worst scenario ever play in demo but we played together 25 games and I don’t know how your dad made it how many years you play 17 I don’t know how he played 17 years in the NBA during his routine what what was the routine you know that’s why I want to hear let’s start with the diet be like yo I’ll be like excuse me can I order uh you know grilled fish you know brown rice veggies water little you know V I got all the vitamins and supplements laid out on the table I’m taking them one at a time you know Dr one he’s like can I get a cheeseburger fries extra cheese onion rings and a milkshake this is every pregame yeah he ate that this the truth right this the truth yeah he’s he’s he’s close milkshake so then we like all right all right I was like maybe you know he got through that so now I’m before the game I got the yoga poses cuz I had the I used to have like the tapes and I had the dude on the yoga guy showing me all the stretches and moving to stay this dude doing this I’m like Jack what are you doing he’s like warm it up I’m like yo you don’t stretch but n he never stretched for 17 years never stretched still don’t stretch that’s amazing I don’t know how he did it 17 years never stretched all he did was flap his arms excuse me all he did is flap his arms boom what’s the what’s the secret cuz yeah yeah that that that’s it there’s no way there’s no there’s no other explanation there’s no other explanation like there’s no one in the world has ever done that M I’ve never seen that ever you know 17 yeah two 1779 unbelievable before we get into today’s game I want to give a special shout out because I know the impact that your brother Vince has had on guys like me and guys in our neighborhood that made it in the NBA and were legendary yeah there was about 15-year span with my brother Vince you couldn’t have played in New York City without either working out with him or played for him he was the guy that everyone went to and he was a he’s a basketball Savant like he could see through walls you know like you if you working out behind that wall he going to be like oh hold your follow through he was one of those he’s one of those it was a super super famous entertainer man I’m like that I was like man that’s such and such I was at the airport and so I didn’t know if he knew me so I’m walking through he’s like yo yeah yeah yeah Ben Smith brother I heard Google I’m like yo they knew my brother didn’t know me that’s how my brother was the guy who trained the best of the best that’s crazy yeah all all the time from Lamar to Kenny Anderson to Ron test I mean the list went on and on anybody in that 15 years you had to you had to play for them or work out with them unbelievable didn’t you work out with them that’s what I was about to say I wouldn’t even limit his his reach to all of the success stories that we see the NBA players he’s impacted lives of young men that are countless I was literally in the studio for March Madness ay guy comes up and say yo I played for your brother Vince and he had he was bringing this Charter School of kids to the studio to see the studio like it his impact has been unbelievable you know behind the scenes and never this is the difference between Vince and now like people now my brother probably coached 20 NBA players including myself and never took a dollar from anybody not a dollar I sent my brother’s I was like yo how much you need one day he’s like what do you think want me a son I was like I’m just I’m made it to the league you know you know you know that mentality oh oh take care he’s like I’m not your son wow like yo just show up at Camp you know that’s real that was it so then I actually had to hire him I’m like yo I’ll hire you to look at my film and debate and break down every game at night that was the only way he took money from Wow only time and what you do with the aim high is incredible well aim high jet Academy aim high is like you know he started it my brother but and that’s where all of those players would play so I would fund the trips and they go all around the country now we on the ebl circuit have the best players in the world like it’s the same thing man but for me it’s just like a give back of what I always learn to do like Each one teach one and like we understand that we have to pass it on to the next that’s what we doing now here with the podcast that’s what you’re doing you know you giving it to the next Generation because there there is a how do I put it nicely there’s a generation of people who have no clue of their success and why they have it have no clue because I was a e-com major in North Carolina it’s always just a supply and demand because you make a 5 million 10 million 15 million doesn’t mean that you’re worth that it’s just the demand of that but how did that demand get created like so I see players today who have holes in their game millions of like my Millions a lot of holes in their games but they make $20 million and I have a saying it’s hard to work hard when you sleep in in silk robes so they they don’t understand that they’re not really that good and that’s what I hate when they go and I see podcast and they like oh this generation is that this generation of basketball players are very good individually and very good talent but also the globe TRS were well as well my wow this is no I can’t let you do this come on come back come back no no no I’m no no I got stand I got I can’t let you do that that’s crazy Demarcus haes can slide on the floor and dribble through his legs oh my goodness this dude said and and and and Goose given could throw it from half court the GL trying and metal loock lemon curly Neil curly Neil had to handle doing no I’m just I’m just saying so now you have to refocus of the thought like that is a very appealing to watch yeah but there’s a a content of Excellence that gets you the basket there’s a content of EXC no matter how many times I it always comes down to onew pullup yeah it comes down to one two can you do a onew pullup that’s it so I could have done all of that and just go onew pullup it it just comes down to that so their their ignorance look that way you ain’t got to tell me their ignorance of what it is wait let me say this they go let me say they go oh and it wasn’t athletic I’m like wait a minute Larry n is more athletic than Larry n Jr preach yeah you think about that you telling me that our era wasn’t athletic the the dad is more athletic than the son I’m with you but I got to I got to push back a little bit man it’s only only basketball basketball is the only sport that has this type of mentality because we don’t see Tom Brady and say oh he can’t be better than whoever any any all Johnny unit yeah he can’t be better than Johnny United he’s not getting touched like not he can’t be better than Joe Montana he’s not getting setch we don’t hear that we give Tom Brady his flowers but when it comes to basketball we constantly hear about oh it’s a comparison between today’s players and the players of the but I think that comparison started initially with us on salary it wasn’t skill level it was like yo these dudes are getting paid the the older School guys not even us cuz we we caught it like the generational wealth but they were like yo the salaries are crazy this guy’s not so that’s what they were talking about when they were comparing it then the new school said oh no we talking Talent we better than you I’m like bro no you’re not like you wouldn’t start on our team like you couldn’t start this is crazy gu argue with me I said Nick vanel Nick vanel is a max player of the day averaging 20 point Nick vanex will be a max player he’s a guy who can shoot the three I didn’t argue that I didn’t argue that I didn’t argue that Nick Van X was an amazing player and he probably will player so my my my my logic of today when I listen I look at it with I understand because you haven’t lived it you know you haven’t lived that moment when Michael Jordan was scoring the baskets so you can’t see it but I’ve lived the moment even when LeBron was playing Detroit and he had 20 I think it was 30 straight points I lived that moment I live the moment of what Joker is doing I understand all the moments but the skill level because you can shoot the ball from half court and it goes in doesn’t make you an impactful player it doesn’t and there are certain guys that can translate in each era for sure but there are guys who are average players that think that they would have translated to be great players and not was is insane it’s insane and I I got pull the I’m pull the horn out man man we I’m going pull up because like and they go well Kenny Kenny talks like sometime I get this Kenny talks like he was that guy I was that guy yeah no I was and yeah I’m G say this if there was a party that everybody who want a NBA championship I’d be at that party yeah comfortably comfortably if there was a party where everybody had backtack championships I’d be at that party too yeah if there was a party where everybody who won college basketball player the year I was basketball times player of the year in college basketball I’d be at that party if there was a party and they say the best 50 players of high school basketball that ever played McDonald’s All America sent me a ball like make voted me one of the top 30 I’d be at that party too so I’ve been out a lot of parties so like yeah I’ve seen a lot of people and I’ve seen the great people in those parties so you’re just average bro like you’re average yeah you average then you’d been average then this dude what are you drinking is that we s something you would been great you wouldn’t have been great cuz you could shoot the three what we would have covered you we would have guarded you at the three-point line man now and the average player in our era wouldn’t have been yeah let me take that back an average playing our error because of the rule changes could have been better because it’s a scoring lead now where you come with there was no Jack was there a term called two-way player when we played no if you didn’t play two-ways you couldn’t play there’s no such thing as oh he’s a two-way player because there were very few Specialists so like now you could be a specialist and get $15 million and you’re looking at your salary and say I’m good no you’re not yeah you’re just a specialist that shot the ball like no you didn’t can you imagine guys trying to guard you without being able to hand check you okay I threw the law I threw the law now I’m out the hand check rule is the single rule why I feel that players in that era would be better players it’s not because they worked harder or whatever it’s just the rule because when you play handshake right I could get up I could get up yeah I can stand up okay if you hand check it now last guest couldn’t okay hand that’s crazy that’s crazy let that go if you’re hand checking this is my camera this my C okay so he’s hand checking me I have to cuz he’s hand checking I have to turn this way yeah without the hand check I could face up here now I become a better passer cuz I have my peripheral is now at 75° where here it’s at 50 yeah I better pass her cuz I could see more I’m a better ball handler because I can play with it you can’t touch me I’m a better shooter because now my feet are squared up to the rim here I have to turn and it’s you can see me turn now I can hey and I can all right all right he’s still moving talking about I’m without the hand check it makes and when people and and this is no disrespect because these guys are great ball handers Steph Kyrie and all is great unbelievable but it makes them better James it makes you a better ball handler because you’re playing with the ball and no one’s touching you so now the stuff that you do in the playground that we grew up growing in a playground that’s the stuff you could actually do in a game now if you went to a playground game and saw Mark Jackson you saw myself you saw Kenny Anderson you saw shamard you saw all these guys from the erors that we come in skip skip You’ be like what the heck oh my but when you get in NBA you can’t face up so it’s a different era I need you to agree with me way you agreeing with him I’m just let him get up that’s our guess it’s different when it’s you I I know I’m going be a what is your what is your what is your what is your because you what is your what would be your beef I just want respect for both Generations I just want for like I I hear what you’re saying and I agree with you but then on the flip side I’m looking at it like okay then LeBron would be a better defender in 1995 because he would be able to hand check I’m saying great is great but you average dudes would have been average then too not talking about we’re not talking about the Le sing talking about average dudes let’s say the average dude there was benefits to y’all time as far as defensively I’m a better defense with y’all set of rules speci no no I’m saying you’re still a specialist you’re not a better Defender because you’re not a better Defender because you’re not standing in the corner guarding the guy in the corner fair enough you have to defend 94 ft yeah where now you have to defend 24 feet because there’s no ball pressure from free throw line to free throw line now in the NBA it’s and then then the two corners are just standing there because it’s now they want to do the Antics so your defense you would have been a better Defender cuz you couldn’t move I know the question I got to ask cuz you’re the perfect guest okay playing at North Carolina with Michael Jordan in the same back court in the same back court this what I this is what the people want to know it’s not even me I’m standing up for people at this moment could Michael Jordan go [Laughter] left this is what I’m dealing with this is the hypocrisy of idiotic that is going on right now today want to see Michael Jordan go left you haven’t heard we done with the ’90s no but listen what I’m saying help I’m messing with you I’m messing with Ser no I’m not serious I’m not serious you know what that would be like that’s like saying can Prince play the guitar that’s a great word like yeah he had people in the band that played it yeah but then that’s Michael Jordan man like Michael Jordan was the most complete basketball player that’s ever lived complete like Kareem was just as effective certain people could be LeBron at times could be just as effective but the most complete basketball player that ever lived is Michael Jordan completeness so like his ability to do every aspect of basketball at the highest level and I think that came from going to college because in college the best I’m glad you talking I said I said when he got to the pros he had no weaknesses yeah no weaknesses because what happens is what college does the best coaches are in college basketball because there’s more M the best ones are there so they design defenses and offenses that are different from the NBA so you learn how to play against a zone defense you learn how to play against a manto man 131 212 you know defense defenses NBA is just strict manto man but your philosophies and thought process is from a totality of all of those defenses so now the game is easier for you and you’re much more EAS what I always say about Michael which different between even the great Kobe Bryant and great LeBron James is he was still the most fundamental basketball player like LeBron’s IQ is crazy but the most fundamental when you watch LeBron you don’t always say he’s most fundamental yeah so correct hand in the passing Lane but that was Michael he was the best athlete and the most fundamental because he went to college for three years and developed certain things you know you know even I was laughing with my son he goes oh you know you were I saw you dunking in the league but you know you like three years of it I’m like cuz I had four in college yeah I would have never stayed in college for four years in today I was first team All-American I would have been on a draft board yeah so I would have never stayed that would it would it was just it was wrong to to leave like then it was like it was called hardship like it it almost meant you were broke like your family was destitute if you went to the NBA instead of going to college before they that was the stigma that they had on us so we would like everybody I ain’t going to college I ain’t leaving College yet I ain’t broke I ain’t like that I ain’t one of them dudes yeah so you stay so my bet I had four years when I’m jumping from the free throw line that was in college then I caught two two or three years in the so seven years so I’m like you just missed my most athletic years it was some of them were in college yeah Michael Jordan some those three years in college imagine he only went one year oh my God or none Michael Jordan most complete basketball y’all average dudes would have been average y’all would have been average you wouldn’t have been great you would not have been you you’re a specialist you might not have been in the league there are people that believe as crazy as it sound I’ve heard this and I’m sure you’ve heard it that there’s a dude in prison or a dude in the streets that that was better than Michael Jordan just didn’t get an opportunity there’s people that believe that listen man man that’s like saying there’s a dude in prison that could have done what Steve Jobs done don’t it’s not my opinion I didn’t say you I said AR heard that before the Bill Gates to Steve Jobs of basketball is there a guy in if he’s there I hope he gets out but but that guy depends on what he did depending on what he did depending on what he did I hope he gets out hope it was like a Mr be cuz like that’s what what it be like I hope he gets out because that dude I don’t know where he is I there’s no one like that he is the most complete basketball player and then there’s two there’s two yeah most effective like LeBron James is effective he can impact the game you know but I I I just don’t think defensively is where that’s the separation to me MH is where defensively we used to run I don’t know y’all did this we used to run plays right we go okay Rudy be our coach Rudy T be writing on the board he’s like okay we’re going to run five but if Michael’s on the right side we on the left like all right say it one time right think it’s a joke so I’m like I’m in my mind I’m I know I know Michael is Mike so I’m still listening as he’s still my boy kind of and he goes okay and we’re going to run uh 21 but if Michael’s on the left side we going to run and he go down each play and say where Michael was and we’re going to run running on a different side that’s the impact defensively had I did they do that I don’t know absolutely I that’s the part that even when I talk to coaches they don’t say that he has that impact LeBron has the same effect on the offensive end that Michael has because it’s passing rebounding but on the defensive end that’s where that’s the that’s the caveat that separates it amen cuz you think the go is heyen oh no no no no the the gold is still LeBron I hear you I’m what t look at you putting the battery in the back I’m sitting back what Mak what makes him what makes him y the today cuz I have the same argue with with my yeah that’s what I need your help because the Legacy that y’all leave for Jordan saying that he was 6 and0 in the finals is true but y’all discredit the fact that he lost other times other than making that make see I don’t L that is a that’s that’s a statistical thing that the other people I told you we from New York we look perfield too okay so then we’re saying this mhm if there’s a game and we’re playing three on three in the park there’s a different impact that Michel I agree but I’m with you it doesn’t have anything to do I’m with you on that it doesn’t have anything to do do they do this let me say this this y’all we used to do this on on the bus we go all right it’s F it’s 10 seconds to go the ball’s at one end line and you got to get the last second shot who’s going to who you going to take the last second shot but you can’t put Mike in this right we would say that you can’t put him in this talk I guess it comes down to I because I hear what you’re saying I guess it comes down to if I want one game give me Michael but why goat because if we talking about the goat then how do you just discredit LeBron’s Legacy no we not discrediting but if it if you take it down to one game then you take away Lebron’s biggest benefit in the argument which is his longevity no his longevity but each game I need one game in that year I one game in that year I’m going with Michael I need one game in that 21 year career every year I would be like give me Michael give me Michael that year give me Michael that year give me like that yet and this isn’t a shot we say this with great respect and admiration for what he’s been able to do but there’s only one answer it’s only be it’s just LeBron is I’ve never seen anybody the long to play this high level this long I’ve never seen that that is the the that is the goat of longevity yeah like because the high level that he’s playing at but the best basketball player if you take a 10 decade 10 years that ever existed Mike I’d wear I thought you had on Jordan’s if you had on Jordans today I was going just really no no I love I love Mike I I think that it’s it’s him and him and LeBron at the top depending on who you want to pick I understand the difference in Generations why y’all say that Jordan is is the go yeah but also like even today like guys go oh well you know like the Lakers like right now in a playing situation and and he’s playing at a high level but being a 10 seed he take up water I got to drink I got swea he’s swea over there now I got him swea I got him swe this a crazy this a crazy right now I’m going Grace on this argument a nothing in the glass we got swe I wasn’t prepared for this we got a back man no but listen I would have looked at my LeBron stat you think about it like you’re at the point where it’s just I don’t care how great he the longevity is like he’s a 10 seed right now A N Seed I wasn’t that great a play as LeBron I’m not even there’s only one team I’ve ever been on that wasn’t in the top 10 even when I was the best player I looked at up I was like dang I would have made the play in in Sacramento I would have made the playing like that’s crazy like we were terrible yeah like and we I would have made the play in I was the best player on a bad team and we would have made the play in so like LeBron is great Kobe Bryant is great y’all average players would have been average that ever that’s all I’m say y average players man that’s all I’m going say man you know oh man you can’t CH listen if I’m our exed colleagues in this show you don’t think mace and cam could rap today if they were 17 yeah yeah they kill it yeah they still Mason cam like you know what I mean they still the same them like it’s them that’s fair but the average rappers from that today yeah would come back and they would be average today he called me one time with a a good a very good NBA player and the NBA player believed he was better than Jordan he was killing I’m not going to name the dude’s name he’s a good player why you not going to name I’m not I’m GNA Let Him Live I’m GNA let him live but he called me I like this dude think he’s better than Jo Uncle KY you want to say his name no I’m going let him but I’m just saying like today’s era of people they they always like oh we more athletic I don’t believe in more athletic I I’m how many point guards been in a dunk contest yeah I was in the dunk contest three times came in second once the great Dominique Wilkins I don’t see a lot of point guards and you’re not more athletic yeah no I I don’t think so there’s a lot of athletic guards are you more skilled I don’t believe so do you have better tricks no you just have tricks that invoke this dude is killing everybody this is crazy no you haveck get it get it no you have tricks that are invogue yeah like when we were coming up to killer crossover Tim Hardway that was in Vogue yeah now it’s it’s the Stepside step you know it’s just a different movement yeah great players today would been great Kevin Durant would have came in our era and been great go down the line top five five players but then it gets a little little sticky it get starts to get sticky yeah and that’s all I’m saying it starts to get sticky because of the rule changes so guys who were in The League now would not be in the league that’s all and even some of the guys that we had wouldn’t be in this leag because they couldn’t shoot but some of those guys who think that they are Michael Jordan bro you would have came off our bench like so so so so final word for the average player you would have been average you average right now you just getting paid more now like our average guy was getting like 800,000 you’re getting 8 million that’s it but you would have been average you still would have been average you wouldn’t have won the college basketball player of the year you wouldn’t have been drafted fifth you would have been still drafted in the second round like come on man got some names in your mind you know he does he’s not going to let him live though listen I I got social media just like y’ I start laughing why would have been killing no you wouldn’t have you would have killed in that era he average oh man let’s give a shout out to our sponsors Underdog fantasy click the link in the description below and use the promo code Mark play the pick them game man that’s our favorite 1. Kenny came to show y’all why he should’ve had your seat nephew lmao and Mark wild for that stray he shot, “Our last guest couldn’t get up” 🤣 mark def from ny

  2. Finally, thank you Kenny Smith and Mark Jackson, setting it straight, just cause kids these days can shoot 3's they think they can go against teams of the past. Hahaha !

  3. I was messing with y'all until I heard this. Y'all know we got people locked up that's genius then the people we see on TV.

  4. Longevity doesn't make you the 🐐!!! I'm the same age as Kenny Smith so I've been able to watch the full careers of both Michael Jordan and LeBron James and while LeBron is a great player, he's NOT better than Jordan! It's not even close!!!

Using the example of Tom Brady doesn't work because he isn't the GOAT because he played a long time! No, he's the GOAT because he's the GOAT!!

  5. MJ played both ways LeBron played defense for two or three years Mike played defense his whole career and Mike was the best player on the court LeBron hasn’t been the best player in the league for 8 years

  6. I hadn’t watch basketball for the past 10 years up to the beginning of this year. I have been playing ball at the park all the time. But I didn’t get the hand checking rule changed, I was calling people weak and having bad bad defense. But it is the new rule smh. Then when you shoot or make a good play. We would say MJ on a fade away, or Kobe on a tough contact shot. When do we ever call out Lebron. I mean even in present day Curry name has came up more than Lebron on impactful plays. But he is called the goat in today’s game. I came up where defense wins game. The goat in the same era that Durant is in. Are we watching basketball or just listening to people that don’t ball lmao. Thank you for this podcast!

  7. The athleticism conversation is nonsense because the human body doesn't evolve at the rate these kids think it does. In athletics, Maurice Green ran the 100m in 9.79s back in 1999. Noah Lyles, the fast man today, his fastest time is 9.79s. That's despite advances in nutrition, training, 'gear' and kit.

There have been a few anomalies like Bolt and Blake, but that does not translate to more athletic individuals across the board.

You can apply the same logic to basketball as well. There are a handful of guys today that are genuinely better then their 90s predecessors. But that's talking about the field. They're most certainly NOT better than the 90s elite players like Mike, Shaq, Kobe and Hakeem.

  8. 1. LONGEVITY IS NOT A BASKETBALL 🏀 SKILLSET THAT YOU PRACTICE ON THE BASKETBALL 🏀 COURT THAT MAKES YOU A GREAT BASKETBALL 🏀 PLAYER!

  9. MARK,
    1. YOUR SON’S CONCERN IN THE NBA THAT DOES NOT EXIST IN THE OTHER PROFESSIONAL SPORTS.
    2. HE NEGATES THE SOURCE THAT CREATED IT KNOWN AS THE PROPAGANDA MACHINE, KNOWN AS LE-NARCISSIST JAMES & HIS GASLIGHTING MARKETING MACHINE KLUTCH SPORTS!
    3. THIS BEHAVIOR DID NOT EXIST IN THE NBA BEFORE HE WANTED “TO ELIMINATE M.J. # 23,”
    4. SO HOLD LE-FLOP RESPONSIBLY FOR THIS BEHAVIOR,
    5. THE DECLINE OF THE NBA,
    6. LACK OF COMPETITION,
    7. CREATING SUPER TEAMS
    8. BEING A LEECH SUCKING THE GREATNESS OF OTHERS TEAMMATES TO SELF PROCLAIM HIMSELF!

  10. Thats their only argument the Longevity because the 13 season of MJ's all time scoring is way beyond the 13 season of lebron. Even if you add the 2 grandpa season of MJ still way beyond the SCORING title versus lebron. And when it comes to SHOT selection majority of lebron's shot where taken 2-5 feet away from the rim and MJ shoot way far than lebron WHY?? Because before the bigs dominated the league and not just average bigs but hall of famer bigs. So you gonna get hammered from 2-5 feet away from the rim and your so called LONGEVITY if brought back in the 80's – 90's would've not been possible. Lebron will retire same as the other greats back then if not earlier coz of injury. And without the scoring title coz of Longevity and coz theres no "PROPER" Defense nowadays, lebron will just become Semi-special NOT Super-special like what he is projecting now. The league is soft now even average player has LONGEVITY 😂😂😂

  11. I dont know what these old farts are smoking. A player that can play at all 5 positions, with GOAT level IQ, GOAT level rim protector, and can take over the game at will. All that without any college experience. Old farts be cappin

  12. Kenny is 100% right how he and Ernie changed the whole Sports Media industry. Kenny paved the way for all NBA players to be Sports Media figures and have the freedom to be themselves on camera.

  13. LeBron has 0.89 offensive rebounds! His rebounds have no offensive impact!

I would never pick LeChoke or LeFlop over MJ the GOAT

  14. When MJ was playing, everyone knew they were watching the greatest ever. There was no GOAT debate. When someone passes him, we'd all know it. You wouldn't need professional debaters to try and make a case for that player, as they do in Lebron's case.

  15. Alot of these youngsters have no idea how SOLID of a PG Mark Jackson was. Tough, efficient, consistency, smart, and unselfish. Highly fundamental player. He played on 2 teams that were supposed to win championships if it wasn’t for MJ and those bulls. Knicks and Pacers. Mark was a guy that was a coaches dream to coach.

  16. when they changed the game rules just to ease scoring, that is what killed it. if the rules were the same then you can have an argument for the new generation.

  17. imagine Jordan worried about stats and 3 points shooting. Imaging Jordan for 22 years. Lebron ain't that . he can stay long in the league break the records just because he stayed longer not because he is that good. people even forget that Lebron has also the worse stats. like all time turnovers leader, etc… Kareem stayed in the league almost the same as Lebron but Kareem he ain't having all those bad stats.

  18. Brady does hear about how soft the league is now but he also has the most rings & played the longest ..

  19. Kenny needs to go to Gil’s Arena & check Gilbert on his BS takes & those role players Nick young & mccants & Jennings
