Finnish President Alexander Stubb On Trump’s Approach to Russia and Ukraine | Amanpour and Company
Can I just first start by asking you what was your conversation like when you met President Trump and spent hours golfing with him and talking to him um you know in in March I think it was what did you say to each other that gives you I clarity or maybe confidence about NATO and the transatlantic alliance. Yeah. I guess the starting point is to say what happens on the golf course stays on the golf course. No give you context. I mean so basically on a golf course a lot of it is of course social but it did give us an opportunity to discuss a few issues. Of course we talked about bilateral things. So Finland and the US we talked about NATO and at the time we also talked about Russia’s war of aggression in uh in Ukraine. So it’s normal sort of diplomatic discourse that you’re able to do in these kinds of situations. And I guess this is the job of presidents to try to influence each other and have have conversations. I do say one thing though, there is nothing so far that I have heard uh from the president or the president’s administration or people around him which would sort of reduce the commitment of the United States to NATO. Quite the contrary, the Americans are pushing the Europeans and the other allies to take more responsibility, and I think the Americans are right for doing it. You know, that that’s fine. But, you know, I’m going to get back to that in a minute. but also President Trump um you know after a certain period of of reaching out to Putin trying to draw him in with honey if you like u kind of blaming President Zalinski for all of this. He he appears to be having a change of heart at least publicly after the Vatican meeting and I believe you were sat next to President Trump during the funeral the whole alphabetic thing. He said there was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns. Makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war. He’s just tapping me along and has to be dealt with differently. Then in the last 24 hours, JD Vance said, “Russia is quote asking for too much in concessions.” Do you think they’re having a I don’t know, a moment of clarity, a change of heart? Well, I think you know peace negotiations and negotiations about ceasefire are always very complex and there’s always a road that you take and you have different steps on the road and I think in the beginning the Americans rightly tried to convince the Russians to join the negotiating table but now I think the response that we’re seeing from Russia is haphazard or actually negative and now a lot of the American administration is rightly saying that time is running out and that’s why I think actually um we should go for an immediate ceasefire. The Americans have uh suggested it. The Ukrainians have agreed to it. The Europeans support it and the only one who doesn’t want peace actually is Russia. I actually think the Americans want peace more than anything else. And now the tactique might be changing a little bit. And how do you see it playing out then? I mean, we’re speaking in the context of Russia uh having its, you know, its own VE day, remembering the great war as they call it. Um, President Xi has come to stand shoulderto-shoulder with President Putin on the reviewing stand in the Kremlin. Um, actually, President Lula is expected there of Brazil as well. Um, but the Xi Putin thing is a very clear message. I mean, they have a bridge. They have presented themselves to an extent as a kind of anti-US anti-western axis and they clearly are looking for some space to jump into if the US abandons global leadership. Just describe what you think Russia and China are up to. Well, it’s difficult to say. It’s a little bit of a back and forth. You have to remember that in the early 1990s, uh, the Russian and Chinese economy were the same size. Now, China is over 10 times bigger. And to be very frank, Russia is extremely dependent on China, whether economically, technologically, or militarily. So, of course, China plays the geopolitical game and has one hand and one card uh in the pocket of Putin. Um, as far as victory day is concerned, I think it’s very symbolic obviously uh for the Russians, but I think it should also be very symbolic for the Ukrainians and for us uh that promote western values. So I think at this stage we really need to move forward with trying to make sure that we get this ceasefire and then start the peace negotiations. But there is a bigger geopolitical game being uh held here. And I think of course anytime there’s a power vacuum, someone is going to fill it. And China is trying to do that at the moment. And I of course vote for the Americans to stay as engaged as possible. [Music] [Music]
As Europe celebrates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Ukraine is still under brutal Russian attack. And while President Donald Trump vowed to end the war in 24 hours, three months into his second term the negotiations have stalled. Christiane speaks with a man who might have some insight into Trump’s tactics: Finnish president Alexander Stubb. He spent time on the golf course with Trump in March and was seated next to him at Pope Francis’ recent funeral.

Flip flop president L
Thank you Christian Amanpour from Sterling Heights Michigan
Trump is an idiot.
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize the Russians are playing with Trump. And I am not a diplomat.
I just lost a lot of respect for a Finnish president who would stand anywhere near that orange bastard.
How much cheating did moron do on the golf course?? 🤔
trumps foreign policy is haphazard at best. he swings wildly from one stance to another.
Trump getting a moment of clarity after being played by Putin? Most of us were no fool to Putin's intents and war crimes. Zelensky knows best.
The Finnish, German, and Canadian leaders – brains and diplomacy
There are no "moments of clarity" with Trump, there are only moments of opportunity – for self-benefit, self-enrichment, self-aggrandisement. Altruism, the greater good – not ever in Trump's equation.
Trump’s unpredictability may play well in U.S. politics, but in Eastern Europe, stability is life or death. Stubb’s message is subtle but clear: leadership isn’t about bravado — it’s about balance.
Look into the 1939 finish Soviet war, a tiny little country holding off a quarter of Russia's army, it's unbelievable, without incredible determination there would be no Finland
Its not about peace. It's about terms. The waffle responses are disturbing
I completely disagree with the guest speaker. This propping up of Ukraine when they've already lost is ridiculous.
From CNN, February, 2024: "As president, Trump privately threatened multiple times to withdraw the United States from NATO, according to The New York Times. Trump has described NATO as “obsolete” and has aligned himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who wants to weaken the alliance. Trump has long praised Putin and went as far as to side with the Russian leader over the US intelligence community over Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election." Trump is viewed differently, and VERY diplomatically by Stubb……..but anyone with an objective viewpoint has zero trust in the transactional convicted felon. He could pull the US out of NATO tomorrow and surprise no one.
Thank you Mr. Stubb for your effort. Talking to a dangerous toddler like Trump and not shouting at him when he spouts his dumb nonsense is incredibly hard.
PBS = Propaganda Bullsh-t System. Amanpour = The queen of socialists communists misdirection, rhetoric and bullsh-t coached in an english accent with occasional sparks of witty banter to prove her teleprompter intelligence.
He played golf with f*ing Trump? Wtf
Any ceasefire means that EU/NATO/USA will arm Ukraine to the teeth.
EU is continuosly shifting the blame onto Russia when the majority of the world is aware why Russia attacked Ukraine (Jeffrey Sachs, Mearsheimer & others have iterated this umpteem times).
If EU leaders are so intelligent, they just require to negotiate face-to face with Putin.
Truely great developments.
US Neocons start in Ukraine another of their endless proxy wars
and then leave the mess and costs to the Europeans.
And then move on the next war with Iran.
Ensuring they have well paid bureaucrats as Stubbs to run the show for them.
President Stubb’s take on Trump’s strategy is fascinating—could this signal a major shift in how the West handles Russia? What if the key to peace isn’t just strength… but a unexpected twist in diplomacy? What’s your theory.

Remember that Tramp said he was going to end the war on day 1. No matter how bad it turns out, Tramp will claim victory.
Playing golf? Hey,trump the world is on fire and you were going to walk on water😂.!
The problem with Amanpour is that her biases are showing. A true journalist will not take sides but explore both. Unfortunately such journalists are far and few between.
so you were golfing with trump. did you talk about greenland, mr. vegas?
Sanna is kind of not yours.
CIVILIAN?
AFTER WHAT SHE HAS DONE?
ARE YOU MAD?
ONCE YOU DO WHAT SHE HAS DONE YOU ARE NO LONGER A CIVILIAN.
I FOGAVE HER, BUT SHE IS A EVIL PERSON.
WE FOUGHT A WAR AND NOW NO ONE WANTS HER CLOSE TO THEM.
DONT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE?
NO YOU WILL CLAIM SHE WAS A CIVILIAN?
That's fine…but lets get back to blaming Trump
PBS…muh
God, i dont have patience for this.
Let's be real, Christianne. In Russia, leaders cannot lose a war, and in all due respect to President Stubbs of Finland, President Putin wears the face of a Russian leader who sees the writing on the wall at any mention of a cease-fire after a million Russian soldiers have died or have been wounded in an invasion that history books will show as the most incompetent and ill-thought-out incursion into another country in world history. Trump is all talk and only in it to fill his deep pockets deeper, unashamedly, America's ex-con of a President has personally made over 300 million dollars on his meme coin, his sons have collected more than 2.5 billion dollars from crypto coins and all this in 100 days in office. What we have to realize is that the minute President Putin signs a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine, before the ink has dried, he will be tumbling from a 3rd floor window of his 2-billion-dollar mansion on The Black Sea.
Masterclass diplomacy.
Speech: 100
Dollars to doughnuts he's now invested in t rump's meme coin
50 countries and their puppet master USA 🇺🇸 proxy Ukraine 🇺🇦 against Russia 🇷🇺 and they lost 😝🤪😜😛
Imagine if America had a President this intelligent.
Thats ❤ our great President! We are so proud of him! Congrats Mr President, love from Finland ❤
