Thanks for watching!

okay some people call it the back cave others call it the nuclear bunker but it is really the golf lab here at Cal State Fullerton with Scott Lyn how’s it going all right so Dr Scott has uh set this area up worked with he’s had a lot of tour players in here recently College golfers and regular golfers like me as well so uh what we did in an earlier video was we saw the importance of a more efficient breaking pattern right and uh we used some tools so we’re going to in this video we’re going to get straight into it we’re going to do some bounding we’re going to do the slideboard and then we’re going to hit drives all right before I’ve hit no drivers today last week I was uh hitting driver my best of the day was 163 and uh Club head speed about like 111 or something like that uh we’re going to see if in this really short time frame about uh 30 minutes we’ve made any change uh that would actually be meaningful so maybe some bounding first or sure yeah whatever you want you like the bounding first yeah I think so okay so just try to feel like when you land everything’s kind of on top of that foot you’re not kind of using that as the kickstand show because I think people do this if they do it by themselves wrong so show you mean by a kickstand it would be like yeah so if if if you feel like if you take a slow motion and if I land here but my legs way out here okay like that’s pushing me back easily so I want you to land land kind of like this yeah and then push back so it’s like you might want to try to jump not quite as far like put less gas into the system because the more the further you jump the more you have to there you go yeah it’s more about the speed of bouncing off of it there you go good yeah that feels more golfish to all right now we’re do our slide board here he hasn’t died yet on this thing now Scott you’ve worked a lot with baseball players who are golfers and hockey players who are golfers if you had to choose without putting your personal biases into it what would who would you say hits it further in general baseball players or hockey players I would probably say hockey players um in terms of pure speed yeah baseball players would probably be better golfers overall handicap wise I would say but P speed pure speed I don’t know it’s hard to say I mean I’m I’m always looking at now like if you think a hockey shot is more like a frontal plane kind of move yeah where a baseball swing is going to be a little more transverse plane kind of move and and a golfman can be done either way right if you think Matt coocher is more of a transverse playe Guy where Jim furck could be more of a frontal playe guy so you can make it happen either way um my theory though is a lot of the good golfers um are old hockey player a lot of good hockey players who are now golfers are or good golfers are older because we used to use wood sticks now they use these composite sticks where the goal is actually to hit the ice about a foot behind the puck and flex it and then when it rebounds off that Flex it goes rebounds off that Flex so I’m I’m thinking this generation of hockey players when they become golfers when they retire are going to be hitting a lot of fat shots be struggling their aim Point won’t be here it’ll be okay could be trouble so I’m I’m guessing baseball players might get a lot better okay but I don’t know that’s just a hypothesis based on the technology change all right so people haven’t seen this in this video yet this is something that is used for all different sports but I think originally you see a lot of hockey people doing this in the offse or whenever okay so what I’m trying to do is similar to that one is is push off of this take my time on this side but then bounce off that as quickly as possible okay and try not to reach for that you just want to hit it and get off good good you got to get off that faster good good okay when he gets on TV that’s why I think it’d be super cool to have like a like you know when you like a shot clock almost in front of you here as soon as you hit it and bounce back it’ll show you like 0.3 seconds like I want it less 0.2 seconds whatever do you think I was wondering do you think this would be better worse or the same if this was just flat straight up I don’t know make it backwards so you hit into this side turn it around so you hit the flat Edge yeah I think that would be could try it all right let’s see what speed you got in you getting onto and off of that lead side all right thin but the club head was kind of fast we’ll give you a few to get warm oh it’s fast 112 six 113 I’d say up yeah he’s been thinning them yeah a little better James was in there we go new ball speed now yeah 164 that’s your highest yeah so so that’s my highest of the last yeah that that’s a mile faster than last week and if I could make that draw that would that a lot onto and off that side same head speed that should be faster though in the ball cuz it drew 64 64 again yeah good I bought that from Ultra slide it was like 200 bucks or something not too bad what’s that not too bad no the bumpers too yeah the bumpers it comes with a little the B the little booties it comes with nice and it comes with this little spray that makes it slipperier if you want to ah faster ahead yet but see where that went Mike oh I got it it 63 again all right so I’m living up near my Peak I just got to I think that one if you hit the middle of the face that would have been that was hit nicely I’ll hit some more but that was like six shots or so and they’re all like 163 yeah basically so let’s look at the forces and then we’ll do some more interventions and then we’ll try to and we’ll use John’s help a little bit to straighten this out here yeah 64 64 63 62.6 so pretty good and then Club you said 111 was your max before like 1133 you hit two times 112 two times so like your slowest was 11.7 which yeah if that was your fastest before that’s interesting all right and let’s look at the forces it looks way more efficient yeah I’m getting way up into the almost getting my torque into the toy range which is new and then we’re getting to that Peak Peak break Peak break right around impact and the first couple you had and the good thing is now you’re getting here when the vertical is peing as well MH so your vertical is peeking kind of around the side time that you’re braking is peeking so the timing is getting better if you remember one of your first Iron shots earlier the ball had hit the net already by the time that breaking AC yeah it was very soft in the lead knee yeah yeah and so I think Mike commented on how much space you have here um which is interesting to me how that’s changed and I feel like I don’t know but like to me this this is going to necessitate less side Bend yeah I’m still maybe doing it by Hab it but you might not need as much and what we notice is the ball launch pretty low on a lot of these yeah so that might have been your old way of getting in the air with side bending and if you break better and you don’t need the side Bend anymore you might have to add a little LOF to your driver yeah um that might be something that you uh that you need to change with the new uh mechanics but pretty good John let me ask you so how do you think I can start incorporating this golf wise to to like because I think that that’s definitely good to get on and off my my lead side but like if I want to be able to do that at speed like what do you think are some of the things I should do either thought- wise or drill wise to because I’m still a little bit all over the face and low on the face let me just watch you from behind yeah and I’ll I’ll video you CU I need cuz you’re so so fast I can’t like just see it with my naked eye yeah right that is all right so that’s super typical on the course and in here it’s like is that off the heel in the yeah I’m living in the heel okay let’s look at your video okay kind of looks like your arms are going out that way a little bit which can be good for Fades but just when you generally when you do that you’re going to have the club arrive a little bit too far that way so and you’re seeing the arms going like over a little bit they’re going to go like there’s more out than down Okay so let’s let’s work a little bit more down okay so there’s out and there’s down right so it’s feel a little bit more down okay what was the path on that one Scott 41 in out oh sorry out in yeah yeah so it look like you were this way yeah so I want you to feel like you’re you’re letting your arms come down your like your left arm is going to come down your chest line yep almost almost as though you were hitting a like if you’re a left-handed tennis player you’re can to hit it down the line with Top Spin for now if you’re a left-handed tennis player here’s a left-handed forehand there’s a left-handed backhand two hand down line with TP yeah like that yeah so yeah like that yeah okay so left arm is going to go down the body more don’t open up quite so fast okay that should draw yeah wow what was the path on that how the longest one by far2 okay just keep doing that uh that was where was the path was Zero 0.2 okay can’t get much better than that here you go no I think I think times you blasting so hard this way like trying to get open early yeah I think I think once you get here and you can go like that harder CU you have something more to go up if it’s just kind of gliding it’s kind of hard to push you didn’t have that’s why kind of I’ve never understood the stall thing that talks about you’re stalling right it’s like don’t you have to stop you do have to stop yeah it’s like okay so let’s go into the forces again and then I’m going to I’m really going to try to put up a good number with some not like I have them in but but I’m to go to that last most recent swing okay the verticals look way more efficient yeah there we go still in the heel a little bit but but but path was really good so yeah but you got a you had a a a personal best 28% that’s the highest you’ve had Max breaking Max breaking yeah and that was the highest Club speed I think 113 and a half I think you got to yeah ball speed was still good 162 like right on your my new high average yeah new high average yeah looks good so I’m really going to try to Inc that was a good shot though I mean look at that yeah that’s functional play that all day 290 carry yeah launch is good spin maybe a little bit low yeah I think so too yeah well I think this is this is nine and it’s open a little bit so I think there’s like the ball could be there we go uh Scott so that was left but it was 165 oh wow that was a little better was the path path was 22 out to in 2.2 what path should I be going for John do you think is zero or no in my feel should I be feeling two degrees in out that just go with this one this you’re have the hand this way up and left yes this feel like your hand pulling on this instead of this oh okay that yeah like this that be okay all right it was 113 you caught it 166 oh wow all right now we’re cooking that’s yeah fast good path some face figure out well I like when I do the two to there I feel like I’m less open earlier and I also feel like there’s more space here when I go like this now I feel a little crowded I’m like trying to like biased person would get way more top their swing yeah that was a better smash yeah so left they’re already there right they’re not there yeah and they got to get there 0 Z 165 so it depends on how that’s much lower though yeah yeah you’re right though I think it’s a fitting thing too Mike because it’s three 3.9 degrees up and it’s still coming out pretty low see I always didn’t like the left so I I would set this thing up open let’s go with this we’re just just we’re going to go just totally opp Opposite High lofted draw setting yeah okay because that’ll give you the most Lo okay there you go oh yeah look dead shut no okay almost it’s higher I know that’s much higher trolling that was nice that on the line yeah that was straight that was going one yeah give some time rep it out watch that that’s a good ball yeah that probably be my last one cuz that was good 163 okay cool all right that last one Scott was I’m really pushing off the right hard huh you’re getting a big push off the right we don’t quite have the brakes to do that have the brakes so I think it’s you’re getting 26 but it’s still kind of late kind of later than we were earlier I think there’s some fatigue introduced right and what I tell a lot of people is sometimes if the brakes are inefficient I work to turn down the Gas cuz if I put you in your car and I told you you your brakes only work to 60 M hour and you start going 80 yeah you’re going to freak out right and I think that’s where a lot of this kind of like if you see how kind of bumpy and crazy you’re yeah that’s you kind of freaking out because you put a lot of gas into the system and you just know your brakes aren’t there to handle it yeah and so if we go back I don’t even know where these were some of the ones that were um the best ones there’s a 65 ball speed um no that one wasn’t it so you can see here this one um was an earlier or this was the one of the last ones you hit where you have 25% push off Force so you’re like way above the tour average here then you’re only able to put on the brakes 26 it kind of like and you can see how shaky it kind of gets down here and then if I go back to an earlier swing you can see now you’ve dropped how much you’re pushing off so you’re only 22% push off and now you’re able to get 30 % breaks so you’re able to break it easier when you put less into the system got um and this one was I think one of the fastest ones you had I mean this was a uh 64 ball I think you got to 65 on one of them 66 once 66 so we’ve set some new records there um and again this is this is not an intervention that I would expect to work really well yeah right right away like it’s going to take some time working on this to to get your nervous system us and you like um you like when you’re doing something for to be in a setting where you can do your workout thing and then hit some shots like ideally yeah I don’t think there’s any problem with that I think it’s good to kind of feel get that feel and then try a few shots and hit it um but I don’t think it’s awful for you to not have it be able like just doing that more often and having your nervous system react to that exercise and hopefully that leak sober into your swing yeah I think it it it can’t hurt that’s for sure cool all right well you guys can try this as well yourself we’re going to be having a B better golf swing Catalyst golf school coming up in Southern California we’re making the arrangements and the dates for it now uh setting up the everything for it if you go to B better golf.net school that’s where I’m going to put up all the information about where it’s happening and what’s going on with it and everything so send me an email at contact be better golf atgmailcom send me an email there to be the first one on the list all right talk to you later bye

  1. I know this session was a continuation from last week, but it would have been great to see the before and after with the bounds and slide. Personally I know I found for me when I want to hit a draw with my driver I always felt like I had to stay back behind the ball. It's just a feel, but I would imagine that's just me braking better to get around the corner.

  2. Nice video – unique! Excellent combination of info. Also, to add something, 3 mph increase in ball speed would increase carry distance approximately 6 yards. I’d take that!

  3. LOOK>>>>>>>>>>>>>you start with your hands close to your body and when you arrive at the ball there is NO SPACE< so you have to STAND UP to get out of the way!!! simple fix!!!

  4. Although I wear a hat when I play golf I’m not sure why everyone in the video is wearing a hat indoors. Is it for advertising or just a habit?
