Comparing Waldner and Ma Long is like comparing Bach and Mozart. They’re both the greatest, but in very different ways.
Ma Long is arguably the most complete player the sport has ever seen. Physically dominant, lightning-fast, mentally strong, and technically flawless. He conquered an era of table tennis that’s faster, more regulated, and less forgiving.
But Waldner… Waldner was something else. He changed the game. He forced rule changes. He dismantled the Chinese dominance not with power, but with artistry, deception, and an almost unnatural calm. Watching him was like watching a chess grandmaster who just happens to be holding a paddle.
And think about it — how many foreign athletes are revered in China for beating China? That says everything.
So yes, Ma Long might’ve won 7 out of 10 in their prime. But Waldner made the sport what it is today. Calling one the GOAT feels like missing the point. They’re both legends — not because of what they won, but because of how they played.
A masterpiece versus a machine. And table tennis was lucky to have them both.

The two biggest table tennis players for me. Such icons both of them. Both are legemds in their own way. As a Swede i am so proud that we got to see such an amazing player as waldner in our little country😁

I read that Waldner was the reason they had to change the serve rules?
in their prime, assuming multiple matches/tournaments as opposed one and done, I'm giving the edge to Ma Long but they'd be closer to 50/50. When JOW is engaged he's invincible but I've seen enough of his matches to know that he can lose interest in a match and lose.
