The Golf Lesson That Made Tiger Woods Unbeatable

In the early 2000s, Tiger Woods dominated golf and he put on displays that we have never seen before. Now, in the year 2000, Tiger Woods and his coach at the time, Butch Harmon, went on TV and spilled some of the secrets that they were working on in his game. Now, after this TV appearance, Tiger then went on to win four consecutive majors. So, in today’s video, I’m going to break down what they went through and give you some easy to implement drills so you can play your best golf. What people don’t realize, and Tiger and I work on this all the time, especially when you’re in my studio in Vegas, is that so many things take place before you hit the ball that cause you to make bad swings. And the average player never even thinks about that. We’re always talking about posture, ball position, and grip. So, what’s Butch saying here? Essentially, that when you’re looking at your goal swing and you see all of the faults that you have, a lot of them can be traced back to a poor setup position. Make sure your grip’s correct, your ball position, your posture, your stance, your tilts. Get all of those things right first. And if you do that, your swing is going to take a far better shape. Take care of the small details and the bigger ones will become a lot easier. Now, let’s move on to the takeaway. Go. Let’s take a set up here and we’ll talk a little bit about your takeaway. We’re trying to get the club what you feel is a little earlier set. And the key here is just to keep the right arm higher than the left. So many people get this club as you do when you were younger tucked in on the inside. Now, let’s talk through what Tiger’s just said there and how it can relate to you. So, essentially, Tiger is trying to have a little bit of an earlier wrist set to get the club head working up faster and he also wants to see that trail arm be higher at this shaft parallel position. Now, why is this? Like he said, it’s because when he plays bad, he gets that club going inside. Now, this is one of the biggest faults I see on the lesson T every single day. So, if you’re a golfer who is struggling with an inside takeaway, then here are two drills that are going to help you fix that. The first one is called a steering wheel analogy. So, we’re going to get rid of the golf club and grab something that represents a steering wheel. Now, if you are having an inside takeaway, you’re going to see that you would be turning this steering wheel to your right as a right-handed golfer. Take a look at where my thumbs are pointing in front of me. If I turn it to the right, they now point behind me. So, the fix for this is that we actually want to exaggerate slightly the other way. Feel like you turn that Frisbee slightly to left or that steering wheel slightly to the left. And you can see that naturally gets that trail arm just a little bit higher and more in front of you. Once you’ve done that a couple times, retry it now with the golf club. Turn the steering wheel to the left and a presto. We’re in a better position. Now, the second exercise to help you achieve this position is the T drill. Grab a tea. put it in the butt end of the grip. As you take this club back, if you are rolling this club to the inside, you will see this tee points away from you. Instead, what we want to be seeing is as you take this club back, you can use a little bit of wrist hinge to get this club head working up. You can keep that right hand on top. And if you do that, the tea is going to be pointing back at you. And that’s the key as you’re doing this takeaway position. Feel like you can keep that tee pointing back at you towards your body. From there, round off the left arm. Make it a little flatter at the top left wrist. So, what Tiger is saying here is after the takeway, he then feels like he rounds the back swing off, getting his left arm and his left wrist nice and flat. This sets him up for a beautiful downswing position. Let’s use those same two drills and just build on top of them. So, let’s use the steering wheel drill again. So, in the takeaway, we spoke about turning that steering wheel slightly to the left. That’s going to help you get into a good takeaway position. Once the club goes past around shaft parallel to ground, you’re now going to gradually start to turn that steering wheel back the other way. The first half of the back swing is going to be turn the steering wheel to the left. The second half’s then going to be turn the steering wheel to the right. And this is what Tiger called rounding off. If I now do that same feeling with the club in my hand. So steering wheel to the left, steering wheel now to the right. You can see that produces that beautiful rounding motion to the swing. So let’s now talk about the second drill, the T drill, and how we can complete the back swing using this drill. What I want you to do is feel like you start to set the club upwards. So the T at left arm parallel can start to point at or just inside this alignment stick. Now this alignment stick here is on the ball to target line. So, I’m gonna go T at the body, left arm parallel. The T is going to point at or just inside of it. And as I then continue to the top, I’m going to imagine that this T is pointing all the way down this line. So, it stays on this line right there. On a quick side note, if you are enjoying today’s video, please give it a like and the channel a subscribe. Probably the biggest change that Tiger’s made is he’s really tried to get his hands in front of himself coming down. In other words, arms in front of the body where the club used to lay down somehow in your old swing when you used to get stuck. Olay swing. Yes. I go o I try and feel like my arms come down first and exit through the ball first. My hips don’t move. Well, really now he tries to hold his hips and get his arms in front of his hip motion. Now, that is completely different to what you’re hearing a lot of coaches preach. Essentially, this means that he’s getting his arms down in front. So then from there he can just push out of the ground and rotate. Why is this important for amateurs as well as Tiger? Well, Tiger in his heyday whereas a junior would try and get loads of distance. So he would fire his hips super quick. But for amateurs, they’ve been told to rotate open. They go to the top and they start to rip everything open. Well, this creates an over-the-top motion because they’re not sequencing their body correctly. So what are we supposed to be seeing? So, let’s start with the body because we’ve all been told that we need to start the down swing with the lower body first. Now, with the body, there can be three main movements that we’re going to be focusing on today. There is a lateral movement, a rotational movement, and a vertical movement. It is really important we get the sequencing of this right. So the very first thing that needs to happen is as we go to the top and just before we finish the back swing, we are going to start to shift laterally towards the target. Now we need to make sure that we get a good four to 6 in of shift in before we feel like we start to rotate and then once we’ve started to rotate then we push out of the ground. Where does the hands and arms come into this? The hands and arms fits into this when we are doing the lateral phase. And we’ve started to shift back towards the target before we finish our back swing. Now, we’re going to continue to shift laterally for a split second. During that split second, this gives us time to get our arms down in front of us. Once our arms are down in front of us, then we’re going to really put the burners on in terms of rotation. And then we’re going to put the burners on in terms of pushing out of the ground. So, think of it this way. You’ve got your lateral with your arms luring. That happens first, then your rotation, then you’re pushing out of the ground. Now, what was the drill that Butch gave Tiger? The drill I absolutely could not stand and I still can’t stand. Let’s see it then. Is that take the club up to the top and stop and then come down and hit the shot? The whole key was to get the club in a position at the top where he just felt as he transferred his weight, his arms would fall down in front of him. What Butch got Tiger to do was swing to the top of his back swing and then swing all the way through. Now, there’s a key pause at the top. What this essentially does is when you go to the top and you pause, you take out any momentum in your swing because you slow down to a complete hole. So from here, you’ve now got to generate speed the correct way. The way that the body’s going to want to do that is as you shift, you’re going to get your arms down, then you’re going to rotate, and then you’re going to push out of the ground. That is the most efficient way of generating speed from this position. And that’s why this drill is amazing because you can’t cheat it. The only way you can hit this ball solidly is if you do everything in the right order. To the top. Pause. Shift. Arms down, rotate, push away. Now, that drill is amazing, but I want to give you another version is a split hands pump drill. So, what you’re going to do is grip the club with your lead hand, hike it up so it’s in line with your toes, and you have a 90° angle created right here. Take your trail hand, hold the club 50/50 with the grip and the shaft, and your palm pointing away from you. You are going to turn to the top of your back swing. And as you start down, you’re going to shift laterally to your left foot. Feeling like you keep your hips closed. So pointing to the right of target and your shoulders the same pointing to the right of target. Now at the same time as you do this, you’re going to pump your arms down in front of you to the top shift. Feel like you keep your body closed. Shoulders come back relatively level. Arms are down in front of you. And get used to that feeling. Now, you’ll notice as I do this from the downline view how I’m able to shallow this club really nicely right here. Then from there, hit a shot with that feeling to the top. Shift laterally, feeling your body stay closed as your arms get down in front of you. Once they’re down in front of you, then you can rotate and push away from the ground. And that’s going to get you hitting the ball with a beautiful draw or just ultimately hitting the ball way better. So, as a quick summary, the key is that we have to shift and pull the arms down first, keeping the body closed. Then, we start to rotate and push away from the ground once the arms are in front of us. If you need more one-to-one help with your game, I offer online coaching on the Skillis platform.
