[Music] Hi there, it’s David John the Resourceful Coach. And what we’re going to talk about today is your level of expectation and how the TV coverage that you watch every week from the PJ tour is actually ruining your game. And I think this is really, really important to understand how the coverage is put on TV for you and how it really isn’t helping you at all. We’re going to give you some stats. Now, for me, the whole idea about my channel is to change your mindset about golf. Golf is about getting the results you need to play to a certain level. And we’re not going to talk technically about certain positions in your swing. We’re going to talk a little bit more about where the golf ball needs to end up. And why does this coverage actually on the TV hinder your game? Why is it not helping your game? And the main reason is they want to make it exciting and they want to show you the best shots possible. So, who do they follow? Well, each week they follow the winners. And that’s the key thing. And if we’re probably honest, apart from two golfers that we’ve come across in the last 20 years, every week it is just about the winners. And the winner each week, if we look at the modern tournaments, is on average 14 shots better. That’s three and a half half shots a round better than the average player on tour. So, that’s quite an important thing to understand. And the way golf has gone is we’re not seeing I mean we had a season last year with Scottish Shuffler where he won a lot of events. We’re not seeing people like Tiger Woods was winning winning six to 10 events a year. We’re generally seeing players maybe if they have a good season they might win three events. So what’s interesting when Tiger was winning he was actually winning on average by about 17 shots. That was the average that you would win by or you had to win by to win an event when Tiger was playing. It’s dropped now to about 14. So amazing. nearly a shot around less. But why is this TV coverage not helping you? As I said, it shows you the winners. And what happens is when you look at the data from the PGA Tour, and we’re standing here on the eighth hole at Corinthians, and we’re about 100 yards from the green. So, let’s give you some data. What’s the average distance a tour player will end up relative to the flag going into that hole from 100 yards? We’re looking around about 18 ft. Okay. 18 to 19 feet is the average distance. And from that position, they’re probably going to two putt that putt approximately. I mean, their chance of three putting is is under 1%. They’re going to two putt it high 90% and they’re only going to hold it probably a very small amount, around about 5%. But what happens to the winner? The winner is generally about half that distance away. He’s probably putting that ball within 9 ft. And because he’s the winner, he’s probably holding half of those putts from 9 ft. So that’s an important thing to understand. So you can see what’s happened. He’s increased the chance that he’s going to get down in two from this position by around about 45%. And that’s because he’s having a great week. That’s that’s the important thing to understand. So straight away, all you’re seeing is the guy from 100 yards, bang, stick it to 10 feet. You think, “Wow, I should be doing that.” Well, actually, you shouldn’t. Let’s look at my data through my videos. because we’ve got what I call the 12 shots of golf and we talk about three levels of player. We’re just going to focus really on two players. Okay? We’re going to focus on more the average golfers that we come across. The guys who are shooting 80 and 90. We’re not going to talk about the scratch golfer. So, what’s the average distance for a single figure golfer? Guys shooting 80. It’s more than double what a tour player on average would do. We’re up to 40 feet from the hole. So, you’re watching the golf and you’re seeing a guy shooting and winning the tournament, he’s putting it under 10 feet away and you should be averaging 40 feet to shoot 80. And if you’re looking to shoot 90, you should be about 60 feet away. So, can you see where the problem starts? All of a sudden, now you get this inferior complex because your brain is said, “Well, I’m not sticking it to 10 feet. I’m not as good as them.” Well, no, you’re not. The guy that wins the tournament is going to win pretty close to $2 million. You might win a voucher for your pro shop if you win the club medal. Okay? So realize these guys are that good. That’s what they need to be doing to win the event. If you want to shoot 90, 60 ft from the hole is great. But the reason why the TV coverage is the way it is is because it’s exciting. They want to show you the best shots. But what I would encourage you to do is yes, watch that coverage and please watch it because it’s enjoyable. But what we have in the UK on Sky Sports is we have a thing called featured groups from the PJ tour. So you switch it on on earlier on in the day, say like on a Thursday afternoon around 1 2:00 UK time, and they’ll be covering just two groups. And that might be Rory’s group, okay? It might be Scottish Shuffler’s group, but within that group, they show you those three players and it shows you all their shots and they play some bad shots. And I think that’s really important for you to understand because we’re going to come to this key word, expectation. It lowers your expectation. It gets you realizing, yeah, they do hit bad shots. They’re not perfect all the time. So, I think that’s really important to understand as you’re playing. Don’t fall into that trap that when you don’t execute the shot perfectly, what’s happening then? Mentally, you’re beating yourself up. If you look at it, the winners are generally half the distance from the hole compared to the average. And that’s the same for you. If you think about it, if you have a really good day, let’s say you are a single figure golfer and you suddenly instead of shooting 9 10 over, let’s say, you start shooting nearer to five, you’ve probably put that 100 yard shot closer to 15 20 feet from the hole. And that’s why you’re getting the results that you want. Okay? But on average, it works out near a 40t. Some days you’ll be 50 feet away and realize that’s okay. That’s not the end of the world. That’s really, really important. So, I’d encourage you to watch some of my videos, my 12 shots of golf. It goes through all these different levels and it shows you the average distance you need to be. And if you can do that every time, and remember, you can do some better, some worse, you’ll play to that level of handicap. And it’s called the 12 shots of golf because it covers everything from putting all the way through to your driving, bunker shots, 100 yard shots, 150 yard shots, coming out of the rough. It talks about every possibility that you could get in a round of golf. And if you understand that, it probably covers about 85% of the game. But remember what we said right at the start, get that expectation level low. Don’t think like the the tour player coverage that you watch every week, you’ve got to play perfect shots because if you do, you’re putting unnecessary pressure on yourself, which the chances are then you’re not going to have the best day on the golf course. I hope this will help you to take the pressure off your game, lower those expectations. And if it does and you’ve enjoyed the video, please subscribe to my channel. Press that little bell for notifications. Every Tuesday and Friday, my videos go out covering lots of different areas. But the main thing is to change your mindset about how to play golf. It’s not this perfect game, this perfect swing. It’s understanding what you need to do by getting that ball relative to the hole for your level. And the improvement I’m seeing in my golfers by changing this mindset is amazing. If you have enjoyed it, as I said, share it with your friends and I look forward to seeing you soon. [Music]

i so appreciate your viewpoints…it’s all about expectations, and you have helped me come to terms with my expectations…
David, I'm with you on this…I never watch golf on TV, where every putt less than 80 feet goes in the hole. I save lots of time, too, which means more time for practicing.
You are right david been watch many live events in Australia.
Best to Sit behind a par 3 hole all day on day 1 and 2 and watch the whole fieldhow many mis green, how many knock stck out and how many putts get missed.
And count how many 2s against bogeys and DB. Last event on a short hole 130m there was more 5s than 2s
That is reality.
Congratulations on reaching 14K subscribers and making all these helpful videos !
Very good insight, David. I have dropped from a 19-20 HCP to my current 15 HCP over the last year and a half, and I credit a lot of my progress to the advice and instructional information on your channel. Of course I’ve had a few personal lessons, and spend a lot of time on the golf course practicing, but I always take a thought from each of your videos. Thanks for your help and advice!
congrats on 150 episodes!!
Great information! I absolutely agree one of the worst things for an amateur golfer is to watch tournament golf on TV. It implants unrealistic expectations in the minds of the average golfer. This held me back tremendously until I read the book –
The Green book of breaking 80.” He also breaks down realistic expectations.
Another video full of common sense David. When I play I take 1 or 2 over par per hole as a good result and under 50 for 9 as a massive result. It's all about consistency for me and you are teaching me that…Well doe David!
